I've watched his reviews. By far my favorite. I recommend giving him a try in spite of any prejudices against youtube reviewers in a sea of mediocrity.

And I wouldn't really call AVGN a reviewer, he just chooses crap games on purpose and rips the piss out of them.

OK, my thoughts...

Not a fan of this guy, Rob is so much better at mock stupidity it isn't even funny.

I like a couple things AVGN did, mainly the Bible games vid, and that's about it. I actually didn't know King of Kings even existed before watching that, and I've been a bad game connoisseur for years.

The lack of SpoonyOne on this thread disappoints me. Watch Samurai Zombie Nation & Final Fantasy 8 and tell me he doesn't blow away the rest of Youtube.

And so happy to see someone mention Yahtzee - that man is AWESOME, and he has a bunch more goodness on some non-Youtube site I forget right now. Worth looking up, for sure!

everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music

This guy is absolutely terrible, here is his MO (it's pretty obvious if you think about it for 5 secs):

1) Pretend to be stupid, make ignorant reviews of many, many games.
2) Because of his popularity, his reviews will show up at the top of many youtube searches.
3) Fans of a game who search for their beloved game (not necessary to see reviews) get his review. They are horrified that some moron has given their game a 1/10.
4) Said fan writes an impassioned defense in the comments.
5) Everyone points and laughs.

This would almost be defensible (if you are the kind of person who thinks something awful is a great site) if this guy were in any way funny, but he's not. So basically he's just a giant douche. His taste in games actually isn't bad (read that as: he likes games that he feels he ought to like, just like everyone else on the internet likes to do), but this whole thing is still really lame.

On a non philosophical note, I don't like this guy's voice, delivery, or basically anything about him. He seems like he'd be a nice enough guy in real life though, judging by how he treats his fans when out of persona. I'm not a fan of his persona though, which is what this thread is about.

But seriously, regarding your argument: I would have to disagree with your opinion of his MO. While I have not watched every single one of his videos, my memory is telling me that there is no indication he is picking games beloved by gamers who will search for said games on youtube. If I remember correctly, the least obscure game he has reviewed is tales of phantasia, in japanese if memory serves me right. In fact, a recurring theme of his seems to be reviewing (J) roms without a translation patch, something that would be unlikely to be a cornerstone of your idea of his MO. Moreover, for some deductive evidence, look at most current reviews: he just picked amiga games from the end of the alphabet. If his MO was as you indicated, then isn't he picking the worst possible games? Not that this is absolute proof against your argument, but rather that your absolute conclusion has not met its burden of proof.

Moreover, even if this were his MO, wouldn't one chide him for choosing an ineffective one rather than an immoral or amoral one? By this, I mean who takes youtube reviewers seriously? I must admit anecdotal evidence contained within kolibir's own videos would show the answer to my question is "some." Perhaps a better question would be why would anyone take youtube reviewers seriously? AVGN, jedite, armake21, and the grumpy gamer bitch have all made it clear their "reviews" are for entertainment purposes and not meant as true reviews. In fact, I just watched that particular review, and... what? That's it? I'm completely unimpressed. He didn't even try to find the bad parts, he just booted up the game for two minutes and did crap. :/

First I want to say, I've never seen AVGN, I've never even heard of another reviewer that people know of, and all I did with this guy is one time (because of this thread) I clicked on his youtube page and listened to maybe 3-4 of his reviews. And I want to say, you're taking this a lot more seriously than I am. Please, there's a reason I was never interested in debate team.

I never said he was picking out specific games; it's pretty obvious he just went backwards alphabetically through all snes games. He got bored of that (it's a lot of games after all) and is doing the same thing for amiga maybe.

About game choice, I think you're way wrong on this. You can use Zelda: LTTP and Ys 3 as examples. First off, you wouldn't want a popular game because it's harder (and gutsier) to make fun of the majority. Also you would get a lot of annoying spam, and comments like "you suck" instead of long, wapanese essays that are easy to make a one-line quip to, as you would for a Japanese-language cult classic. These people take their anime and games seriously, and would probably get angry at the "ignorance" of this dude. And at any rate, you wouldn't even make the top of the searches for something like Zelda, whereas he actually does for most of the games he reviews.

Actually, he did do a review of y's 3. While I do agree that choosing extremely popular games would have the effect you described, the issue at hand is whether comments on his videos taking him seriously are a consequence of his choices or a result of his planning (your opinion of his MO). Just as using extremely popular games to review would back-fire because of their popularity, wouldn't unpopular games, in turn, back-fire by their popularity? It's like the laffer curve, only in video games. That is, there is a maximum positive yield point based on the interacting factors of the chance of video being searched and the chance of video being at the top of a search. If he would want to increase his positive yield even marginally based on your perception of his MO, would his game picking not be non-random (or at least not non-nonsensical).

If my post sounded emotionally charged, it was only because that's how I read yours. Even if you dislike his style, which from a subjective standpoint I can understand, I found "giant douche" to be a little bit of a stretch. Also, you said you don't like anything about him, which I would assume to include his moral character, which is where the morality element of my argument comes in.

Where did I say (or imply) that? I was simply saying if people take him seriously, it is a result of their ignorance, not some trap kolibiri set up. But just because they are ignorant of the youtube reviewer status quo (whatever that is), that doesn't mean they deserve to be mocked. While I have not read every one of kolibir's comments for obvious reasons, I do not seem to recall him personally ever mocking people. I have seen other users mock other users in his videos. My argument, then, is that kolibiri is not responsible if his video causes someone to be mocked by one his subscribers simply because he created such as situation where the possibility exists.

Ok, no hard feelings all around then?

Just a couple things though.

1) I think we're both saying he's not planning out what games he picks? I used the term MO, but I just meant that colloquially obviously. Like a fat kid's MO is to eat pizza. I said this guy's MO is to trap morons (if you look at the comments he catches a lot), but I'm not saying he devised some sinister plan and now he is implementing it.

2) Well I called him a douche, but I call people all sorts of names, including friends. (It's just what people I know do, think South Park if you want. It's hard to tell from written text how serious people are, and you probably took my first post too seriously.) I might not like anything about him, but I don't have a problem with him, and I already said in the first post I bet he's a nice guy IRL.

3) Every single video I clicked on (admittedly, not much), he mocked every single person who complained about his reviews. I'm the first person to say "just grow a thicker skin" so it's not a big issue to me, but it's true.

1) I think we're both saying he's not planning out what games he picks? I used the term MO, but I just meant that colloquially obviously. Like a fat kid's MO is to eat pizza. I said this guy's MO is to trap morons (if you look at the comments he catches a lot), but I'm not saying he devised some sinister plan and now he is implementing it.

2) Well I called him a douche, but I call people all sorts of names, including friends. (It's just what people I know do, think South Park if you want. It's hard to tell from written text how serious people are, and you probably took my first post too seriously.) I might not like anything about him, but I don't have a problem with him, and I already said in the first post I bet he's a nice guy IRL.

3) Every single video I clicked on (admittedly, not much), he mocked every single person who complained about his reviews. I'm the first person to say "just grow a thicker skin" so it's not a big issue to me, but it's true.

2) Yeah, I probably did take your post too seriously; I tend to overreact to "strong" language even though I swear (sometimes profusely) myself.

3) I was going on memory of watching his videos, which, with the exception of amiga ones, was at least 6 months ago. Tongue
