4/23/14 - if anyone wants to get into Bully speedrunning or has any new strategies for speedrunning either versions of the game, please post here. I'm pretty deft in Bully running and will help any newcomers gladly. I would always love to see more runners of this game and will help as much as I can to make that happen
Old post from November 2013:
Hi everyone, I'm brand new to posting here but I have been reading threads in here since April. I love speedrunning, it's my favorite hobby and has been since the beginning of this year when I discovered it. But anyways, I have done some speedrunning myself, unrecorded, of Bully Scholarship Edition, among a few other Rockstar games. I'm saying this because I believe that I am able to beat the currently posted record of this game on SDA by David Arnold and prove it later on when I have a better computer and recording gear. I have watched his run numerous times and have decided on some slight route switches which are able to save a few minutes. Also I can do it cleaner than the posted run, like not getting grabbed by a prefect in "That Bitch". One of my route switches that helps is in the first chapter. After "A Little Help" you have two missions available - That Bitch and Defend Bucky. The posted run goes to That Bitch first, but I have decided to go to Defend Bucky first even though it is a VERY SLIGHTLY longer run to it because as a reward you get the skateboard for faster transportation along That Bitch's long run. Plus you can punch Beatrice as soon as you pass it to teleport to the school where the next mission "The Candidate" is. Oh, and I found a few very small time saving glitches. I know I can't prove any of this now but I promise to bring proof within the next few months. I run it on the Xbox 360 now but the PC version has much faster boxing matches and tagging glitches so it's a must for the world record. It uses in game timer. I was going to make a segmented one to beat it then go for a nice single segment.

So does anyone maybe have something they want to throw in? I was thinking of going for 100% run to, but that would be in the distant future, with lots of planning needed. I say it now cause maybe people could help me plan a route. This game is really nice for speedrunning and is honestly slept on real bad. Rockstar is my favorite company and this is probably my favorite game of theirs to be honest, which sounds crazy haha. Oh and what do you guys think would be the best pc software to record this with? Xsplit or fraps or what? Something easy preferably as I am not very good with computer tech stuff. I'm going to go to classes for it though sometime. And BTW I posted this thread so early because I know this forum is sadly kind of slow in certain parts and I didn't think this would get much notice. I didn't want to do my run when I finally am able to and not have anyone know you know? Thanks for reading this thread guys!
Thread title:
First of all, I attempted to also run this game, it was not segmented though. I had trouble in Ch.3 when you are vsing the greasers because I had to wait a long time for a mission to spawn, I can't quite remember. Also, just remember that the pc port is VERY unreliable, I have always used the PC port and it has crashed on me all besides one run I have done. The specific points were random, I just safety saved everywhere though. I got a 4:19:57 and it is very unoptimized for any% single segment, I would be more then happy to help you route it if you'd like. I don't think an 100% run would be very fun but you could go for it. But all I gotta put in is that you might want to think twice before doing the PC port, it's the reason why I dropped this game because it's very unreliable
For me luckily when I played it on PC on my grandmas computer it was reliable and smooth with quick loads much unlike the Xbox edition. The Xbox loads so slow every time you go in and out of places or start a mission or trigger a cutscene. For chapter three there are christmas missions which are the only ones available to progress the story nad they start at times you must wait for. The best route is to attend both classes first, although i have been looking into doing balls of snow in between classes, if you can beat it quick enough you could theoretically be back before the second class. I feel that's too difficult though. Thanks for your offer to help route. I will post things here I am thinking about so you can see. As of now I can't think of how to get it any faster for mission order. I need to do a playthrough and analyze carefully. But strats for missions could probably get tweaked up a bit maybe even with glitches. But as of now I think it's as fast as it can get. I don't think I will really end up doing the 100%, but I might someday cause I really love Bully haha. And I did a single segment and got 3 hours 14 minutes. Your inputs always welcome ciyon! thanks

I can't remember if it's used in the published run but I once found a little trick in the Fight against Edgar in the abandoned chemical plant.
My memory of the trick itself is also a little fuzzy but I remember it making you ridiculously overpowered in the fight.

This was before I knew how to fight Edgar, so I think I just ran into him trying to attack, resulting in my attack being timed with one of his hits by the pipe in a way that I lost health, but didn't fall... which I could use to punch him into dropping his pipe, then I could pick it up and use on him, and also carry it with me to the next section where I somehow managed to make him drop his pipe pretty quickly (and then I could just smack him around until I won).

Sadly I don't remember better and don't have the ability to check it since I don't know where my game disc is. But hopefully you can figure it out and maybe make use of it. Good luck!
So you made Edgar not have a pipe for both parts of the fight? That's so cool, The posted run doesn't have this and I never have done it myself. I do have trouble on that fight sometimes and being able to consistently make Edgar drop his pipe would help out my runs drastically. Thank you for telling me this Warepire, I never thought of the possibility of that but since it is there, i'm going to work on trying to recreate it and find out how to consistently do it. Oh and what version did you play? Xbox, PC or Wii?
Yeah I was just so confused when I had to wait a really long time for the winter missions to start, making it annoying and wasting a lot of time, I didn't do the classes because I figured if it was in a timeframe it would end up going over the mission and I would be left confused. My run was pretty damn bad but I didn't think it could go down another hour, it makes sense though because I didn't know the complete route. Also, if you are still going to do the PC port i'd recommend using a gamepad, using the bicycle controls are god awful on keyboard. I couldn't really find any glitches when looking over the game really - I just found minor route changes like using the skateboard to go down instead of crossing pipes in edgar's place.

PS2 (pre-Scholarship Edition), but the fighting mechanics seem unchanged as far as I can tell from playing the PC version. I had the thing of hitting someone as they hit me and taking damage but not falling happen to me on PC, but not specifically in the Edgar fight. Technically it should still work. The main trick was to not "aim" at him but still attack in his direction.
Yea thankfully anyone who runs the game has to wait for the missions so everyone has the same disadvantage. I forgot to mention I play the PC version with an Xbox controller plugged into my computer. And I learned the skateboard jump like you said from watching the run on SDA. The first time I ran the game I chose it without ever watching a run, I was just like hmmm what game do I like and would like to speedrun? and I chose Bully. I did it in 5 hours 2 minutes!!!! I did 2 extras missions and had fails to. Oh well, I do good runs now and can't wait to do the PC version cause the boxing matches add the most time over anything cause I suck at them. You just gotta run it some more and learn how to do it smoothly that way. Learn which missions to avoid and such.
Yeah Warepipe I don't think the mechanics for fighting have changed from game editions. I think if I practice the time for it enough I would be able to do it swiftly and quick. Do you still have Jimmy face him when you don't aim? or do you just not aim and go at him.

Facing him surely, just not attacking him using targeting.
So I'm back again with more Bully stuff. So I've been running it lately, the first two chapters specifically, and have found a new lil glitch to help out. And a route change I've been using but I've  never posted til now. I was able to beat the first two chapters in 59 minutes on Xbox which is insane without the boxing glitch on PC. I know I could get Sub 57 maybe even 56 or better on PC. So happy!:)

So the new glitch is in Defend Bucky. There's a part after you fight two bullies where you run around to the other side of a gate and two bullies will come lunging at you. Well you can just stay on the other site and hop on the garbage bin and headshot the two before there even triggered. They stay red on the map but I've tested it and it's faster ver slightly and works.

The route change I use is in chapter two. After you do Movie Tickets and The Eggs there should be a waiting period of about 70 or so seconds, if you do it fast enough, which is easily consistent after some practice. This is plenty time to stop at the carnival and earn ten tickets real quick which is used for the next mission Carnival Date. With the tickets all you do is go to the carnival and buy Pinky the bear to pass Carnival Date. This utilizes some otherwise wasted time, so this is a definite time saver! Smiley
So what's up guys? Anyone thinking of trying Bully like me? I promise I will be streaming very often on Twitch on my channel AdamSpeedruns and there will be many Bully speedruns on the PC. First I want to work on making a segmented run to beat the posted record here of 2 hours 49 minutes, then i'm going to start working on single segment runs. I planned on using Open Broadcast Software, that's okay right? Can I use my Twitch video as proof for my segmented run when I beat the record? I was going to highlight the segments I want to keep into seperate videos and maybe try and upload them to youtube. Cause I will have failed segments in my past broadcasts to. Also I only do 7 segments total when it is easy to save and so i don't have to keep doing Christmas missions since there is waiting period anyways after getting firecrackers.

SDA does not track world records per se, most runs here were probably records when they were submitted though. We do not go around other websites and download their videos to put it up here, we need the runners to submit their videos to us, which will then go through a verification process. If no run is submitted, it's not verified, and cannot get published if it would pass verification.

There is also some quality requirements on your video if you want to submit your final version of the run, I suggest you record a clip of yourself playing using OBS (for example), and then posting the resulting video file as a source quality test in the tech support forum, then someone qualified will tell you if it's ok or not, if it isn't you will also receive help on how to get it up to par.

There is of course no requirement that you submit your run to SDA, there are many speedruns on Twitch, youtube, nicovideo etc that do not get submitted here for various reasons, and we do not think less of those players for that.

I'm looking forward to seeing some highlights from your attempt sessions! (My connection is too weak to tune in to a live broadcast and get anything out of it)

I'm glad you are excited for some Bully runs Ware. I've felt like no one really cares to watch a Bully run. I think I'm just going to keep my run on Twitch then. I still plan on breaking the posted segmented record, and I nearly have on Xbox, so I know on PC it is very possible with the additional timesavers in the PC version. I'll just leave it on Twitch once I put it all together into one video though. Or multiple highlights. I'm going to do the best I can do. I'm very serious about this game. Once I get a near perfect segmented run I'm going to starting running single segments, and work on those as it'll be easier/more fun to beat my PB's for that. Ill try and get the single segment about as close to segmented as it can be without the luck manipulation found in segmented runs.

I've decided to start routing for 100% to. This is really fun for me and I know that 100% is a big feat, but I know it's possible to get sub 6 hours 15 minutes maybe even sub 6. Also I was going to start running The Warriors, another game by Rockstar. Does anyone care to even see runs of that though? Anyways, I'm going to keep it posted on here, and I will be letting you know when I start streaming Bully. I plan on streaming starting in very early January.  Trust me I check this thread as often as I can. Thanks again Ware for even replying!
I'm back again with some new Bully strategies guys. I've been working on a nice run on Xbox even though WR is impossible on this version I've just wanted to see what I can do/practice. I found a faster way to destroy the porta potties in the last chapter in the mission "Revenge on Mr Burton". And a slight route change saving some more time to.

The way I destroy the porta potties is with the bike. In the run posted on SDA, the runner snipes the porta potties with the slingshot. This seems like it would be faster, but to destroy the potties you have to charge the slingshot the whole way before releasing. What I do is drive on my bike as fast as I can towards the porta potty and when i'm close I hold the break button and whip around so the back end of my bike slams into the potty, destroying it in the process. Doing this I am able to quickly speed right back up into the next potty, and repeat. With this method all I have to do is run into every potty nonstop and go straight back to Zoe. This is noticeably faster than sniping with the slingshot, especially once you have it mastered. Thankfully it's not very hard at all.

The route change I made is very slight, but it will make a difference. In the run on SDA after "Preppies Vandalized" in the final chapter the runner rides to an out of the way bus stop to get back to the school. What I do is go around a corner towards the school where a bike is, which is right out front of the preppies gym where you come out of after "Preppies Vandalized". Here there is always a racer bike spawn, it is equally fast as the aquaberry cruiser. I then use the bike to ride the very short distance back to the school and I park it out front of the boys dorm where I will be using it for the next mission "Busting In". Now this I tested out, and have found what I do to be faster, according to in game time. In game time is what is used for this game anyways. Well, that's about it. Hopefully whoever reads this has fun expanding their Bully speedrun knowledge. Like I said I will start streaming speedruns of this game on Twitch in early January. I plan on first claiming the segmented WR, then working on getting a really nice single segment run. Oh and this isn't as relevant but also I was going to do The Warriors speedruns! This is another great game by Rockstar. But anyways....Bully hype?
Did another single segment run, final in game time - 2 hours 58 minutes before the credits, which adds 8 minutes. To beat the time for the run here you have to beat the game in 2:40. It's possible but difficult and need some really good near perfect segments. I know with the route adjustments and new strats I can do this. Just waiting until I get a laptop now so I can show you guys. I love running this game and I couldn't tell you why. And I also have been working on the 100% route. It's still got A LOT to go. But I make it up as I play and think of things. I'll start posting plans for it someday, there is tons to cover for 100%. I think it would be possible for sub 6 hours for 100%. I just gotta make the route that that goal would be possible with.

I'm like the only person who posts in this thread. Sadly Bully speed runs get no love Sad
I really like this game (got 100 % on it) and would like to see a really well done run for it. Good luck!

Sadly Bully isn't a very ran game compared to GTA.
I went looking for some highlights from you the other day, but I saw that you made none, as I said before my connection is too weak to tune in to a live broadcast.
If you highlight your attempts (or some of them) after streaming sessions, then I can watch some of it and give you feedback etc.

YAY some people replied! Smiley Well sadly I haven't been able to stream any of my runs because I still need a laptop. In earlier posts I was saying how I planned on getting one in early January and that I would begin streaming then. As of now I am just doing runs on the Xbox 360, and it could just be considered as practice runs basically because I use the Xbox controller to control the PC version. Also it's not like I could get a really good time on Xbox as the boxing takes much much longer and other glitches + loading times. I have the PC version already, I simply need a good laptop to play it on. Once I have that I will be starting to make the most perfect segmented run possible, and I will be doing it all live for you to watch. After of course, I know about your slow connection. Do you happen to know if i'm just a basic non turbo or partner of Twitch will it archive my videos into the Past Broadcasts tab? I checked a box in my settings to have it archive my videos. Oh and one last thing, the only time I don't use the Xbox controller for the PC runs is during boxing where the glitch is using the left mouse button to punch. I'm glad you guys are interested and I can't wait to stream for you guys! Smiley
I've been reading the topic and the time saver strats you are using are great. I think all the improvements to the any% run have been mentioned but if any were missed I'll be sure to post.
I'll enjoy watching your progress. Good luck on smashing my time.

Wow it's really you. The original Bully master as me and my cousin like to call you haha. I'm glad you think the strats I've made up are good, I have gotten most of the strats I use from you. Runs are coming January. I don't think I'll be smashing your time but I do want to push this game to the limit. As fast as it can be done is as fast as I want it to be done. And honestly I think it's just around 5 minutes faster than the time you got, if that. Your run is near perfect, and shaving minutes off of it is definitely not an easy feat. But hey I'm really dedicated, I really want to see it happen. I love playing this game and running it and can't wait to see it completely solved and ran perfectly. I also planned on running the original Bully, as I'm getting a PS4 and it is on the PS store. And PS4 has live streaming straight to Twitch. So expect runs from that to. Glad you guys care about this great game, I can't wait to run it for you guys.
Hey guys I'm back again and I got some really cool new things! So I've just been playing around and doing practice runs like always and have found a few new tricks. And along with that I have thought of a new category I want to run that is more than any% but not a whole 100%. All Missions! Yep, Bully: SE All Missions%. I describe this category as doing all the yellow and red star missions in the game. So the main story, all side missions, and all clique challenges. It's going to be a lot of fun to work the side missions into the route and make up new strategies for missions. And I plan on running the original Bully (pre Scholarship Edition) on my Playstation 4 live to Twitch once I get one as that game is in the PS Store! Oh, and as for my 100% plans, I have decided to not write the route for Scholarship Edition, but rather the original PS verison of Bully as it will be a much less daunting and tiresome task. This is because of Scholarship Edition including 4 extra classes. This adds many extra days just to complete those. I look forward to working on All Missions% route first, then write up the 100% route. Although I practically am always working on the 100% route while I practice and play and note all the stuff in my head.

So the new little trick I found is in Busting In Part II. There is a part where after you hit a switch in a small building to open these gates you have to ride down a few ramps and then head over to a locked door so Jimmy supposedly notices it is locked and the mission marker will switch over the the trains. You can simply go straight from that small building with the switch to the train switch. This makes it so you don't have to backtrack from that locked door and waste ~10-15 seconds just for the mission marker to change. And my other new strategy is going to be in the All Missons route. It works for the Townies and the Greasers Challenge. These challenges are both just fighting groups of each clique inside their hangout, and it can be made a lot easier and faster with this tip. So as soon as you start hop right on the bed that is inside whichever hang out you're at and standing on the pillow part will usually be the best. But once you get there they will barely be able to touch you and you can easily snipe all their heads with the slingshot and finish these two challenges really quickly and easily! Smiley So yep, that's what up with me lately, looking forward to live streaming pretty soon. May be early! Can't wait to show you guys my runs/strats!

A thing to know about the original Bully game (that was partially fixed in SE) is that in bike races, you can bring your own bike (just get off it, and enter the marker soon enough). I think I also saw somewhere a guy using the go-cart or a moped as a bike, and the game accepting it.

Thanks Warepire. Yea I knew about this on accident because I entered a race right by my bike one time. I actually use this trick for the missions Race the Vale (kinda like this) and for Lola's Race I just start it with the racer bike right by Jimmy. As for go carts and mopeds though, this trick will work with the moped the same way as parking the bike by the mission marker. But it will not work with the go cart. What you can do though is park the go cart a little ways ahead of where the race starts, exit off the bike you start the race with, then enter it and proceed to use it in the race. I guess the game registers it as a bike. Pretty helpful trick actually, and it speeds up racing missions greatly. It will definitely be used more in 100% though as I think what i'm going to do is use bikes for races since once you travel 100km on a bike it gives you a percentage increase. Of course I'm going to use the fastest bike I have though. Your input is appreciated Warepire, and i'm really glad you're interested in Bully speed runs and come back to this thread to post. I check back daily and try to post decently often but I don't want to spam it.

Oh, I just remembered a trick, it may be 100% only, and maybe only for segmented runs as it's fairly hard to do, I did it on accident once (and it's the only time I did it):
If you have access to the "final level" BMX, you can break the mission Stronghold Assault. It can let you do the following:
1. It lets you jump over the fences into the area leading to the observatory, no need to fight Thad for the keycode. (I think it even allows you to skip talking to Fatty)
2. You can safely ignore everything en-route to the Observatory, you're traveling fast enough for nothing to be a threat.
3. (This is the part I only did once), it allowed me to get to the potato gun so fast I wasn't very disturbed by the nerds when breaking down the doors.
