Can't believe I let this slip by for 2 weeks...

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/intensitypro4k

Made a blog post about it but I'll post it here also: http://www.thethrillness.com/2015/03/blackmagic-intensity-pro-4k-1080p60-and.html

Announced mid February 2015, the new Blackmagic 4K now arrives and has probably taken the throne of the best gaming capture card.

It supports 1080p60 RGB capture and up to 2160p30 at 4:2:2. One of my main problems with the old Intensity Pro was that 480p was not supported over Component, this is now fixed.

People will be comparing this to the Micomsoft SC-512 so we can do a quick pros and cons list.

Intensity Pro 4K

Supports Deep Color output. Due to this, no other capture card can rival the quality outputted by this device. In a real world scenario though, I'm unsure of whether this will actually be beneficial as most stuff will just end up on YouTube.

It's $200 (or £135 according to the site). That's absolutely insane value.

Has passthrough. I'm unsure of whether it will function like the old Intensity and the tech specs don't mention it doing 4:4:4 to 4:2:2 processing. It looks like it might be lagless.

Supports 7.1 audio capture. This is always absent on cards of this price.

If it's like the old Intensity, it won't capture Full range content. I'll need to have the driver and the actual hardware to know for sure. I'm guessing since it supports Deep Color, they did support it.

The drivers can be flaky but obviously this can improve with time.

Obviously no 240p support but that's easily worked around with a GV-USB2 or similar.

Micomsoft SC-512

The Blackmagic crushes it in price and availability.

We know for sure the passthrough is lagless but so might this new Blackmagic.

Ability to capture via VGA so retro console RGB capture is possible. Anyone really into retro gaming has an upscaler so doesn't really matter.

Drivers are currently way better than Blackmagic.

Summary

What's now known as the best capture card completely depends on what you personally need. Both products are great but right now I have to side with the Intensity. That price point and features is bordering on absolute insanity.

I wonder if there's a way to force 240p by modding the drivers, seems like kinda a setback to use a GV_USB2 when comparing it against the blackmagic beast

I'm curious to know if anything besides the AverMedia Live Gamer Portable supports 240p component. Mostly for curiosity reasons, cause that really is the only thing I've seen so far.
HELLO!
How does a GV-USB2 work around no 240p?

no the GV-USB2 would be FOR 240p, the blackmagic doesnt have 2040p
the Gv-USB2 is a work around because of its 250p recording
HELLO!
It's only composite and S-Video though?  So it's not really a replacement.
thethrillness.blogspot.com
Well anybody that invested in having 240p support (in this instance SCART RGB via VGA) will already have the Mini so you just capture over HDMI with the Intensity.

The GV-USB2 is thrown in to cover composite and s-video for people who just want to have everything supported.

That card looks super interesting, 1080p, 60fps, 4:4:4 RGB sampling and 7.1 audio. That's everything I've wanted in a capture card. I wonder how it handles non-standard refresh rates and full vs limited range video. Too bad I can't justify spending 240€ 197€ on a device that I have 0 use for right now. Sad
this card does seem more like a industrial thing, I mean its only a few $$$ away from something like the LGP and say you upload clips to youtube it will be crapppy quality anyway, so it might not be the best capture Card for speedruning/gaming unless you have a lot of money off hand (or unless it has a huge price cut for a christmas or something)

Was doing more searching and came across a not so useful feature for gamers but anyone looking to capture old VHS just struck the jackpot.

http://www.dvc.uk.com/acatalog/Black_Magic_Intensity_Pro.html: Built-in Timebase corrector - unheard of in a card at this price.  Increasingly we are getting people with capture problems using old VHS tapes and decks.  The solution is always to add a timebase corrector between your source and the capture card.  The Intensity Pro 4K has one built-in an in our tests was able to capture from a particularly "ropey" VHS tape using a very old VHS player which the original Intensity Pro and Intensity Shuttle could not do.

Bear in mind these broadcast grade TBC's are easily over $200.

I've spent the past few days looking at stuff and talking to other people with the cards. Some bad points:

1. The fan is reportedly at 50dB.
2. People can't even get video with it unless you use Media Express at 10 bit AVI RGB. It shouldn't be user error as the guy I talked with had other BM products and they were fine.

Probably wait a month or so to see if driver support improves.
I wonder if you could replace the fan with a different heatsink + bigger fan.

oh wow they forgot a space

So this is turning into trainwreck city for Blackmagic. 5 days ago I emailed Blackmagic some questions. Yes... 5 days ago. Today I got a reply.

"We aim to respond to all email queries within 1 working day"... I see.

Here are my original questions.

1. Does the passthrough operate the same way as the old Intensity Pro where it was converted to 4:2:2 on output and thus introduced some lag? Is it now 4:4:4 output and lag free? If so, what happened to Component to HDMI lag?

2. With other DirectShow software, are you able to select 4:2:2 HDYC for non UltraHD resolutions or is it always going to be RGB?

3. Will the new card support 0-255 Full range? The old Intensity only supported 16-235.

The reply:

thanks of your email,

1) I will ask the developer team whether the pass through is 10bit RGB or re negotiated
2)The UHD is always YUV
3)the card support 0-255

My impressions:

It's just as quick as they can reply it seems with 2 mistakes. "of your" instead of "for your" and "support" instead of "supports". Just looks really unprofessional.

Question 1 wasn't even answered and I bet you I don't get a follow up email to clarify. How did answer 2 help? The only answer I got was from 3 but they haven't explained how you would do this as there's no configuration to select this. I honestly may aswell not even have emailed. I'd stay away from Blackmagic.
HELLO!
That to me has always been the problem with Blackmagic. The hardware is compelling. The support for it, software and otherwise, reeks.

Which is why I built a whole new computer to switch from the BM Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt, to the Micomsoft SC 512 N1 L. Smiley

Thanks for attempting to run that down!
But even if there are problems with the Blackmagic card, it still means that there is now a prosumer device that can capture 1080p60 in 4:4:4 with surround sound and also support 2160p30. Though it still can't capture professional 4K (4096x2160). Other companies will now have to catch up and work on adding those features to their products. Btw, does Youtube allow 5.1/7.1 audio yet?
yes(?) http://puu.sh/gI6Ln/13b370225c.png it has support for 5.1, can verify though

It works wonderfully under OS X. Media Express, FCP, or Premiere. I was using Prores 422HQ.

If anybody is curious about the surround sound, it's LPCM over HDMI only. Channel order out of the XB1 and PS4 seems to be L,R,LFE,C,Ls,Rs for 5.1.
thethrillness.blogspot.com
Is that with Deep Color enabled in the console settings? Try capturing 4:4:4 and see if you can still get it working.

Yes, it works fine with deep color on. Prores 4444 really pushes the disks for 1080p60, but it captures okay.
