Hi,

Has anybody ever tried to do a Baldur's Gate 1 speed run?
I googled around a bit, but haven't found anything, so I decided to do my own run.

Well, I've planned a route for the game and completed it in 2 hours. From the character generation till Sarevoks death without saving.
However I haven't yet recorded a video of the run.

What do you think? Interessted in a video?

Wow, I would be very interested! I played this game for hours back a couple of years ago, and never completed it!

How much of an issue is randomness?

I remember when I played Icewind Dale (based on same rules and same engine) you could get whipped early in the game by rats and inferior stuff like that if the dice simulator hates you...
randomness isn't a big issue

random encouters can be escaped from very easily. Only random encouters with raiders in the first ~15 minutes of the game are very dangerous.

Except this, there is not much randomness. And the run is made with a Fighter/Thief and stealth mode is almost always activated, so I avoid unnecessary fights.

Seems to be fine, but then again I haven't played BG1.

You should include character generation into the video, so people can see were you spend your points.

Yes, I've already planned to include that.
Fight, Crocogator, for everlasting peace!
Hell, I'd watch it. Even cheating my characters to rediculous levels, I could never beat that game. Stupid basilisks.

I'm addicted to games
I've received Julien's run, the time is 1:11:08. Who wants to verify? (EDIT: found one already)

BTW what's the saving system like in this game, is it save-anywhere and resume in exactly the same state like most PC games?

It is not save anywhere. You have to be not in any fights, nor have any living enemies on your screen to be able save.

I don't know for sure, but on loading sometimes drops or monster corpses are removed, but slain monsters never come back. Monster spawns are set in stone from the beginning I think.

correct
and the game can't be saved if a NPC wants to start a dialogue with you (if he's walking towards you and his default voice sample is played) or if you are in a dialogue

Yes, corpses are always removed.
slain monsters usually don't come back, however in some areas are spawn points where always new monsters appear
dropped items are removed after a certain time (don't know how long it takes)
the run is online Smiley
A Crab
Dang... it's in German.  Sad
Your almighty lordship
Wow, the run is really nicely done. I'm surprised such a combat oriented game can be driven like so. I was wondering, what program did you used to capture the run? The quality is quite nice.
I used Camtasia to record the run
Fraps didn't work with BG :-/
Your almighty lordship
I can't seem to get Camtasia to record anything properly. What settings did you have it on?
I recorded with camtasia's own codec, 25 FPS and mono audio.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
i just finished playing BG2-ToB again and wondered if anyone planed on speedrunning the Addon for BG1... or even BG2 with the addon, which would be impressive
Speedrunning the BG1 addon wouldn't make much sense I think.
It integrates seamless with BG, it's non-linear and it doesn't have it's own story plot

I've already thought about speedrunning BG2.. Maybe I'll try it in the next semester break Wink
ToB would also be speedrunable since it has it's own story plot.
Do you think a speedrun with a character who has already finished the game 7times (at least) and took all the book to improve his capacity at each play would be interesting?

I think i could do that but i'm not sure it would be very funny....
hm I don't know..
Wouldn't be a very big challenge to do a run with a godlike character.
