Sleeping Terror
Would anyone like to see a run of this game? I've been planning one out, and it looks like it'd be a good one. You can get through the game very quickly if you know what you're doing.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, the game pulls off the basic Zelda layout well, adds various other stuff into the mix (stealth, vehicles, camera...), and heaps its own style on top. It's a real nice game.

I have the Gamecube version, which I hear has the fastest loading times, so it's ideal for speed running.

Also, what type of run would you rather see - single-segment or no-damage? I'm leaning towards no-damage at the moment. I'll be able to do the run sooner if I keep down the length of game I need memorized at once. I figure a plain speed run would be too easy.

sure, bgae is a great game and it would be fun to see a run.
I'd love to see a speedrun of that game. And personally, I like single-segments so I'd much prefer that.

Yeah, A single-segment would be great !
I love SpeedRuns
I love that game  :monkey:

Pls make one
Sleeping Terror
Good to see more people are interested in it. I admit I haven't been working on it all that much.. but I think I've figured out all I need in terms of the best route and best tactics for each room. I wasn't really planning on making it single-segment... but hey, if you want that, I can do it.

I did a quick runthrough yesterday; took about 3:30. That was with an extra pearl, a handful of extra animals, and several deaths along the way. Should be a good bit faster once I get everything down.
I love SpeedRuns
U are gonna record from gamecube?

If u gonna do that pls edit away the Loadings screens.. i hate them..

If u are gonna play the Pcversion.. do the same thing Roll Eyes
Sleeping Terror
No. I don't edit my speedruns. There isn't much loading anyway; nothing like Resident Evil. Also, I have a policy of not listening to people who can't write properly.
SSBM Fanatic
Yeah, that's just void the speed run if there was any editing.

Really? How long are they? I have the Xbox version, and loading times are 2 seconds long at the very worst.

Not fast enough. The fastest official time is 2:45 (Or something close), as seen at BG&E's official site. (In the darkroom)

Would you be kind enough to share your strategy with the rest of us, so we could try it sometime? I'm thinking of trying a run of the game myself.

I'll have to time it. By now, I've heard conflicting reports of which is faster. If the Xbox version is faster, I'll probably buy that version of the game - it's cheap.

Edit: They're definitely more than two seconds. Guess I'll be getting the Xbox version.

When I looked at the darkroom, that seemed to measure the time it took to collect all the pearls and animals. You can't save after beating the game, so there's no way to see the timer or get a password for the darkroom.

Also, the in-game timer doesn't count something... load times, I assume. Last time I checked, I had about 2:45 ingame at the last save point... that was around 3:10 or 3:15 real time for beating the game. I've gotten down to 3:05, and I know I can go under 3:00 if I don't mess up badly and I don't die. My goal is under 3:00 and no deaths, single-segment.

Sure. Do you have AIM or anything? I don't feel like posting every detail here - gotta have some surprises for when people watch the run - but I'd be glad to help you.

AIM... yes. I just included it in my profile. I will (Hopefully) be on after 6:00pm Eastern. If you can't contact me via AIM, just send me an email or a PM.

Extra pearl... work your strategy better so there are no spare pearls.

Extra animals... If you needed the credits, ok. Otherwise, shrink the number. And remember which animals are worth more.

Deaths... you'll have to practice that more. we should shoot for a no-death run.

Oops. I guess I forgot that. Still, I believe a below-3 hour run is possible. They did a barely above 5 hour OoT run (When I take close to 15 hours on it), so my target is not so far-fetched.
Sleeping Terror
So, I did a run on the Xbox version, and got 3:05, despite a ton of mistakes (mostly due to the unfamiliar controls). It's not as much faster as I had hoped, but it is a bit faster.

Lightweight, are you still around? I haven't heard anything from you.
That's a single segment, collecting 71 pearls?
Sleeping Terror
Yep.

Money, in a sense, isn't really needed right? Unless you want to buy pearls/P.A.s and upgrades at Ming-Shu's shop. Which I still don't see as having a purpose in a speed run.
Are you serious?

"Money, in a sense, isn't really needed right?"

You get it automatically by taking pictures, and alot of animals are on route, so I don't see why you shouldn't take pictures for pearls and money.

"Unless you want to buy pearls/P.A.s and upgrades at Ming-Shu's shop."

You walk right past the store when you go to the Alpha sections HQ, some upgrades might be usefull, and there is another store that sells pearls, buying them takes almost no time.
Sleeping Terror
I get four pearls from photographs, which also gives me enough money to buy everything I want - all five pearls, four PA-1s, one K-Bups, and the upgraded super attack - with a fair amount left over. If I didn't take those photographs, I'd have to collect nine pearls elsewhere, and that would take a long time. Plus I wouldn't have the upgraded super, which saves time in a few spots.

By my count, there are 73 pearls in the game that can be collected quickly, and you need 71 to beat the game.

Re-thinking it, money is fairly easy to aquire. I believe after buying the motors for the Hovercraft and 2 Looter's Caverns later I cleaned out Ming Tzu's shop.
I also wondered what the fastest 71-pearl route would be, and also came to about 4 pearls from photography. I don't think you should go to any Looters Caverns.

The segmented 100% (all animals an pearls) run I'm working on doesn't take PA1's or food, but you have to on a single segment.

I've almost finished black Isle now, just thinking whether or not to redo my last segment.
Sleeping Terror
Yeah, I don't go to any Looter's Caverns. Or win any races. They take too long for only one pearl.

Baxter, how long are your segments?
I've been thinking about how long to make them, but what I've done sofar is just playing the route I planned as fast as possible, and saving everywhere where it is convenient. Saving does take a few seconds, but I figured by playing without making any mistakes saves those seconds, and it looks better. The smallest segments are a little over 3 minutes, the longest a little over 10 minutes.

Sofar I saved at:
- Pey'j's Workshop
- Mammago Garage
- Pitch Black Mining
- Ancient Mine (After Secondary Shaft)
- Ancient Mine (After opening the door for Pey'j's)
Sleeping Terror
Pey'j's Workshop and Mammago Garage? Unless you're doing something weird, there's nothing between those but pushing a box and a short hovercraft trip.

I'd recommend making as many segments as you need. Save points are common; make the most of them! If you want to be impressive, never take any damage. It can be tricky in spots, but I know it's quite possible.
In the first segment, you have to wait about 3 minutes before you can even start playing. Then you have to do the opening battle very fast, which goes more often wrong than right due to random factors or just a minor mistake. Then there is a cutscene you have to wait for. The DomZ moster is pretty easy, and after that a very long cutscene follows. Then you must take the pictures as fast as possible and run to Pey'j'. It sounds pretty easy, but the waits in between are very long, so after I got it right, I was pretty happy.

In the second segment there is one thing that goes wrong very often. It's taking a picture of the fish on the hovercraft in the hangar. Then there are the normal things that can go wrong.

The reason I save at Mammago Garage is that you'll have to wait for your hovercraft to be finshed otherwise. Pey'j entering the hovercraft is also a pretty random factor.

I agree that I should make as less segments possible, but I want the movie to be without any real errors.

Never taking damage is very possible. However in some places it's faster to take damage. I'm not sure, but I'm leaning towards taking damage to save time.
Glub glub.

I have not played for a while, but I do remember that there is another place you can find that picture that makes it easier to deal with.  Somewhere in Black Isle or the Nutrapils Factory, I think.  Well, I thought it was easier, anyway.
