It's a bit more slow-paced than other Assassin's Creeds, due to the sailing mainly, but a speedrun of it could still be pretty interesting.

Some general time saving tactics or ideas that come to mind:
- some animations can be interrupted by throwing coins. A time saving example is skipping the flag destroying animation of an enemy ship. You can also do very quick corner assassinations by interrupting the assassination motion with coins.
- in diving sections, you are instantly sent back to where you start if you get killed or reload. Could come in handy (at least in 100% run).
- speaking of which, death and save warping will probably be really useful to skip long bouts of sailing and other navigation during the game.
- after having destroyed a fortress, if you're close enough to the fortress, you can start landing Jackdaw during the victory cutscene, making a little better use of the time you have to wait.
- the cutscene after upgrading Jackdaw can be skipped by quitting Animus. Could be useful to know for a segmented run.
- in Sequence 6 Memory 03 (I think), there's a chasing sequence at the end. That can be skipped by quickly shooting the guy before he sprints away.

Present day:
- if you block a character's path for about 25 seconds, he or she will instantly teleport to the next place. I guess this could save time if in some instance the character's normal route was slower than this.
- I think you can save time when meeting with Olivier by strategically getting in his way while he is on the phone. This way you can slowly move him towards balcony (the next location) instead of having him walk to and fro.

Questions:
- wonder if, or how much, you have to grind in a speedrun to upgrade Jackdaw? There are some semi-difficult naval battles that are a part of the main storyline.
- how to spend your precious coin?
- where's superswimming when you need it?

Didn't know about the anim skip, pretty cool. As far as grinding goes, it may be possible to finish the entire game with an unupgraded jackdaw. You can just sail past a fort without having to defeat it to get where you're going, and if you're good, you can destroy ships fairly quickly with multiple broadside/swivel salvos. If you have leftover money (since all you'll need it for is buying ammo I think), you could spend it on upgrading the jackdaw, but the big thing is resources you need for upgrading. Might be worth it to do a quick plantation raid if it's necessary. Here's one:

The checkpoints also are a bit wonky. In the last memory of sequence 2 (getting the jackdaw), if you hit a checkpoint somewhere on the fleet (when freeing the prisoners), and you restart the memory via the menu, then once you get back up to the decks, reloading the last checkpoint will put you on the location of the checkpoint you hit before restarting the memory. I doubt this is going to be useful in a run, but it's worth knowing.

It appears there is also a pretty quick way to do money by quick travelling repeatedly to a jungle area where there's some valuable wildlife nearby. The animals respawn each time you quick travel, so you can kill them over and over again for cash. (some videos on Youtube show this)

It seems that your ship can't be easily used as a higher platform for jumps. Once you stop it near a wall, it quickly starts drifting away, and all your jumps are destined to land in water.

EDIT:

The game handles checkpoints differently if you're outside boat in the sea. Typically you can warp larger distances that way and reach inside a given island without having to actually sail and land there, saving time.

If you get out and swim to a shoreline, it looks like the game thinks you are on land, and fetches the next land checkpoint, which can even be quite far away... for example, quick travel to Havana. Swim to the closest shore, then save warp. You should end up on Matanzas and open up its quick travel, even if you had never visited that place before. In comparison if you do the same save warp on boat, you just return to the Havana quick travel point.

An example video of getting to New Bone very easily using this save warp exploit.

Regardless, it's looking optimistic as far as skipping large parts of sailing goes.
hello SDA:
Last night i completed a speedrun off AC IV Black Flag. My official time was 9:56:23. My route isn't optimized but i would love to see more people run this game. Also if anyone know what the current WR is (if there is one) that would be great. Thanks,
Fish Food

Here is the page for the run

Hello again!!

Today I beat my PB by about 40 minutes. If there are any sites that list a time better than 9:16:23 please let me know. I am excited to see this game become a speedrun by more people!!

It's been too long since I last played or thought about Assassin's Creed IV, but it's nice to see someone has started running it.

I'm not aware of other time savers than what I linked above, like skipping sailing using save warping exploit. Maybe The Hidden Blade-guys have some new tricks, I couldn't say. Anyway, hopefully new improvements will be found.
i havent found a use for the save warp exploit, there isn't a place where it comes into play, but it is still cool. but there are a few places where focusing on the main ship (specifically in the intro mission and the mission where you sink the Royal Fortune) and sink only it saves time. i also havent timed it, but i think killing 2 crocodiles to craft a 3rd pistol in the siege of charlestowne mission saves a little time when fighting el tiburon (since pistols are the only weapon that damages him). in my route i also killed 2 pigs to craft a bullet bag saves time finding bullets for the same reason. also if you get good RNG you can get a random chest which helps upgrade the jackdaw

hope people run this game other than me lol. i think an optimal time would be 8 or so hours

More stuff about that memory here. Also this guy's YouTube channel. He's got a shortcut for the Hornigold assassination somewhere, but I can't find it. He's got a lot of good ideas. Finally, an obligatory plug for http://thehiddenblade.com/ lot of cool things to be found, though our AC4 category isn't very big yet.
Wow. that will save a lot of time. no more hunting pigs or crocodiles. thank you for finding this. im going to do my homework. btw i am planning on doing another run of AC4 on  saturday (roughly around 1 CST) if you would like to watch visit my stream twitch.tv/bottomofthematt

Kudos to you and the guy who found this
BTW i found the hornigold shortcut

Interesting... how are you guys practising ? I'm guessing you're using save files to practise certain areas? I can't imagine being able to optimize this game by running 9 hours over and over
honestly i havent practiced much. i keep forgetting to keep open a save with all the missions already beat lol. but i plan to do that in the future
MATHEMATICS
You can practice ILs easily, and usually travelling between missions isn't that interesting so it's just a matter remembering the route.

Was thinking of picking up this game but didn't because I heard the PC port wasn't great and I felt like the draw distance might be a bit sucky on PS4 but since this looks a pretty fun speedrun I might try it soon since you say practising ILs is 'easy'.
MATHEMATICS
If you've finished the game you can replay any level from the progress tracker menu.
Mathematics,
I am aware that you can replay missions. What i meant was after i finish a speed run i usually delete the save file so i have memory room on my console. if you dont have a save file that has beat the game you cant replay the mission. sorry if i confused you.

He was answering me I think but if what he says is true then you need to keep atleast 1 save file that's complete... otherwise good luck optimizing in 9 hour bursts :p

If you need to delete a 1 mb savefile to clear up memory for your console, you are bad at memory management. Tongue

I download onlt of my games directly of PSN. so memory tends to be kind of important
