Hello, my fellow gamers! Do you have games that launch Netscape Navigator and the printer spool process when you open them up? Is the frame rate the same as your character's polygon count? Have you ever gotten a blue screen of death... on a console? Did you promise at SGDQ that you'd run Heavy Nova? Then this is the marathon for you! Right now, I want to set up a marathon including all those hushed games that are legends among gamers. Yes, I know some of us run them. Yes, I know some of us have problems. Thank goodness for that.

This marathon is in the early planning stage! We have many things to discuss, but I'd also love to start hearing game suggestions. Here's a list of things I want to discuss in this thread.

Dates. Right now, I'm looking at sometime in February or March 2014. CGDR is happening in March, as well, so we'd want to make sure we were on a different weekend.
Name. A bad marathon needs an equally bad name.
Charity. Do we want a charity? Does any charity want us? I'd like suggestions.
Technical issues. Some recent online marathons have been great. There are some things I like and some I don't. I'd like to get more into depth with what people feel is best. I'm planning this to be online, but if there's a huge movement to make it in-person, we could change it.
Game submissions. Send in generally bad or obscure games. Think: if it either fits AwfulGDQ or gets cut on the first round, I'm happy to consider it here. As long as you can personally stream it, you can submit. Go ahead and give this information.
1. Game title.
2. Run time estimate.
3. Description of the game. Hype it up! Talk about glitches, notoriety! If it's Superman 64, let me know that there's more to the fame than just flying through rings (and yes, that game's not too horrible for this marathon. I think).
4. A video of a run, if you have one. If not, try to get some video from YouTube so I know what it's like.

That covers everything that I'm thinking of. Feel free to bring up more issues, especially if they'll help with the early planning. We have a little over half a year, and I'm thrilled.

Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (N64/PC): 2:30:00 (likely to be brought down to 2:15)

Turok 2 is a first person shooter published by Acclaim in 1998 as a sequel to Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. Personally I believe it is among the best N64 games so it's not particularly fitting, but I also know a ton of people criticized how awfully it plays on the N64, which is very true: the N64 cannot handle it and the controls are extremely unresponsive. The input lag is 8 to 10 frames. Frames per second usually about 10, sometimes 3 or 4. People have also criticized how long and confusing certain levels are. I am playing the PC port that was massively overlooked but is actually a lot better, since it fixes every problem the N64 had, besides the confusing levels. There are a few skips, notably the "Blue feather skip" and what's called "Primagen key early" that can be done for the Primagen keys 2 and 5. The game got cut in AGDQ because it's not good enough as an FPS (FPS games need to be godlike to be AGDQ-worthy).

I don't have a video of a full run yet but I can give you this.
No pain, no gain
Ah, yes. I've played some Turok back in the day. I believe I played the original more than the second, mostly because of the issues you brought up. I'd also agree that it's probably more of a good game, but what can you say? It was cut from AGDQ, but it may be worth having here. I'll definitely consider it.
Terraffirmative!
OH BABY. Forgive me if I get carried away here, but you can take your pick of what I list here.

Ikari 3 - 25 min(?, lost my splits for this and don't have a highlight ATM) - Jump kicks everywhere and lag city. Ikari NES games are pretty well known for not being good games, and while the 3rd is the most passable, it still lags an incredible amount during a lot of sections.

Wurm: Journey to the Center of the Earth - 35 min - 4 game types in one, none of which is well designed. Super cliche anime girl with almost no animation stars the show, and bad game design plus confusing anime stories can only lead to 'good' things.

Musya: The Classic Japanese Tale of Horror - 25 min - Slow walking samurai, a nonsensical story, and really poorly thought through invulnerability times. Plus its the game I got from the bad game exchange, so....

Bad Dudes - 20 min - Horrible NES voice acting and really blocky animations. I did this at AGDQ2013 and it went over pretty fantastically.

Two Crude Dudes - 30 min - Really silly animations and poorly thought through invulnerability times again. Also AUGH sound effect over and over. Currently a possible game for AGDQ2014 awful games.

Heavy Barrel - 25 min - Slow paced gameplay, bosses that are destroyed instantly by single attacks, and more great NES voice acting. Sets up for a data east block with the previous two.

KaGeKi - 20 min - Yea, its pretty bad.

I have more stuff, but I feel like I'm already being excessive.

Just chiming in to say that timing on this is pretty critical.  Marathon overload is pretty obvious, so if you're actually trying to raise money, good luck.  There's already a big lack of hype for current marathons, so one with games most people can't stand or haven't heard of will struggle right now.

If this is just a fun marathon, sounds like a great idea!  I'll consider it.  ^_^
Professional Shaq Fu Speedrunner
Assuming this stays an online marathon, I would be interested in offering this beautiful specimen of a game:

http://www.twitch.tv/jackinthebox333

Shaq Fu (SNES) Story Mode (Easy) [Estimate: 15:00]

Shaq Fu is known as one of the worst fighting games ever produced. With poor hit detection, horrible controls and a steep difficulty curve even on the easiest difficulty settings, Shaq Fu is not only a bad game, but one many people have not even beaten. Story mode consists of a Pepsi sponsored story mode where you are tasked by a Mr. Miyagi rip off to rescue a young boy from a menagerie of six Hollywood monster movie ripoffs.

Only problem is that the only way I could stream this is via emulator, because my setup has my PC and my TV on opposite sides of the room. So if streaming emulator isn't a problem, I would be more than happy to offer this.

I currently have the fastest known time of 9:20 which can be seen here:

Castlevania Adventure [Estimate: 25:00] CV Adventure is probably THE WORST possible Castlevania game in existence. A frame rate of like 3 frames a second (don't quote me on that, I don't know what it actually is lol), slow gameplay, unfair enemies with fast, undodgable projectiles, an unforgiving hitbox, and a looooong autoscroller...

I have the record for this game (due to being the only one on the planet other than Romscout who tried to run this game). It's up on SDA.

1. "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial"

2. 1:30

3. After a fairly successful movie of the same name, which gathered over 780 million dollars to Universal Pictures, Atari Inc. decided that it would be a fantastical idea to create a game of the same name. But because Atari we this naive, they also thought that they can create a commercially successful game in only 5 and a half weeks only with a team of one person.  The objective of the game is to guide the eponymous character through various screens to collect three pieces of an interplanetary telephone that will allow him to contact his home planet... I think(it's really hard to understand what the fuck is going on in this game). So, you walk around obstacles and jump around. How exiting. Fortunately, this game can be ran in 1 minute, so it won't make your eyes and ears bleed.

Yeah, this is something I'm concerned about. For example, there's a charity marathon Love Without Boundaries happening right now that most people don't know about, and it's unlikely to raise much because of that. I'm completely okay leaving the money for the 'GDQs and others. We really don't have marathons just for fun anymore around here, and I'm fine with just enjoying our time.

With that said, I'd love to have you, PJ.

Murph, you... gave me a nice list. I'll check everything out in a while.

I've never heard of Castlevania Adventure. Thank you for introducing it into my life. Added for now.

ET's legendary. I think I'd feel wrong if this didn't make it.

Tunnel Rats - 45 minutes - An FPS based on an Uwe Boll movie. Somewhat broken:
The Speedrunning Teacher
I may have a game or two that I could suggest, but I need to go look at them once more. Expect another post from me later.

I kinda feel like this marathon should just be for fun. If someone wants to donate, the money could go towards the purchasing of grand prizes for the -GDQs, for example. We wouldn't advertise it. We'd just have some fun.
Oh god, do I dare offer Gumby vs The Astrobots? Or even really go through with trying to learn it for real? The only problem is it would have to be an emulator run since I have no way of streaming from GBA/DS and no money to correct that.

http://www.twitch.tv/eggmanimn/c/2448241 - Here's a video of my first playthrough of it, which is an hour long so obviously any run of it would be a lot faster.

It's about time someone got back at Uwe Boll by making a bad game from his movie.  Refreshing change from his horrible movies based on good games.

Magical. Flying. Bathtub
I'll join in if it's a marathon for fun - I agree with what was said previously about marathon overload to raise money.  I'll have a think about how many of my games are really bad or obscure enough but I have two definite contenders from the under-represented Amiga:

1) Great Giana Sisters.  Cruelly rejected TWICE from AGDQ, the Amiga game is an upscaled version of the 1987 C64 Mario "ripoff" that got Nintendo's panties in such a twist that it was quietly withdrawn from the shelves, thereby securing its place as a cult classic that eventually got a sequel over 2 decades later for the DS when everybody realised that Nintendo didn't copyright side-scrolling platformers Tongue

The plot (and there is a plot, just check the manual) is that Giana is trapped in a dream world and must find the giant crystal in order to wake up.  It's a strange and confusing place and gravity is low so you can jump really high (a plot hole NOT addressed by any of the Mario games thus far...).  Also you don't have to go it alone, because Giana's sister Maria can dream too (wait, what?).  Featuring Live Action Movie Yoshi as several bosses, three uses of a glitch I discovered called warp-deathing and an optional glitched ending which takes like 20 seconds longer.

Run estimate inc. set up is 15 minutes.

2) Harlequin. Obscure and yet wonderful 8-way scrolling platformer that really shows off what the Amiga can do.  You play as the Harlequin, a grown up version of a child who created and lived in Chimerica, a world of imagination shaped around his experiences, fantasies and life.  Chimerica was powered by its heart, fueled by love from Harlequin.  As Harlequin grew up and left, Chimerica was left alone, monsters came in and eventually Chimerica's heart broke. Now Harlequin has returned to his homeworld, Chimerica, to mend its broken heart by finding the four heart pieces.

It's a puzzle platformer at its core, flip a switch in one level to remove a barrier in another and allow yourself to progress, etc.  It has great music, appalling sound effects (however you choose whether you get SFX or Music) and a few dark undertones to it - when you consider some of the creepier levels later in the game and remember that these were created by the psyche of a child!

I fully intend to speedrun the whole game (atm the estimate is 1:30:00) and for Feb/March I'm prepared to offer this, although currently I only do the glitched ending, which can be done in under 3 minutes.  It features all the prime elements of speedrunning; namely precise platforming, boost jumping, shooting hearts at things, slope mechanics, deathwarping, space hoppers, menu skipping, an autoscroller, out of bounds and wrongwarping to the good ending (while surrounded by a whole bunch of other warps many of which can crash the game)

There is always a way.
-Rockman EXE WS
-Estimate: 30:00
-A spin-off of the Megaman Battle Network (Rockman.EXE) that was released on a Japan exclusive handheld called the Wonder Swan. The game contains no major glitches (a least none I'm currently aware of) but is only mostly playable. It contains split paths, some of which lead to stages I have never been able to complete.
The WonderSwan emulator I use has a function mapped to F2 that rotates the screen 180 degrees, flipping it upside down and effectively inverting left and right. I could also offer to run it like this as a donation incentive if you end up raising money for a charity.

The above video is slightly out of date, but is a good representation of the run.

This is a good question. SDA doesn't accept emulator runs, but I don't think I'd have a problem with it myself. I mean, if someone wants to run through the whole game of Cheetamen 2, it's not even possible on console. As long as you're not doing emulator-specific tricks, I'd be fine with it, but it'd be good to hear others' opinions about it.

I'll go through the rest of the games today or tomorrow. It looks like we're getting some good offerings.

Just want to chime in to say it IS possible to play all of Cheetahmen II on console.  You have to play through the first 4 stages, reset, and then hope it takes you to level 5.  Not joking, btw.
OK, I guess I do have a bad game I run...

James Bond 007 (Game Boy)

~ 1 hour as an estimate

It's not that glitchy, but it's essentially Legend of Zelda...but it's Bond. It's stupid, wacky and insane. It's essentially a hodge-podge of most of the Bonds pre-Goldeneye...it's just silly.

http://www.twitch.tv/softman25/c/1939742 - My current PB is actually 50:xx but for some reason the twitch highlight is screwed. There are also new strategies which could bring the time down more...but there's a decent chunk of RNG segments which pretty much make me not want to actually play for PBs. Great for fun runs though! Cheesy
SGL Scrublord
Bad Games eh? I have a game that is percieved to be bad (CV2, 50 minutes marathon route, Simon walks around, trades human remians for black market stakes and reassembles a vampire using fire), but I'll also dig through my collection and try to find a gem (or turd) I can learn for this.
SEGA Junkie
I might regret this, but I'm just going to go ahead and say that this will give me a reason to play Awesome Possum...
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Oh jeez, this is too good to resist. Or too bad to resist? So maybe I should see if I can beat Sentient...

...Nahhhhhhh that game can be left unbeaten.

Waiting hurts my soul...
When did you pick up Sentient? I was thinking of running that eventually, but really want to beat it on my own (haven't had the time or will to sit down and map it out).

I'd like to sign up. My streaming setup is much improved since JRDQ. I'd like to run Mysterium (GB). Never heard of it? There's a reason for that. I'll get a time estimate soon, but it should be no longer than 20 minutes.

And to the obscure game possibility, I suggest a "Hidden Gems" block.
Talk to the Hand
Awww shit, Mysterium! Remember seeing that one in Nintendo Power back in the day. Never played it myself though.

RE: Marathon: I'm of the opinion that there's no such thing as too many charity marathons, but I seem to be in the minority. That said, I don't see the harm in having a link to some charity below the gameplay window. You don't have to push it or anything like that, but just put it there and see if people discover it for themselves, and if so, great! If not, no harm done.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Zenic: Usunoro gave me Sentient because it was too awful for him to play.

Emptyeye: I don't think there are too many as long as if they start small or don't do it for charity. I think a problem with a lot of the marathons that are starting is that they are trying too aim too high. That being said, I can't keep track of all of the marathons anymore.
Totally rad
I'm tempted to suggest Heavy Nova, but that's an actual good game.
