http://tasvideos.org/media/dosbox-rerecording-exe-a5.zip - Latest version

http://bisqwit.iki.fi/kala/sdl-dll.zip - Required DLL

Yes, people, Bisqwit has added movie support to DOSBox.  It won't be acceptable for this site, I don't think, since it has frame advance & re-records, but it could be a very useful tool for showing practice runs & ideas.

And who knows, maybe someone could create their own version without the TAS features - here's the source code.

Just a suggestion! =)

Existence as you know it is over
That thing is very difficult to work with, not to mention that movies made on one comp are almost always unplayable on other comps. Just a head's up.
100% runs=great to watch
So long as they eventually become avi's on TASvideos...I sense great, terrifying potential with this development.
It would be cool to see some of the old DOS games absolutely shredded and this sounds like a promising way for that to happen with a little development
To see the old classics being TAS'd... I've been waiting for that day to dawn for so long. 8| Just a little bit more... <<

Yup, I'm very interested in doing a couple of DOS TASes. TNSe mentioned they were thinking of doing UFO, which sounds like a goldmine to me.
DOSBox <3
OMG. This is awesomeness. A shitload of games came into my mind which I could TAS right away, I'll look into this when I have more free time.
There is no victory without combat
Yeah, i think i know what you mean Sanitars. Momentarily I think of all these Apogee Games from the 80s..omfg.
i like to watch.

what people do with their free time is totally their own business, but this nevertheless makes me die a little inside.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
*watches as this slowly turns into a TAS-bashing thread*

<<<<Has a long history of enjoying/loving/archiving TAS pieces...was speaking in EPIC terms.  Think Conan style.

Hell, think of the Conan games!

Isn't it possible to record a DOS game by using S-Video/Audio cables to a VCR? (I know next to nothing about DOS or recording for the most part)

It is my halfassed understanding that some stuff just doesn't work out...hence many folk hope that Dosbox to be allowed one day for instance.

Semi-related since most folk here don't seem to go there for some reason...but www.speedrun.net has somehow recently wrangled some way of managing TAS stuff with C64 games.

UFO as in X-COM: UFO Defence? Sweeeet.
I wouldn't mind seeing a TAS of Wing Commander, either.

It is, but there's some issues - the biggest probably being that you need a video card that will display stuff on the S-Video output while playing DOS games. How much of a pain this is depends on whether you're running it in DOS, or in win9x, or in winNT+VDMSound.
This development to DOSbox is noteworthy because it lets you record what are, in effect, demo files for any DOS program - much easier to record and much smaller, albeit not as portable.
This isn't immediately useful to us because emulators are verboten here, but as rashreflection pointed it, it has a lot of TAS potential and could be of use here for testing and demonstrations.

So if we keep it up, will you completely die eventually?  If so, great: there will be one less vocall troll on the forums.  Why did you even read this thread, much less respond to it.

On topic: any XCOM run will be joyous, but there are definitely a few other games I would prioritize.  Here's to hoping this evolves in to some bastardized Windows tool'd program.
I'm gay, seriously.

Who's "they"? I think nobody is planning to do UFO yet. If you know the game well, why not start doing it yourself? If you make even an average run that completes the game, it will gain attention. That's what I'm going to do with games I'd like to see done.

TNSe, like I said.
Yeah, I'm interested, but I don't know enough about the mechanics behind X-COM. I'll leave it to someone with more nous.

Sounds good, if they are serious about that. I wish them luck! And good luck to all who attempt recording runs with Dosbox!
Verified verifier and hangaround :)
I think theres an old topic of a guy who beats the game on either superhuman or 4/5 in about 6 hours.

Not sure though.
