Sooo I was looking through all the completed games (not including TAS) and I saw no one had actually gotten a time for this yet so I decided to give it a go after reading through what everyone had said in the previous thread there was about this game. It took a little getting used to again but I got through the game in under 3 hours (not 100% of course, just tower clear) and I can do it pretty consistently.

Anyways I guess the reason Im posting is because I dont have a recording set up. Can anyone suggest good cheap ones that have a somewhat decent quality?
Thread title:
Waiting hurts my soul...
You should look at the knowledge base or post/search in the Tech Support board. Also, I suggest using the old thread, as stated in the posting guidelines. Ryuken was hanging around as of a few months ago, so you might give messaging him a shot to see how far along he got and if there's anything more to be said. He'd probably be the best person to ask about how good that time is.
Yeah I read through the "recommended" set up, and I really did not like it. A couple friends of mine have recommended using something like Dazzle capture card though, so Ill probably go with that for recording/live streaming.

I tried messaging Ryuken a couple days ago and he hasnt answered so I dont really know what to do as for a good time :S
I'm just trying to impress you.
If you stream the routing/attempts I'll watch. This game interests me...
Ill be sure to let you know when I do my first stream Tongue

Hey sorry I didnt end up getting back to you Zack, havent been on the forums for over six months now. To get to your question on if your 3 hours is a good time or not though:

For just a standard casual run that time is incredible. But for a speedrun I'd have to say it would end up being uonacceptable, my estimation is that if it took 3 hours you are looking at about 2-3 total trips into the tower. When I attempted to run this game I came to the realization that for this to be an accepted game it would have to be a one trip go. In my initial couple trials I believe my average time ended up being right around 0:30 hitting floor 25. And with the final 15 floors being 99% running like hell to find the exit I don't think a run of over an hour would be acceptable.

I am intrigued at the setup you are using since you say you can get these results consistently, I only end up making it past floor 25 about one in every 8 attempts and I wont even go into how rarely I make it to floor 40.

With this being one of my all time favorite games I would love to share ideas and strategies on how to get this game annihilated as quickly as possible, I'm definitely going to be around the forums a lot more often now so feel free to either PM me or we can discuss on here as well

Just did a run on an emulator with save states just to see a fairly lucky floor 40 run, no elevator luck manipulation just saved at the beginning of every floor and reloaded on that floor if I died. Final time: 0:38:11. Since I would most likely end up being one of the verifiers for this I personally wouldnt accept any run longer than 0:45
This is a very odd game, because it has two destinct game play sections, yet only one of those is needed to beat the game. It seems kinda wierd to watch a run of this (the TAS especially) that just runs through the tower with nothing else.
I'll grant it's been a couple of years since I played, but especially with the post right above I can't fathom the kind of luck one would need to be able to actually make it though in one go...but on the other hand it's a pretty slow process, and one which can't really be planned.
Would love to see a real time run of this myself, though...

I mostly agree with this, if I add up all of my trips I have ever made to the tower it would probably total over 1000 and I can say with absolute certainty that no two trips are the same. However the more you attempt one run floor 40 attempts you begin to develop a lot of strategies for the things you run into the most. I can say that my average floor that I reach has drastically increased since I have been attempting this. Originally my average top floor was  around 10-15. Now my runs usually end around floor 20ish. On an actual console my highest first trip run made it to floor 32 and I will say it took a HUGE amount of luck to do it.

But even though this game can be incredibly frustrating to run due to randomness, thats also the reason I never get tired of running it. I never feel like I'm doing the same things over and over. Doing these runs just reminds me why I love this game, and I think if I can start getting fairly consistent to ~30 I will try some console runs and see how this would look as a single segment run.

Alright so I streamed a couple of attempts for a floor 40 run today. I have to say I was incredibly happy with how well I did. Out of three trips none of them ended before floor 25 and the final one made it the farthest of the three.

If there is anyone out there that is still interested in seeing this run I highly suggest watching this: http://www.twitch.tv/ryuken1315/b/307329676
Waiting hurts my soul...
That was pretty impressive. I'm looking forward still for a completed run.

Just did another run, floor 36 this time. Getting very consistent. Looking like a floor 40 run would be very possible

It's official! My first ever successful first trip floor 40 attempt! Got it this morning and it clocked in at 54:50 real time and 52:09 game time. Surprisingly enough this was one of my worst runs in regards to the luck I got.

Floors 11-20 were just terribly bad luck wise, my 21-30 didnt have near the elevator luck my other attempt did but in the final 10 floors I was able to find some magic balls I needed and coupled with some nice maneuvering and a fantastically timed star glass we have a completed run!

If anyone is interested here is the video: http://www.twitch.tv/ryuken1315/b/307397135
Wow, inmpressive. I'll have to watch it in the next couple days.
Waiting hurts my soul...
this is neat, looks like you're in a good position to get a run out.
Ok watched it. Interesting what you have to do to survive, etc.

It's been a while since I played this, but I'm kinda thinking -- what about a 'full' game? That is, I guess, get all the girls faces as well as complete expansion. I forget how it works....is it that you have to get to floor X, leave, trigger the scene, then go back and retrieve Y (say the herb for the sick girl) before another thing can happen, or would a run up to, say, 30 initially trigger everything? Or maybe you have to enter a second time, etc?
I just find it so ODD that a 'speed run' of this game completely ignores half of the game play.
Waiting hurts my soul...
That half of the game can be considered side quests, since they don't prevent you from completing the main quest (get to floor 40). 100% would be insane to plan and run I think. If anyone tries, it'll probably have to be segmented.

So in the spirit of me leaving this game for months/years at a time and then Necroposting here is yet another one!

Just moved back to OK recently for school and spent the last few weeks doing about 40ish runs for this game any% and I can say I now have a new record!

Three nights ago I got a 41:23!!!!! A crazy improvement over my first time of 54:50 and over a minute faster over my more recent time. The craziest part is at one point I was OVER FIVE MINUTES BEHIND,
it took an absolute GOD level of luck on the last 15 floors but I have the run I am by far the happiest with so far. I dont plan on stopping until I get sub-40 honestly but this was a huge relief to finally get an improved time. Its even weirder that after 140 attempts I have only had three make it to floor 40 and those three have each been new PB's.

For anyone interested here is the run: http://www.twitch.tv/ryuken1315/v/19948639
