Hi everyone.

I've meant to create this topic a bit sooner but was a bit busy lately.

I've grouped with 3 other people (and the only ones that I know of as of today) that run this game and decided to try and get as many people in, so here we are !

Bravely Default - Where The Fairy Flies is the Occidental equivalent of Bravely Default - For The Sequel (in Japan), it is the latest Square-Enix RPG and it is very enjoyable to speedrun.

Difficulty selection, turn off battles and/or decrease/increase their rate, skip all texts/dialogs/cutscenes + an awesome job system.

Its only flaw is to be on the 3DS, a very difficulty system to stream.

I'm currently the only runner with a capture board, I run Black Mages% on easy.

My PB is viewable here

Also check the tutorial on how to run the game here.

I know the game only comes out in 3 days in the U.S.A but if you have any questions regarding the runs and categories, I'll be more than happy to answer your questions !

Until then, bye bye =)
Thread title:
Hello
Hello,
I just finished this game on my first time around and was thinking it is a great game to speed run. (so here I am)
The game is super fun and I wanted to see if people speed run this, but I can see not many do.

What categories are there, what ending do you finish with?
Sorry but I can't think of any other questions right now, I'm sure if I think of any I'll be sure to ask Cheesy
Hey !
Any% is the fastest ending, not going to spoil for the other members reading here but you know which one is the fastest.
There is the any% category that involves Monks, with secondary jobs as Salve-Maker and Merchant (depending on the bosses), but I also run the game using only Black Mages. The time are very close to each other.

You can choose between easy and normal difficulty as well for more categories.
Feel free to ask more questions !
Gets the cake.
I'm still not very far through the game (somewhere around the middle of ch3), but at this point I can't fathom a hard-mode speedrun. I'm getting dominated with heavy grinding. However, if it could be done quickly and with minimal grinding I think it would be extremely entertaining.

Looking forward to helping with speedrun efforts, but after 25 hours I'm still at ch3 xD
As I said, routing is already kinda underway for hard, and it does involve grinding, but of course it's kept to the minimum. It's up to chapter 2 as far as I remember.
I updated my first post, I just got a new PB and it now includes commentary Smiley
Hey Romi, I enjoyed watching your run after I finally beat the game, haha.  Now that the major legwork of FF1 routing is out of the way, this is one of the games I'm interested in picking up.  I'm looking for info but haven't found a whole lot, likely due to the limited nature of streaming from a 3DS.  So far I've found your Black Mage% Easy run, and one Any% run with Monks on nicovideo that clocks in at 5:27:59.  Even with timing differences that seems really slow compared to yours.  I'd like to learn the Any% route.  What resources are available out there for prior work?  Any specific sites/forums/documents you learn from?

Thanks.  And congrats on your new PB today!

Hi ! The Any% on NicoNico is from Bravely Default : Flying Fairy, the very first game  where you couldn't turn encounters off so obviously it takes a lot more time to finish.
I have notes from a japanese runner for Any% on Bravely Default - Where the Fairy Flies / For The Sequel, they are a bit outdated but they follow the exact same route as the video that you saw + a couple of tweaks.
This runner's PB is 4:39 on normal and 3:23 on easy (they don't usually run on easy though, it was just for me to compare with Black Mages%)

I can ask him any time if I'd like his updated notes, I have a skype conference with all current runners of this game.

I don't know/think there is any website, otherwise the japanese bros on skype would have linked it to me.

So the best you could do is add me on skype if you're interested and we'll provide you everything there.
Sounds good!  My skype account is "duncan.mcfarland".  Sadly I can't stay in Skype groups long.  I use Skype for work as well and I can't risk message notifications if I'm hosting an online meeting.  I'll hang around as long as I can though.
Update : I have created a YouTube playlist where I upload my VOD of the on-going tutorial on how to speedrun the game !

You can find it here.

Enjoy !
Hello!  I've made my way here from the A(/S)GDQ  videos on YouTube.  I recently finished this game and ran a first go with a [NG+ true end, normal] on 4:40:57.  I wouldn't consider it much, but I'm not completely interested in Any%s, hence why I ran it.

I'm thinking about doing quickest easy/normal/hard true ends, and I might separate NG+ from fresh starts.  But for now, I'll be trying my hand at NG+ pathing, since this will be my first not-so-casual speed run game.  I know true end has that repeating crystals, but those take about 1:30 with my haphazard run.  I don't find it particularly terrible.

I'll also figure out someway to stream using a camera with maybe a weekend run until I manage the funds to get a 3DS that's output modded for easier streaming.
Yeah NG+ true end is really fast, 4:40 seems a bit too much for me though. What are your strats ?
In casually playing this, I found a glitch today that could potentially be useful to a speed run, but given that I don't know the plot past the point I'm at, I have no idea how useful it'd be. I'll try to explain as spoiler-free as possible!

I'm at the point where the party is separated. My current party only has 2 members in it, one of whom is a Ninja. Prior to the party separation, I had the Ninja skill Kairai as my ninja's last action, targeted onto the party member in slot 3. Fast forward to where I am now with my two party members. The next random encounter I get into with the 2 member party, I have auto-battle on, which means I haven't touched my ninja's inputs since before the separation. The ninja in my party uses Kairai on the enemies...and they proceed to target and hit themselves!

I'm assuming this is happening because Kairai was set to be used on the party member in the third slot which is currently empty, and therefore it defaults (hah) to the next available target, which is the monster itself. It's not character based; the character who was previously occupying slot 3 before the party separated is now occupying slot 1.

Again I haven't watched a speed run (nor have any idea what happens past the point I'm at in the game) so I dunno if it's useful at all, but just thought I'd share. It's possible that it could be extrapolated into different situations.
Na that's not a glitch, it's gameplay intended ! Whenever your target is not available, it redirects to the next "most valid" target.
I'm about to finish my first playthough and I'm super interested in speed running it as well! I like your twitch setup as well since its almost a grand to get a 3ds with a capture card ><. Anyways my main question is for the any% run online features of the game aren't allowed right?
check your pantry
Playing through this and loving the game, I'm glad the routing is already underway. As soon as I saw that the game had a fast-forwarding battle feature, I knew this game would be great for running.

What abilities are necessary for the any% monk route? Or are monks just THAT op?
@Scilencer yes, you can't use any online feature.

@Stealinbread basically Hidden Dragon and their last offensive skill + Salve-Maker skills
Fire Emblem?
I've watched a bit of your speedrun you linked in the first post, and also a little of your most recent stream, and I have a few questions:

1) Why do you brave using the menu button, not by using L? I'd have expected L to be quicker, especially as you can move down to the menu item you want to select at the same time you press the button.

2) Why do you give Ringabel Rod Lore? All Rod Lore does is increase physical damage, and from what I saw (up to the Dragon) he never makes a physical attack. Maybe he does make some later, I dunno, but I doubt it, since his damage would be terrible.

I should mention I only recently beat the game for the first time, so my knowledge may be slightly lacking in some areas, but these two things stuck out to me as odd.
@I_eat_tables :

Using L is only faster when you want to brave only once, else since you can use both A and D-pad to confirm, going full brave thanks to menu save about 0.5 to 1 sec each time.

And for Rod Lore, I just checked, it's cuz we are idiots and didn't notice that it does not affect stats others than Physical damage (I'll tell romi about it, thanks for noticing)
Fire Emblem?
Thanks for the response - I've actually talked to Romi in stream about it, he actually knows about Rod Lore already but it's habit to put it on currently. And yeah, I can see now that Brave button is faster.
Just to keep this from losing momentum, I want to report in that I've completed my first any% run on easy, using the Monk route.  I ran it just after finishing translating the Japanese notes you(Romi) sent me.  Clocked in at 5:20:02 game time.  Faster menuing and battle execution will definitely shave off a good chunk of time.  I've optimized a few of the boss fights for easy mode but still need to optimize plenty more.  Will also try to figure out what shortcuts I can take in the route since I'm on Easy and the notes are for Normal.  I'll report back later once I have a few more runs under my belt.

In the mean time I wanted to ask you a question, Romi.  Your friend who got the 4:39 Normal and 3:23 Easy, did he mention significant route changes for Easy?  I don't see a 1hr 15min difference from Normal to Easy while keeping the same route.  I could be completely wrong, though, just wanted to make sure.  Thanks.
He didn't tell me anything no, just the time.

On a sidenote, my tutorial with new route is now complete.

You'll find the playlist here ! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpPxEnORfg4dgwGFQ2wBEedUMPbUFXkpH
New PB/WR 3:16:12
Finally got sub 3:20 and only one reset, good stuff.
Grats on the WR Romi.
I ran a 3:46:29 Today.
still Learning and I can do things a lot better.
But I was pretty chuffed that i did that on my 10th Attempt.
Dropping in again to say I'm still working on that Monk route.  I cut out the Ninja and a lot of item pickups and dropped my previous time by 1hr 12min down to 4:08:01 in-game time.  I may be able to cut more time (route-wise) if I look for more efficient grinding spots.  I feel like I lose quite a bit of time because of it.  I want to post these notes but not until I'm comfortable with them.  Still have some work to do.  Will update later!
