In NG, PB+WO is faster than BQ because you have no fast way to kill Sir Lunky and no Cham-Pain.

In my NG 15:43, it took 2:57 between traveling to PB and dropping in the first shard after WO (note that I fell once in PB). In Buddha's NG+ 14:30, it took 2:48 between traveling to BQ and dropping in the first shard after the invasion (no falls). You can definitely do WO a little faster in NG+, but probably not enough faster to top BQ.
looks like i have some more skips to find then
Oh, and adding Black Rye to NG+ would also cost like 2 extra seconds.

Hum. Ok, good to note.

Well, grats to vulajin on the 14:25. Only 4 seconds slower than my best segments. O_o

On the other hand, I did one run on my laptop immediately after and got a 14:42. So I'm not quite as rusty as I thought.
The aforementioned 14:25 NG+ any%: http://www.twitch.tv/vulajin/c/3411723

Sum of best is 14:08, this run is not very good and I think Buddha can top it soon.

Lol. Practicing now, but need to review how to do the 2nd to last jump at PB. I just can't seem to land it.

EDIT: Nevermind, changing this to a more marathon safe run :T. Gonna skip the 2nd jump for an extra chance at the 4th jump on PB for the marathon

Ok, I'm getting more pissed off trying to get fucking twitch to work than the 2 hours of fails I was having on PB. This is pants on head retarded how annoying it is to get this shit to work. I really can't understand why they've made it this annoying and convoluted to setup. Livestream does an infinitely better job than these guys :\

Anyone have any good guides for setting up their twitch accounts?
Wow. I came here to introduce myself, ask a few questions, check I wasn't trying to learn from too old a version of the Bastion Any% run and suddenly the time is a solid minute faster and I have a ton more stuff to learn! You guys never fail to impress me and I'm glad you're still improving the run; I'm struggling to keep up!

Alas, hello. I'm learning to speedrun Bastion any% as a bit of fun and as my entry game into actually doing runs rather than just watching them. Looking forward to AGDQ (though I might not be able to watch live due to having to work!) but I'll be supporting you from wherever I am. Any tips for a fledgling runner? I'm on the PC version and everything and using the old route I have a time of 19:30, which is terrible but I struggle to beat it. I don't know whether having a 360 controller plugged in to my pc affects the roll speed in any way but between my inexperience and watching Vulajin's runs they feel really sluggish.

Looks like I'll be spending my time tomorrow learning the new route and streaming to try and get a few friends into speedrunning before AGDQ!
Welcome! Always glad to see more people picking this game up. As always, if you have videos somewhere that you could link (keep in mind, all of us were terrible at one point, so no need to be bashful), we can help you out with specific tips.

As a general note, the biggest time loss is almost always from falling. Each fall costs 2.5 seconds (the first is 3.5), and they can rapidly add up if you're not confident in the lay of the land. Before you acquire that confidence, it's okay to be a little more conservative in your movement. (Don't literally walk everywhere, but it's okay to take your time in a few spots.)
Did some NG any% practice tonight, improved the record to 15:40: http://www.twitch.tv/vulajin/c/3426268

Hai, and welcome! I just started speedrunning this game myself a few weeks ago. The route was just improved quite a bit for NG Any% (Normal Game) in the last two weeks, so things have been gettin' good.

Tips to start with are:
- Use Mouse Movement (NOT controller/WASD). The reason is that the roll speed for these replaces your current walking speed, while Mouse movement ADDS it to your current walking speed, resulting in much faster movement.
- If you haven't already, go into the Game Properties > Set Launch Options and add this: -nofixedstep . The game was made to run at 60 FPS, but is limited to about 40 by default for the XBLA release. Basically you've been playing the game at 66% speed this entire time if you haven't set this option ^^

Other than that, lots of practice. Learn the skips and what works best for you, and especially the areas with land that load slower than others.

Oh yeah, and I can't wait to see your run of Bastion at ADGQ Vula. I'll donate 50 bucks if you break the world record on stream ^^
Cheers guys, did not know about the -nofixedstep thing and now I understand why it looked/felt sluggish in comparison!

Already feeling a lot faster, if I get a semi-decent run tonight I'll post it up here though that depends on how good/lucky I get with those vaults at PB.

Grats on the new record Vulajin, can't wait to see it smashed again. Smiley
This launch parameter seems to have strange and negative effects on the game and I wouldn't recommend it. None of the other runners use it.

Not even sure if it should be allowed because it's externally modifying the game.
To expand upon that a little - I did 5 runs with -nofixedstep yesterday (where I've never used it before), and had some very odd lag effects at various points. Here's an example: http://www.twitch.tv/vulajin/c/3433805

That is very strange Vulajin. I have never experienced the problem in the vid. What is the otherway to unlock the FPS to 60?

Do you have V-sync enabled and is your monitor refresh rate 60Hz?? If its more (such as a 120Hz) or if V-sync is disabled wonky things can happen. It's actually quite hysterical looking at the model animations in 550 FPS (I disabled V-sync for a laugh, and it was hysterical)

I have V-sync enabled and my monitor is 60 Hz. I play windowed, and have never had to do anything to unlock to 60. I recall earlier in the thread that Mazei had to disable V-sync in order to get his game to run at the right speed, but I've never heard of anyone using nofixedstep. Perhaps these both have the same intention? Where did you find out about nofixedstep, anyway?

Incidentally, I got a 15:28 in NG any% today. Twice. Here's the first one: http://www.twitch.tv/vulajin/c/3434927
2bitmarksman is it possible to see a video of you running this game both with and without -nofixedstep?

Ideally your aim should be trying to get the game running at the same speed as everyone elses, not to get the game running as fast as possible (or faster than intended). Generally speaking, if it's not in-game settings you're changing, it probably isn't a good idea.
Well looks like my run is over. My laptop can no longer run the game without freezing up at least once every 5 minutes. Had a run going earlier that could have been a 14:20 but I lost ~ 7 seconds on RL because of it.

I would try to run it on my desktop but the timing is so different that I got the hanging gardens vault something like 3 times in 15-20 minutes.

I can yes, I'll try to get that done by midday today if possible. But how are you guys able to get what appears to be 60 FPS ingame? My game acts so much slower in comparison without this option.

Also, the game itself is intended to run at exactly 60 FPS (To quote Guns1nger from Supergiant Games; steam forums are down, I'll get a link to the page when its back up). The game software limits the FPS to that so that it works on XBLA by default.

What -nofixedstep does is hands over control of the FPS of the game to the hardware rather than have the software dictate it.

Just did some real quick tests. I might be able to still run the game, but i wont be able to stream any of it. Sad

In my opinion, regardless of what was intended, it seems silly to me to allow this obscure option. Anyone that wanted to run this game then would have to read this forum (or find out about it elsewhere) to even have a chance to compete. I think the game should be ran how it is when it's sold, not how it was intended to be (but never was).

If it were patched (officially) to 60fps that's a different story

We aren't doing anything to speed up our games. That's why I'm curious to see a video of your game running slower. Are you using the latest version of the game? Have you torrented a bad copy or something?

Best of luck fixing your laptop/Bastion Buddha Sad

I will post an updated run with and without -nofixedstep with times in the next hour or so.
