Old Thread

I've been wanting to tackle this one for a while.  Damurdoc's run actually pretty solid and well-executed... I especially applaud him for choosing the sorcerer class, as it was clever and worked out surprisingly well.

I'm positive this run could be beaten.  Damurdoc plays his strategies well, but fails to utilize some of the game's more obscure and powerful exploits.

Additionally, I plan to do some tests with classes other than sorcerer.  The results will determine how much of the run is composed of unique tactics and how much is simply improvement of the existing one.

Ideally someone would finish a run completely through BGII and Throne of Bhall, but my first focus will be without the expansion.

Finally... Damurdoc uses the unpatched 1.0 version of BGII, which seems like a bad move to me.  Isnt it assumed that PC games should use the appropriate official patches?  Would a run on the patched version be in a different category or the same one?

I think its at the runners option to either use a completely unpatched version, or a fully patched version. The only significant change that comes to mind is whether they fixed the fact that you can use Knock to unlock containers you shouldn't be able to otherwise (specifically the one on the second level of that bar during the Shadow Theives quest... details fuzzy in my mind, since I haven't played the game in a while).

If you're serious about this, I'm going to keep an eye on the thread. Damurdoc's (sp?) run is impressive, and an improvement it is going to be tough but really fun to watch.

Never give up!
As far as patches.... if using patches changes the game mechanics, it'll have to be a separate category (as an example from a different game, I think the Mafia run was done on the one version that allowed a certain glitch).  Other than that, I'm not sure patches even matter.

Also, I did enjoy Damurdoc's run, even though I didn't understand much of what was being said (I believe Damurdoc used the French version, and I'm only slightly familiar with that language.  Besides, language is the least of my concerns as far as a speedrun goes).  So I'd definitely watch an improved version.
an interesting tidbit concerning BG II speedrunning...

Here are the fastest characters in the game (in terms of base movement speed) in order

1) barbarian with haste/Boots of speed/oil of speed
2) 40th level monk (if playing Throne of Ball)
3) all classes except monk with haste/Boots of speed/oil of speed
4) barbarian/monk
5) all classes

I'd really love to make a run with a barbarian or monk (TOB only), but i'm not sure yet if they can handle the game as well as a sorcerer can.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
If you're planning to run through the game solo, I'm not sure how you would beat a variety of situations with a barbarian. You won't have stealth/invisiblity, and you won't have any way of dealing with magical defenses (Greater Stoneskin and Protection from Magical Weapons come to mind). You'll also have to provide your own haste (probably potions).

It's worth looking into to see if a barbarian with 25 strength and a great axe could just run in and kill the mage opponents with a crit before they can get a spell off, I suppose. Barring that, I don't see how it could be done, but I'd be happy to have you prove me wrong Smiley
There is a pretty big bug in BG that allows characters to use a variety of magic-related items that are restricted to their classes.  It has to do with drinking a potion directly from your inventory and then replacing it with an alternate item that you want to use.  The game will then "activate" the replaced item instead of gulping the potion.

1)Go to inventory screen
2)Right-click a potion and drink it
3)Pick up a scroll/wand and place place it into the slot where the potion is
4)Return to game
5)Viola our barbarian hero just cast invisibility or remove magic or find familiar, etc

Unfortunately effects and spells can only be targetted on the PC

PS.  there is a variation of this trick that duplicates gems and can net you tons of gold in a matter of seconds (this will cut several minutes off of the existing run by eliminating chapter 2).

Just an update on the run:  I've done a lot of testing and decided to go with the sorcerer class like damurdoc.  I'm currently still in my planning run - about to start chapter 4.  So far i have used a number of glitches ...  the run is only vaguely similar to the current one.

In my test run i've also discovered some timesaving exploits on my own that i'm quite proud of Smiley  Including a way to skip at least 1 long cutscene and 2 different ways of glitching through locked doors.  I was thinking about  making some movie clips if there are some BGII fans here who would be interested

Well, you can amaze us now, or you could blow us away in one fell swoop with the final product. Either way works for me Smiley

I'd rather wait for you to finish it and then show us :p along with an explanation of the tricks used Cheesy

how's it goin?
Still planning...

I've been putting in some time but there are a lot of choices and options to consider.  Way more complicated than BG I Smiley

Clone you probably know this  page...

I hope your BGII will be as perfect as your BGI run, that was really a impressive improvement Smiley

So you're going with Sorcerer? That makes a me a little sad... the potion swap trick sounds like it would make a barbarian into the best choice. Granted, you'd need a bunch of scrolls of haste for the beginning (not an option for the beginner dungeon), but the increased speed of movement seems like it would probably pay off.

How much time do you lose screwing around in your inventory every time you "cast" a spell? 2 seconds or so? If so, that sounds managable, but I could see it being aggrivating after a while.

Oh, and the duplication trick for gold sounds nice. That saves about 10 minutes right there, doesn't it?

From that site...

"The rift device is one of the most ridiculously overpowering items in the game, it is a ranged harm(as per the cleric spell Harm) wand, unstoppable by magic resistance or saves, and it punches thru any spell protection, and it always drops the enemies hit points by 90%!!!!!!!!!!!! thus they only have 10% of their hit points left after being hit by it...and best of all, using project image or simmy spell, you can have your image or simmy use the item, thus never expend it, since it only has a single charge...too bad you can never take it out of the temple sewers, as the game will insta-kill you if you try....but you knew i knew of a way, right???  Make sure you choose lawful neutral alignment when the game starts, or edit via shadowkeeper, then summon a familiar via the spell...(can be found in Nalia's Keep near the forge for the flail of the ages) and you now have a ferret familiar....after you assemble the rod, and kill the unseeing eye by meelee or spells, have a npc remove all items on that npc, and only have the rod in the inventory.  Release the ferret from your pc's inventory, and have the ferret pick pocket the npc with no items except the rift device,  and after several tries, the ferret will pickpocket the npc....put the ferret back into your inventory, and finish up and leave the temple sewers...release the ferret again, and talk to it, and have it give you all the items it pickpocketed to you...you now have the most powerful wand in the game!!!! the "space" pickpocketed items inhabit on a familiar bypasses the game engine checks, and allows you to smuggle items out past game engine "checkpoints"...just be careful, make sure you do not have the rift device in inventory when you go back to the temple sewers, or you will be killed...this also works for drow items from the underdark, however the ferret is limited to smuggling 2 items only past the checks at the elven camp...and of course if you go back to the elven encampment with drow items in your inventory, they will crumble to dust....let your friendly ferret hold them until you get to the elven city..."

useful? I mean, instantly killing Irenicus would definitely be useful, but would it be faster to just kill him the regular way (this includes all of the boss fights)
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
It takes really a long way to get it, that's definetly not Useful...
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Hey anyone who is interested.

I'm a BG2 powergamer and I play with mods, so speed runs are pretty much out for me.  I could do it, but I don't enjoy not "finishing" a game.

However, there are some spots that can be COMPLETELY skipped.

There is no doubt that a sorcerer is by far the best choice for the run.  Keep in mind that constitution 6-14 are all equivalent, and 16 is essentially the max for non fighters.  20 con starts giving you regeneration at like 1hp/turn.  Dex 18 is much better.  Int/Wis/Cha have no effect on anything except a few dialogue checks.  Most of them are on non important quests.  so 18/18/16/9/9/9 is still good.

In Chateau Irenicus, you can just pickpocket the key from the golem, however I don't know how useful that is.  You do lose out on a small bit of exp.

Imoen is a tank, if you choose to use her.  You can glitch her to never die, and use her to get rid of the traps (either by disarm or just set them off).

It is probably worthwhile to get the boots of speed in the asylum, even if it takes an extra few minutes.

In the tests, if you get everything right, then miss the very last question, you dont have to fight anything.

In the underdark, just steal the stone, turn into a drow, then go to the gate and convince the guard to let you through (requires cha check).

If it saves time, you can drop all your items, and give all your magic items to the dragon to get the goblet easy, but you have to pickup the rest of your stuff.

If it's possible, it might be worthwhile to pickup the robe of vecna from the bonus merchants.  Technically, it requires a mod, or just the collector's edition.

Doing the rift device takes a lot of time, and requires you to cast a very high level 7 project image to use effectively, so it's not efficient.

I hope someone can use this to help.

is my moment of glory soon to end? We shall see...
Maybe i deserve to be beaten since im such a lazy bum

Also there is absolutly no way you can beat the time without a sorcerer.

I already knew people would be able to beat my time... All you have to do is do the same thing that i did, fix a few mistakes and voila!

I am not the greatest runner but hell i was the first to do it and nobody believe me when i said it would take less then 2 hours.

As our little bard would say, nothing is eternal everything will become dust day.

Oh and the reason i did it on the first patch without TOB is because i wanted to play the Original bg2 without any add-on or fixes. Real-deal is what a speedrun should be.

Oh, and i will also add that you have to make your character from scratch, no import... I was quite obviously refering to this statement

OK now somebody make an iwd2 run :E
Bumping this thread!

Well, its been a long time since I posted here and although my run of BG II was postponed, I'm happy to report that it was always in the back of my mind, and now that I have some free time, it WILL BE COMPLETED.  I tested runs for the past 3 weeks or so and plan to begin recording soon.

I have come across some great exploits and tricks that will make for a big improvement to the existing record and a fun speedrun to watch.

Here is a list of objectives which I have so far found unavoidable (ie MUST be accomplished in order to progress with the game). It is my hope that through brainstorming we can further cut out some of these steps.  If part of the game isn't listed here then you can assume that its not necessary to the core plot or that I've found some glitch or exploit to bypass it (ie all of spellhold Grin )

Ch. 1 (Dungeon escape)
-Get the dungeon portal key
-Activate a portal
-Exit Irenicus' dungeon
-Talk to Gaelan Bayle

Ch. 2 (Raise money)
-Get 15,000+ gold
-Talk to Bodhi and side with her

Ch. 3 (Bodhi's Quests)
-Kill (or pickpocket) Mook to get the shipment
-Return to Bodhi
-Kill Gaelan Bayle and get the cellar key
-Kill (or rescue) Palern Flynn in the thieves guild
-Enter T.G. cellar
-Kill Aran Linvail
-Return to Bodhi

Ch. 4 (Brynnlaw and Spellhold)
-Kill (or pickpocket) Perth to get the wardstone
-Enter the Asylum
-Activate Portal to the Underdark

Ch. 5 (Underdark)
-Kill (or pickpocket) Goldander Blackenrock to get the Light Gem
-Enter the dragon lair
-Kill the Dragon Adalon to get her Note (Drow Runes of Sundering)
-Open gate and exit the Underdark

Ch. 6 (Defeat Bodhi)
-Enlist Drizzt & Co.
-Enter Bodhi's Lair and access the inner sanctum
-Defeat Bodhi and stake her to get the Rynn Lanthorn
-Talk to Elhan
-Enter Suldanessellar

Ch. 7 (Suldanessellar + Hell)
-Get the 3 artifacts of Rillifane
-Get the stone horn and harp
-Place the 3 artifacts on the temple alter to summon the Avatar
-Enter Palace
-Get nuts from the tree
-Place horn and harp on statues
-Enter tree of life
-Activate parasite #1, kill its 2 guardians, destroy parasite
-Activate parasite #2, kill its 2 guardians, destroy parasite
-Activate parasite #3, kill its 2 guardians, destroy parasite
-Defeat Irenicus, follow him to hell

-Get 1 Tear of Bhall
-Activate the Abyssal Door
-Kill Irenicus

1)Looking for input on possible ways to cut down the checklist.

Particularly annoying is the section in Suldansessellar and the Tree of Life.  I've been unable to find any shortcuts here.  Tracking all over to collect the 5 artifacts seems like a waste, as does visiting all the tree parasites and killing off 6 guardians, but I can't find a way around it.

Another awkward area is in Chapter 3.  I would love to hit up all 3 of Bodhi's jobs in one trip, but unfortunately the game doesn't work that way.  Mook is a given and you can kill Linvail at any time, but you have to walk all the way back to Bodhi after you get the package from Mook before you can accomplish her 2nd job (the NPC's simply don't spawn until you've returned to her with the package).  If someone knows a way around this, that would be a big time saver.

2) Tactics advice for some of the fights.  Cheese is welcome but remember it has to be FAST and easily (quickly) obtainable to a lvl 12 sorcerer.  Most of the enemies are easily dealt with but here are some the fights I think could be improved:

Bodhi- She is tough and currently I rely on Drizzt to do most of the work.  She is immune to instant death magic.  Any suggestions?

Parasite guardians- I've come to enlisting Korgan to help with these guys, that's how annoying they are.  A variety of damage spells and Melf's Meteors (+Korgan beating on them with an axe) is pretty efficient but there HAS to be a better way.

Irenicus #1 (in the tree)- Clouldkill and area damage from off-screen.  Oldest cheese in the book but neither as elegant nor fast as I would like.

Irenicus #2 (hell)- I have a pretty good strat that involves placing some skull traps which get him down to about 25 hp.  Then hit with a sequencer of 2 magic missiles before his contingencies or regeneration can save him.  Any other ideas?

I find it amusing that the run is doing everything in full speed by killing dragons and terrible foes and the parasite gardians give you trouble so you need an ally.

Don't get me wrong I dont have an answer to that either but I'm pretty sure that way I did it was the fastest way since Jan had to follow me to hell anyway Tongue

As for bodhi I don't see any other way to beat her... maybe something that involve the Slayer would help.
