Alright, not that I'm done with sonic 2 or anything, but I need another diversion to work on. My friend challenged me to run an rpg, so I picked an action rpg that I've played as a kid and was relatively short.

The best time I've found documented so far is 1:07:09. I'm trying to get into contact with the person who completed this run to bring him over here for discussion on fighting strats/ route strats.

In the next few weeks, I'll be posting routes and other discoveries here. Any tips you guys have as far as fighting/best combos goes would of course be appreciated. I'll also have to first figure out what is even necessary to beat the game, as its been a while  :P. I'm pretty sure none of the legendary items are worth getting, but obviously if they save enough time down the rode its always a possibility.

Sorry to double post already, but I've just got into contact with the guy who has done the 1:07 run. There is a huge wealth of knowledge out there about this game, with a ton of dedicated fans, so hopefully I will be able to sort through all of the new information and document it here (I think documenting at sda for runs is important, as any information for future runners kind of sucks when the runner keeps it all in there head, but i'll get off my pedestal now). Hopefully we have some interest among the people here at sda, as there has been a huge response at some of the other retro-gaming places I frequent about this game.

Quick little timesavers: Jumping up and down stairs and off cliffs. Saves about a half second each, respectively.
Obviously I want to avoid knocking enemies down, it slows things down considerably. Sometimes its the fastest thing to do though, if you don't have to kill the enemy you can knock him down and jump over him. Its pretty much necessary to have a 6 button controller due to the keypad shortcuts. Also, I'm still trying out battle techniques, but it seems like some of the bigger hitters are going to be useful mostly against groups of enemies. When you have one enemy, it seems more effective to just spam the dude with slashes/stabs/kicks (not sure which is fastest).

I really wish the damn sliding animation could be avoided somehow, but my attempts so far have been futile (running then stopping no matter what results in a small half second slide, which looks bad and is slow).
Hi, thank you for the invitation! Smiley

For a good speed run:

1. you have to know the game/map very well;
;)you have to know where you are going and what are looking for, prepare the items/weapons for that monster/boss/place ahead of time.
2. avoid/skip all monsters/places if possible;
;)you can knock down the monster by Jump Kick then run, or let the monster knock you down(monster doing a running charge to you, they will by pass you), then get up and run.
3. get all the helps you can get from the game.
;)Now, Efreet is one of spirit I don't use the most, but it is a most in a speed run, get the gems if the gems is on your way, but don't go to a place just to get one.

Basically I summarized them in above big 3 points. Here are some details which are just some tricks/technique. First thing will be practice until you get it right. Run is a standard for speed, pick up the items(get back mana/spirit health) for spirits since they use them more than Ali(keep 10 items space for them, 6 items for Ali, I was never able to fill up all 16 item slots though), use the light ball at spirit calls to call spirit and get extra item. Use hyperbom to call Efreet. Use Start button to switch weapon or use item, time is counted when using x, y, and z shortcut key, you can see it in Efreet running track(not sure other places), Mode + B is fine for fast switching weapon. For the hearts, yeah, if Ali gets 9 hearts, Rank 10, Ali's strength will be double, but I would say it's time consumming for 9 hearts in doing a speed run. You have to let the monster hit Ali down to 1/8 health, kill the monster, and it will drop a heart. Let Ali get back to full health by using items or go to place to charge up, then repeat letting the monster hit Ali down to 1/8 health, kill it to get another heart. Maximun I got was Rank 8, minimum was Rank 5, never able to get 9 to achieve Rank 10, so even you go through the whole game, can't even get 9, so it's very time consumming to get to Rank 10. Last thing, don't do any combo against any boss, use Sword slashes by press B and B(Ali will do a horizontal sword slash then vertical slash, just keep it up, that's enough, pressing the button too fast will become Kick, too slow then Ali will only do horizontal sword slashes, practice. ;-)

So, I'm surprised no one from sda has responded that they'd like to see this game run (uyama doesn't count, but i know he thinks the game is pretty fun, and Du wrote a walkthrough for a segment of the game, so he doesn't count either). The game was pretty popular, so I can't see why it wouldn't be good speedrun material. I still think the game is popular enough to warrant a speedrun, and really recommend it to gamers to try it out, as its usually compared to zelda but I find it more fast paced and action based.

Thanks for all the tips Du, they will help out a lot .

Actually, I tested the start button thing and it doesn't use up any time using the shortcuts either on the in-game clock (I sat there for 5 minutes on an emulator, saved, and the time was the same). So it neither saves time nor hurts it, thankfully, as the shortcuts are great.

And when I don't have a sword , I'm pretty sure kicks are the best way to get rid of enemies. You can rape them so much if you trap them in a corner and just hit them with kicks. Slashes definately are the best when I do have a sword (which will be against most bigger enemies/bosses).

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Shame there's no support for a speedrun of this game because I'd be willing to help out any way that I can.

EDIT: Sorry about bumping this from so many pages ago. This was the only relevant link I found while searching for Beyond Oasis speedruns.
100% runs=great to watch
Holy shit...how in the hell did I miss this topic despite checking all the forums at least once a day for months and months now?

DEFINITELY interested in seeing this game torn asunder.  Perhaps a mention in a Virtual Console topic would lure more folk...since I'm fairly sure the game became available on the service some months back giving many a new folk a shot to paly through the game.

GO FOR IT!  Then go mad with power and do the sequel (or was it a prequel?)
wise fwom yo gwave
Yea I abandoned this mainly because of lack of fan interest. I still don't think there is enough interest to have a run.
100% runs=great to watch
Sad

That's how it goes though.  All that means is other new projects will takes its place....which can't really be considered an overall loss.  Perhaps in the future the noition will stike ya or somebody else again.
That's a damn shame. I'm a big fan of the game and I think this is one of those games where a solid speed run could be really inventive. Sadly, the only version I own is the VC version.
That's a crying shame. This was a superb game (I think it was called "Story of Thor" outside the US. I would love to see a run. I have such fond memories of playing trough this as a kid. I hope you'll reconsider. Maybe change the tread title to include the European name. See if that re-ignites some interest Cheesy
Hi,
I made a 1h32m run as a first speed run attempt. I think I can do better, maybe 1:07 Smiley

Yeah, I didn't find any support on this game too, it's so sad because it's Sega answer to famous Zelda series, and these Zelda games are very hot for nerds. There is no topics, no videos, no community! I am currently exploring glitches, they are working on console version, too. Check them out, let's explore this wonderful engine

Very interesting jump glitch (in this video I have skipped Dytto and Efreet and fooling around)
Basically you can jump in crazy places if enemy push Ali away from particular place,
too bad you will stuck after Wind Fortress boss battle without the Spirit Ball

Walking through stuff glitch

This is really weird and I need some smart people to comment this,
like how is that works and how can it be used on other game screens
Rad... They have taken me...

OH YEAAAH At last I have found real humans that react to this! I want to share two other videos too, because they may contain some information for those who know the technical stuff, maybe this shows some game programming problems in this classic game! Come on, people, let's dig this GEM thumbsup I think this engine can be broken and the results will be VERY entertaining. Don't forget about the crazy stuff that can be found by TAS community with their powers!

How to stuck on the screen with 0 HP and locked exits
(the game thinks that you are dead and it locks all menu buttons, but still you can use weapons, ELIXIR etc)

Weird animation problems which can be somehow useful for breaking the game

Come on, let's rock it happy
Rad... They have taken me...
Funky stuff, I wonder if item buffering could be used to skip cutscenes somehow. Keep hammerin' away!
Leader of Starbirdia!
Those are some sweet glitches. I may have to pick this game up for an actually speedrun since it doesn't take that long to complete.

When you do the 0 HP warp glitch, is it possible to take damage and if so do you know what it does? Also, if you restore health at that point, does the game allow you to menu again?

in theory u can do 100lvl challenge and then u dont need ifrit at all, but this challenge is hella long.

BOMBS!! thumbsup
I have destroyed the Ice Cones with the bombs that I have picked up in the Forest Shrine (remember OOB glitch video), but the messy editing didnt showed that!
Sorry guys, but I thought that the community is not interested in this game, so the quality of the videos suck!
Hmm, but I think it is not taking much time to run into the forest in the beginning of the game,
enter the Forest Shrine, take these bombs (just a few rooms into the Shrine) and run back to the upper right corner of Dytto Shrine screen and destroy that Ice Cone...
But everything can be improved, because people can bring unexpected results from playing this game.

KEEP ON IT GUYS THIS GAME ENGINE IS AWESOME!!

Everything is in the video and description! Ali can't leave the screen, one hit damage brings the Game Over screen, but when you are walking around the game engine still knows about your inventory. You just can't enter any of the game menus - if you press START, X, Y, Z - then nothing will happen. And your mana points is empty and for some reason Ali just can't use the Spirit Ball to summon DYtto. The only method to restore your health is to pick up some hearts and they will give you a few health points but the menus still won't work. In case if you have precios ELIXIR: after Ali gets hit, the game will automatically use an ELIXIR and it will restore everything to the normal state - you can use the menus and the exits of the screen will be unlocked. Hurray! This is funny because Ali can fall on some cave entrance sprites (like on the floor), make his pathetic dying animation... but, when ELIXIR revives him, he will enter that location in milliseconds (I didn't count the frames).

It seems that I needed to work on the videos more, for example, use some 21st century video editing software,
hardsubbed them with all the INFO and add these pause-and-zoom moments that makes it all clear for everybody include fresh runners of the game.
But the internet was dead silent when I have searched for glitches of this game so I just put them out for blind guess. And something is going on, people!
I think there is a method to move through the locations of this game in the very WEIRD way, this game can be very entertaining for many people to watch.
There is some patterns which always triggers interesting errors in the game calculations, for example when Ali jumping from a cliff - by now, I see this as one of the heaviest flaws of the game.
BTW on some occasions when I have used the frame-by-frame input to make the character run, Ali was desintegrating into separate sprites of himself, what the hell is that means?

PS - Slightly off the topic, but check this video from ANOTHER GAME, Gargoyles for Genesis!
I wish that we something like this for BEYOND OASIS! This will BOOST the exploration process happy
IF THIS VIDEO VIOLATES THE RULES, NO PROBLEM I WILL REMOVE IT FROM THIS TOPIC

Nice!! I am already thinking of the experimental setup to try that anywhere in the game:

- You can acquire an Efreet Lamp to extract an Omega Sword from it with the Spirit Ball, that goes for full weapon slots.
Because otherwise you need to do stuff like catching or lurking an enemy which drops something for the Item slots.
And then you just constantly pressing the Attack Button while holding the D-pad in some direction, and Ali moves around in the stop-animation.

- The cutscenes are really weird in this game, but they give the feeling of a 16-bit era blockbuster. But what if the game will lock you on the screen if you have skipped them? The first cutscenes that came in my mind are "watch the Red Armlet before the fight with gargoyles on the ship", "Ali runs towards the Red Armlet in the the Wind Fortress", or "the guards are taking the Princess and walking away from you in the mountains".

then u can return to castle and find him stealing princess xD While saying get the cube, and after u got that cube u try to bring it to him but he is not there so he doesnt need it xD
i need to try to finish game with this cube in invetory mb something strange happens while i have this cube...

Edit: nothing happens. Just ordinary game ending... But it seems agito becomes a bit weaker actually.

Niice!! Very interesting aspect of this game - how is it knows where you are and what are you need to do at the moment!
I think there is some keys to the wonderful game skips hidden in these moments, because if OOB will work the way it needs to works for us,
player can just switch the screens or use shortcuts to trigger what he wants, like in many modern speedruns.
But you need to know how the screens are located in this game, because in many cases they are glued together.

SOME COOL MAPS HERE https://tcrf.net/Proto:Beyond_Oasis/Maps !!

The dungeons rooms can be very hard to skip, daaamn....

I was playing the game with the frame-by-frame input and these beasts were really annoying, it is like you move just one pixel
and instead of attacking they are doing something completely different and stupid. The special attacks that Ali can do with his dagger are just too slow for this,
but if you got the emulator with re-record ability it will look nice. I wil later upload a short GIF animation to show successful attempts,
but here is original video for anyone who is interested - the FIRST GARGOYLE FIGHT is on 10:16 !!

WHAT I WANT to say, you need a tutorial for everyone for the Gargoyles based on these re-record and frame-by-frame analysis!
I was very happy when I have watched all these fights with them in real speed afterwards Grin
BUT PLEASE don't ask me why Ali is always jumping in this video! Cheesy
Oh.. to be honest, I will ask any of your questions about this funky vid. It was pure joy doing this experiment back in the days.

interesting page about game screens btw!
psss u can kill snake in 1 cycle.

also dytto unsummon water drop has weight in this game, usable in room before ifrit boss
btw tryed to manipulate enemyes to push me while i jump, welp its close to impossible for me... i me
an i couldnt do it at all. Guess zombie half is best thing that can push you off

and one more thing, its imposible to get up if u glitch throw map, guess mountains are kinda layered somehow to prevent mountain climbing.

Someone please explain is this some memory problems in the game? Have you seen this in another sprite games and how this can be helpful?
I have spammed many healing sparkles on one screen and they started glitching and for some reason thay are taking sprites of another objects.

Not to mention the Spirit of Fire is got himself in a endless loop here, but as I have remembered he always was glitchy and badly programmed.
Thank you smart people!
