I figured it's time to get this done, so I'm giving it a shot. Here's some notes on the start for the run:
-Jumping about is faster than running and just as easy to control
-Picking up the Archer Class yields you the repulsion after you gain the fourth level, approx. after the Orb battle.
-Easy difficulty is a necessity to clear the boss battles fast with a under-level character
-However, there would be some leveling going on because the boss battles give you lots of experience when completed with a low-level character
-To advance swiftly, one needs to gain a potion of recall during or right after killing the rats
- -"-, one needs to gain +1 Morning Star of Distruption. It is found in one of the chests in the Orb levels. I think the place is fixed
-Loads of potions are to be bought, which is accomplished by collecting random junk along the way. Unfortunately, buying is made rather slow, so it'll take some time whenever they are bought
-Because of the very simplified leveling system, the game supports highly the low-level gameplay on the easy difficulty, since most of the statistics are determined by your inventory. Some details, like hit points and spells, can be circumvented (loads of potions and manipulating spells only, in this case). The damage is done with the power of the items I'll get (which, again, is accomplished by grabbing all the random junk along the way that costs from little to no time.
-I am considering a single player achievement, but alternatively two players could be faster since you could a) abuse the hell out of save points b) get some spells in the game that is outside of Archer's reach. On the  other hand, avoiding minions would be trickier; it's odd as it is to make way with repulsion and jumping in the small gaps that's created, in the worst case.

I played as far as the Mine Camp, but after that the more specific plans are yet to be made.

So... would there be any interest whatsoever towards this if I go through with this? I know it's on the request list, but since I was the one making the request, it tells me nothing.
Thread title:
This was a great game. I played a lot when I was younger. I'd definatly watch it. I can't help you with anything because I don't have the game, and no longer have a PS2.
100% runs=great to watch
I'd just recently gotten and been playing through the game on the GCN version myself....though as a Dwarf not an Archer.  Moreso than jumping, the BLOCK BUTTON lends this game towards speedrunning moreso than anything....only annoying shit like those Electric balls on the Ice Mountain climb can withstand the holy might of the block button.

I'll definitely look forward to seeing this, even if it only winds up being on Easy difficulty.  What's the skill distro gameplan for the Archer aiming to be though?

I made a practice run to Winds Walk (right after you beat the beholder), clocking in at 24 minutes. Although improvable, it's will be rather difficult since I was only level 5 at that point. To be honest, the only really difficult part was killing the Orb, since you have to beat a bunch of skeletons to get to the second (and final) round.  I can get the guy strike hard enough, but he doesn't take hits too well, even with potions it's pain. I had to buy a padded armor <<;

Some weapons, like Morning Star of Distruption +1, are indeed in fixed locations. The said weapon is right on my way, so it's only a given that I take it.

Now I have to find out where I get the Fine Short Bow +1 I have in the save I talked about. Probably got that from either the Karne or the beholder thingy. Yet to find out.

Why Archer? Well, first of all, he has Repulsion, the handiest tool ever to pass through enemies that block your path. There are some other reasons, too:
-some of his abilities, like Hail of Arrows, enhance his weapon, and thus are useful even if I can't boost them much
-he's a decent melee fighter if it's absolutely necessary (and that's mostly the case). Well, better than the Sorceress, at least

I haven't thought it through yet (I'm only currently planning on it, playing through and making notes), but the most useful abilities on archer (aside from Repulsion) are things like Hail of Arrows (shotgun variant), Ice Arrow (IIRC, it has a freezes enemies. If not, then it's useless), the usual Deflect Missiles and the increase in hitting speed (forgot the name...) and Enchant Arrows (to boost the Hail of Arrows).

I'm not sure if Arcane Quiver is worth it, though.

The block button isn't too useful, speed run -wise, since it induces timeloss.

I'm playing the Xbox version, BTW.

I'd watch it, but I'd find a 2-player Normal difficulty the most entertaining.

Me and my friend started planning that once, but we quickly dismissed it since the planning and shit would take more time that we had.
Akuma ma ta ta, what a wonderful phrase!
yeah i liked this game a lot
But with a low level character, maybe you'll have a hard time with the final boss, and with the lizard boss too (he hits really hard)
well, i wish you good luck!
and yeah, a two player run would be fun to watch

It's an enjoyable game to play, but it is rather boring to watch (unless you think you can beat it without killing much). I mentioned this game a few years back and tested out a few things, but came to the conclusion it was too yawnworthy.

Most of the game consist of confused enemies watching me hop around collecting the most crucial items and killing more bosses than minions. This is why I need to do it on Easy.

Most of the levels are gained by killing arbitrary bosses. I can gain some extra experience by killing enemies on the Dwarven Mines by lighting the powder kegs that lie all over the place.

On level 9, I'll have Repulsion level 1 and Shock Arrow level 2, which results in a quick disposal of the Ice Dragon. Level 8 would probably do, too, since I'd had the Shock arrow level 1, which would be enough for the Ice Dragon, even if a bit slower.

Killing the Drow Queen is somewhat slow because of the constant teleportations. I need to come up with some cunning stunt to get through it faster.

I'm now planning on how to get through the Sunken Chapel. I'm on level 10 now. In a speed run the level would likely be either 9 or 10. I'm not sure if getting there with a level 8 character is possible, because it's mostly the bosses alone that give you  the experience in this test play-through.

Hmm...if trying to low level it via bosses....Would it make an interesting difference to spend the stat point on the attribute that boosts the EXP gained by a percentage?  Think it was Wisdom offhand...

Or would you need it for dex?
That's an interesting thought. So far I've been getting only Strenght to boost the boss battles, as most of the early ones are done the fastest in melee (because there are no good bows or spells at hand). I think it also gives hit points(?) or increases weight capacity.

Boosting Wisdom after the Dragon battle would likely be worth it.

I just destroyed Eldrith with my level 11 character, which made me lol. There's a Mace that deals 5x-7x (x as in unknown number, not "times") damage and some half plate mail +5 that I found in the Onyx tower. The time was probably around an hour and 45-50 minutes, but this is highly improvable since I wandered a bit without knowing where to go.

The Lightning Arrow doesn't affect Eldrith (and isn't good on the Lizard king), so upgrading it after the Dragon fight is unnecessary. I'll have to go with some more effective spell, then. Suggestions?

Where can I get the Onyx Sword, BTW? I can't remember...

Not in line with what ya just asked about, but I guess it would also bear minding to hotswap any kind of Wisdom boosting rings/ammy, should they even be findable, shortly prior to dealing any killing blows on major foes or completing quests.
Such items are either really expensive, far out of the way or available very late in the game. Also, the non-leveling doesn't really bother me, since the biggest problems tend to be the Orb (not really that hard), snaking through a sea of blobs (slightly luck-related, eased by more segments if necessary), the blue balls (just need to have enough potions an' all's well), the drow queen (slow <<;) and finally, the classic you-are-surrounded-by-a-batch-of-enemies-that-kill-you-in-a-split-second-because-they-hit-all-at-once-and-you-didn't-do-the-repulsion-in-time situation. These are the hardest parts of the game I can remember when playing it low.

Today, I got from the beginning to the mine town in 24 minutes (semi-heavy segmenting was involved). I'm thinking the game might be doable in one and a half hours, but that's a very rough estimate.

Well, drops might get lucky, or the shop may show up for something cheapish depending on everything.  There's one guide at Gamefaqs that actually states outside of blocking, all armor is worthless for the most part due to an error in the game that they didn't correct in time...dunno if that's been generally corroboratred all the way through or not though, but the writer seemed fairly adamant.

Mainly, the thought I had in my head was that an extra level or so for "free" could be used towards the speedup attack skill towards endgame...where if ya can't unleash power then unleashing what can can quickly would make sense. Survival ya seem to have generally down, so speed is about the only thing left I can think of save for perhaps killing power.

Read through any of this?

There wasn't much to go with, but it seems that I will indeed go through the game with my trusty Worn Short Bow (damage is like 2-4...), 'cause I'll have the Elemental shots, such as the Lightning, which, according to the guide, ignores the bow completely, as long as you're using one, lol.

I must say that I doubt the statement very much, because, per my experience, armors increase my survival rate. Perhaps it is a problem in the PS2 version?

Who knows....I'm not sure which version the author was going on about, but with his supposed dev quote....

I'm on the GCN version, which is prolly the least FAQ'd compared to the more prevalent PS2 one.

Ice Arrow sounded useful to me due to the chill factor....but Lightning was far and away the strongest it seems.

The onyx golem or whatever it is drops it.

Oh, right... thanks. I just hopped past it (I don't have time for insignificant tasks like that!) and chopped Eldrith. I was just thinking if it's faster to get that weapon somewhere, but it's probably not. Well, maybe with Hail of Arrows... but not with the Worn Short Bow Smiley

So I made the first segment today yesterday. According to the game's internal clock the time from the start to the end of the cellar is done in two minutes, but my recorder's clock says it's about 2:59 from the very start when I gain control in the main menu to the instant it says "saving". There are loading times and the lenthy intro (the part that you can't skip) included.

Next part will likely be from there to the room where there're three switches and loads of javelin enemies. It's so short because I have to manipulate luck to get a recall potion from a chest behind the secret wall, so I can get the key to the sewers without losing much time. It's a bit unlikely to happen, but it occurs from time to time if you keep loading long enough.

By recalling I can also sell all the crap I don't need, put on the crap I need, gain a level to regain the lost health and to buy another recall potion, plus a health potion. I get another one, too, from the drunkard. The timeloss is so insignificant I figured I could take it.

I'm not putting it up yet because I need to set the encoder up since I lost the settings when my hard drives broke.

E: The video is up now. Feel free to criticize.

YouTube! 'Tis horrible! My eyes! They are burnin'!

Alternative download possibility at FileFront has been done because of this. Notify if the visual quality of the recording isn't good enough (bad signal etc.), considering SDA standards.

Hmm....any special/magical reason where I get audio in the stream but no video aside from shaky gray/black boxes and the like?  First time I've encountered streaming on filefront.

Maybe FileFront doesn't support the highly advanced codecs I use? Roll Eyes YouTube shows it fine, aside from the fact that anything you put into it turns into utter crap.

E: I downloaded the file, and the file itself seems intact. It has to be some sort of compatibility issue in the stream.

That happens to every AVI preview on FileFront I've ever seen.
Never give up!
Well, the only issue I can see with this segment is that as far as I remember, you don't need to talk to Nebbish to get the drink he requests - you can just talk to him afterwards.

I'm pretty sure that if you do the 'medallion' and 'spices' sidequests, you have to talk to the people who give those, but if either of those sidequests are in your plans, that might be something to investigate.

I also seem to remember one treasure chest in the cellar always dropping a Recall Potion.  Except I forget which one it is.
Hmm... pie?
Are you sure sorcerer wouldn't be better?

I had trouble against the last boss, but, overall, it was quite easy.

Though, dwarf was the easiest for me. Also, Onix Sword... that makes the boss a lot easier.

To get it you have to kill a (mandatory?) big monster. It has 100% chance to drop.
