I haven't seen it anywhere else. The gamefaqs doesn't give any other location. But taking the picture takes virually no time, it's just that it's quite difficult to do it fast...

Then you have to do the opening battle very fast, which goes more often wrong than right due to random factors or just a minor mistake.

What random factors are there? It goes perfectly most of the time for me.

Quote:
Then you must take the pictures as fast as possible and run to Pey'j'.

The bug, humans, thing on the lawn, and Pey'j are all easy to get. You shouldn't get pics of anything else; they are all either quicker to get elsewhere, or are easier to get when you return later on with the zoom.

In the second segment there is one thing that goes wrong very often. It's taking a picture of the fish on the hovercraft in the hangar.

Get it when you return later. Actually, now that Agrajag mentions it, I seem to recall seeing it somewhere else too... at a guess, I'd say it's in the upper levels of the Factory. I'll keep an eye out for it next time I play.

Quote:
The reason I save at Mammago Garage is that you'll have to wait for your hovercraft to be finshed otherwise. Pey'j entering the hovercraft is also a pretty random factor.

And there's also the serpent that appears as soon as you leave. So that's a good place to save.

Never taking damage is very possible. However in some places it's faster to take damage. I'm not sure, but I'm leaning towards taking damage to save time.

Hmm? Where is it faster to take damage? I looked for spots where it might be, and couldn't find any.

I did another practice run... got 2:57. ^_^

One thing I'd like to know... have you ever gotten into the hovercraft when in Mammago's, only to have your characters jump right back out? It happened occasionally on the 'Cube version, but it's happening every time on the Xbox version. And it's really annoying. Anyone know how to avoid it?

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I've never had that happen, PS2 version.
2:57 sounds pretty good, although I have no idea how good it actually is. Did you avoid getting killed?

Jade sometimes hits faster, and sometimes a little slower. Of course it's a matter of timing, but still you have to be a little lucky. Especially when time slows down and you have to fight the 3 monsters, you want to avoid some tactics Jade has to defeat enemies.

The pictures aren't that hard, but the you'll want to take them as fast as possible, and clicking a fraction too early is pretty frustrating.

I already got the fish the first time I went through the hangar now, and it couldn't be done any faster, even if it was in another place, the only thing is that it might have saved me a segment, but for reading your mission you have to be right in front of the card reader anyway.

Taking damage is faster in the Alpha sections level, you enter when you walk right out of the Akuda Bar (triangle key door). You'll get to a long downward shaft, with lasers. If you go as fast as possible, the lasers will be there, and you'll have to wait. Landing on the lasers will give you a speedboost in the right direction and avoid the waiting. (I don't think you got the 3 pearls you can collect here, cause i'll take too long in a 71 pearl run I think)
Sleeping Terror
Well, it sounds like you know what you're doing. Good luck with the rest of your run.

That 2:57 did have a few deaths. But I think I've figured out exactly what I want to do for every room in the game, barring further insights. Now I just have to remember it all during a run. I think I'll start recording now, just in case I get lucky.

It's too bad no-damage isn't the fastest way after all. Like you thought, I don't go there on my run.
SSBM Fanatic
2:57 is very impressive. How do you manage the game you have to beat Francis in, I think it's "Palettes," I'm guessing you save right before you attempt to try it?

For me, that was the hardest part of the game, and still is.
Precursor
I didn't find that very hard, three tries (one with the lower bet) and his pearl was mine.

I'll be looking forward to the run... I just have to finish the game myself first. I'm trying to get to the Slaughterhouse. I've done the jump in the race, it's the area after I can't find my way out of.

If you're talking about the long straight collapsing bridge with the "Spider Robot," you just keep doing straight.

For the part after that, which seems more reasonable to get stuck in. There should be lots of green water and a cave with Red Glowing Mines in them.  Outside of the cave[With boxes and Anguilla Bifida you should photograph] there's a flying sentry bot with a spotlight underneath it. Travel under it's light and it'll drop a torpedo-esque mine that follows you. Lure it into the cave and get near the other mines, the torpedo mine will take out the glowing one. Or I believe you can use a Charged shot to take them out.

Hope this helps.
m00
>> Or I believe you can use a Charged shot to take them out.

no, that'll only get smaller mines.

You can also shoot or bump a crate into the big mines to make them explode. That's easier and safer, but probably slower than a torpedo.
The only ways I know to destroy the big mines are guiding a seeker torpedo towards them, or hitting them with a crate.

I just arrived at the Factory. I can only play in the weekends, so I won't be able to play for a few days now.

First time I played through, it took me a boatload of tries to beat that game.  Then I finished the entire game, and shelved it for several months.  Just picked it up recently.  When I got to that part, I saved beforehand like usual, but aced him first shot. It's really not hard at all.  Just notice the pattern of which thingy you'll get control of next, and aim the stick in the correct direction before you get control of it, then keep mashing the button.  He can't beat you like that.

Quite simple really.

My run is single-segment, so no saving. I don't play the game against Francis, because I suck at it - I've never managed to win a pearl from him. And I'm pretty sure it's slower than any of the pearls I get, anyway.

Did another run... got 2:50 (almost 2:51). Had a couple deaths. I can time it more accurately now that I'm recording. A couple of those minutes are because I'm not counting the opening cutscene anymore, but it's still around five minutes faster than the last one.

The big mines can also be destroyed by shooting them with the Beluga, but you won't have it at that point in the game.
A while ago I planned a route for fastest 71 pearl completion, and it did have 1 francis pearl in it. The first time it is pretty easy (second time is a bit harder, so I wouldn't get the second one aswell in a speedrun), and getting it only takes about half a minute. Most pearls take at least a minute to collect so if you don't totally mess it up it'll save you some time I guess.
Sleeping Terror
Hmm... if it does take half a minute, then I'd be able to get that instead of the one in the Factory cold storage... that would save me about ten, fifteen seconds... but I'd have to get another animal somewhere else... might take a few more seconds...

It could save time, but not enough that it'd be worth practicing.

Oh, by the way, the lighthouse fish can indeed be found in the factory - it's in the room with the unhelmeted Alpha Section. But it's a bit slower there, since the water is so far down.
SSBM Fanatic
Do you have a list of animals you plan getting? Or are you getting them all for all 4 Pearls?
Sleeping Terror
There are seven rolls of film; all except the first and last get you a pearl. I get five of them.

Roll #1:
1) The Bug
2) Human (probably will move this a bit further down)
3) Lawn Armadillo
4) Pey'j
5) Rhino-person
6) Blob-in-the-ground
7) Small Jelly
8) Large Jelly

Roll #2:
1) Wavy Thing
2) Crochax
3) Glowing Mushy Thing
4) Firefly
5) The Other Bug
6) Flying Glowy Thing
7) Flying Helix
8) Omelette Things

Roll #3:
1) Big Anemone
2) Black Isle Boss
3) Seagull
4) Blue Scorpion Fish
5) Eagle-person
6) Cow-person
7) Shark-person
8) Cat-person

Roll #4:
1) Rat
2) Small Worm
3) Reaper
4) DomZ Sarcophagi
5) Crabwalking Thing
6) Goat-person
7) Frog
8) Bubble Thing

Roll #5:
1) Jumping Blob
2) Eel
3) Ming-Tzu's Fish
4) Ming-Tzu (Walrus-person)
5) Thing In Volcano
6) Blob In Volcano
7) Little Snappy Thing
8) White Rat
Is that the order of you photographing them? (since you mentioned moving the human further down)

For now, I assume it is not, because I'd have a lot of questions then. I do have some now...

Wavy Thing - What is this?
Small Worm - Is this the worm you find at the place where you can collect 3 pearls from 3 Crochax?
Glowing Mushy Thing - If this is what I think it is, you have to take a (small) detour to get it, why take it?
Bubble Thing - It sometimes takes a lot of time, if you miss it, you hit it the first time?
Thing In Volcano -
Blob In Volcano - There is only one new animal I know of in the vulcano...
White Rat - This might be the animal that takes the longest to photograph (after the red thing at the slaughterhouse), are you seriously getting it? (or is it in more than one place in this game)

It made me wonder in what order you collect the pearls... I was thinking of the fastest 71 pearl route a bit... but there is a small problem for getting the jump upgrade:

### DomZ Lighthouse Monster Pearl

>>> to fix your hovercraft

### DomZ Sea Serpent

### Science Center: Film of Animals 2

### DomZ Pterolimax

### Rufus' Booty

### Victory in the Disk Game

>>> Canon

### Science Center: Film of Animals 3

###5 Hillyans' Donations

###3 From the door HH breaks open in the city

### Reaper

### Boss Factory

### Lab

### Torture thing HH was in

---------------------------------------------------------
12/15 pearls for the jump upgrade

So I'm wondering what pearls you did/didn't get...
Sleeping Terror
Yes, that's the order I photograph them in.

Wavy Thing - It's in the same room as the Jellys.
Small Worm - It's on the dead cow in the factory cold storage.
Glowing Mushy Thing - The one I'm thinking of is the one where Pey'j makes a comment about it reminding him of some food. It's not much of a detour (like two seconds), and I need three rolls done to get five pearls for the jump.
Bubble Thing - It's easy to get the first time, and I have to wait a moment for the trolley anyway.
Thing In Volcano - This is also found in Black Isle, in the side area near the entrance, but I don't go there.
White Rat - There's one sitting on a box in the AS area in the guarded canal.

As for the pearls I get...

1) DomZ Lighthouse Monster
>>>Get Hovercraft Motor
2) DomZ Serpent
3) Film Roll #2
4) Black Isle Boss
5) Film Roll #3
6) Rufus' Booty
>>>Get Charge Shot
7) Factory Cold Storage
8) Factory Torture Machine
9) Factory Boss
10) Reaper
11-15) Donations
16-17) Bought from Nouri
18) Shed
19-21) AS area Double-H breaks open
>>>Get Jump Ability
22) Film Roll #4
23) In Slaughterhouse, behind double electric barrier
24) In Slaughterhouse, guarded by Alpha Sections
25) DomZ Serpent
26-37) Donations
38-40) Bought from Ming-Tzu
41-50) Alpha Sections HQ
51) In City, need jump ability
>>>Get Flight Stabilizer
52) DomZ Serpent
53-67) Volcano
68) Film Roll #5
69-71) AS area in guarded canal
>>>Get Stellar Motor
This is really stupid, but I always thought there was only one white rat; in the factory... glad I'm not past that point in my speedrun, I'll save some time.

I have to think a little more and try some things, but your route is certainly interesting...

How about the other bug in the house? The one that pops-out when you kick the barrel? You could get the goat people sooner as well, maybe even Woof but he's on the second floor where you could get him after the second Lighthouse attack.

Just a suggestion, the other bug is close[In the Kitchen I believe] and it wouldn't really be out of the way.
Sleeping Terror
Why? It would just take longer than my current route. I see no benefit from it.
Sleeping Terror
Yay, I got my first no-death run! Total time - 2:46!

Unfortunately, I made one big mistake: I forgot to grab the pearl behind the lasers in the central city area. I was even thinking "make sure to get that one" as I was leaving the Pedestrian District, but that thought flew right on out of my head, and I didn't notice until I was already at Mammago's. Then, after I went back and got it later, I forgot when I was and drove into Mammago's without the Beluga.

I'll try for a better run, but I may send this one in if I don't get one soon.

Near-death experiences:

- You know that room in the lower factory where dozens of small spider robots jump out at you? I hate that room. Because I'd messed up on the Black Isle Boss, I only had two hearts going in, but managed to not die, barely.

- A short series of mistakes put me up against two Alpha Sections guarding a pearl in the Slaughterhouse. Bad luck fighting them cost me five hearts. Luckily, thanks to the K-Bups I had, I came out of it with three hearts - the same as I had gone in with.

- Down in the Alpha Sections area Double-H opens, while approaching the Alpha Section with the instakill laser turrets, I rolled a bit too far and he caught a glimpse of me. I thought I was dead, but he only went into medium alert instead of sounding the alarm.

- Going into the Volcano, I had two bars of energy for the Beluga, and no repair pods. Because I was annoyed at that big mistake, I decided to not pick up the Meca Impulser... so when I went up against the Spider, I had only those two bars. Right before I finished him, I got hit with something that took out one and a half bars... yeouch. With only half a bar left, I was really nervous during the dogfight, even though I almost never get hit there - there are an awful lot of bullets flying around.
Sounds very good, I think the single segment that's gonna be posted here should not contain deaths... must be really hard. I might try a single segment after I'm done with the 100% run, since I'll know the game pretty well by then.

I messed up yesterday, I deleted a segment, I thought I could do better easily. The deleted segment ended up being pretty good... after 3 hours of trying I made it one second faster (I'm happy with the segment now, but if it was worth it?).

I'm now in the upper hall, in the factory, right after you lost Pey'j. The good news is: Double H is still present, so I'll be able to go on. I hope to finish the factory today.
I'm still here!

My, it looks like you've done some amazing progress. Last time I tried a speed run, I clocked in at a tepid, mega-slow time of 3:50. I've stopped practicing, partly because I'm trying for another run, and partly because all of my precious research material was deleted! [heartbroken sobbing] I spent a full week researching which pearls and  PA-1's were worthwhile, and I had the whole run outlined. Then... poof. All gone. [sobbing wildly]

Besides, I'm thankful there's at least somebody doing this speed run. keep at it, I'll cheer you on.

(and watch out, because I'm not giving up just yet...)
Sleeping Terror
2:41!!! 2:41!!! 2:41!!!

This run did contain one death, caused by shooting a few pixels too low in an instakill laser room, but I hardly lost any time. And the rest of the run went well enough that I don't really care about it. I'm satisfied with this one. ^_^

Give me a couple days to encode it (I have a slow computer, and I'm doing low/medium/high quality), and I'll send it in.
