THIS RUN CONTAINS SECRET WORLDS
http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-s978/money

According to this page, Sony Pictures Entertainment is listed among the bill's supporters. This may mean that videos/streams of first-party Playstation games might get pulled if this law goes into effect and is enforced to its fullest extent (which ExplodingCabbage suggested it might not be). I have chosen to not concern myself about it in part because of my extreme pessimism about Congress in general (there's probably nothing anyone can do to stop this bill from being passed or amended as some of the world's biggest media empires are in the pockets of the bill's supporters), and in part because I don't like heeding calls for political action unless I know exactly what I'm doing (the role of praxis as justification for intellectual discussion is a treacherous one).

You make it sound like our government is corrupt.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not.

Sony Pictures Entertainment does movies/TV. It's separate from Sony's PlayStation branch (Sony Computer Entertainment).

You still have to prove what you were doing falls under Fair Use, though, and any publisher who gives enough of a shit to even bother with this is going to have a better legal team than you. Also more money which probably matters more.

Of course this all depends on publishers caring about streams enough to go after people in the first place, and I really don't see them suddenly caring because of this.

So just make sure you don't stream games made by rock star, got it.

If this gets passed, I'm buying GTA San Andreas off Games on Demand and streaming it.

To be fair, they don't seem to be changing too much of what's already established, sounds like they're stiffening penalties and making sure streams are covered more clearly that they were previously. Probably should have been done years ago honestly.  I'm no legalese expert though, and I'm sure it's language will leave plenty of room for abuse and terrible things because we gotta appease those corporations.

People will still stream shit they shouldn't, if it should pass, some people might get busted for it but people have been hammered by the RIAA and they still pirate the fuck out of music so....

But in response to your question, U.S. Congressmen propose worse things all the time! :v

I think this is going to primarily impact TASers. Most companies aren't going to go after streamers, but I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to go after the TASers, given Nintendo's stance on ROMs and Emulation.

Wouldn't they have already gone after them though?
video game companies probably want people to stream video games. it's the new form of word of mouth.
#speedrunslive to race games!!!
Why would they be able to go after TAS'ers any more than they already do? as long as they dont put videos of the stuff online, they can still host the movie files to watch locally (theoretically of course).

TASvideos.org provides youtube and bittorrent links for all published runs. They distribute the video.

Intruding N313 and F014
But TASVideos does not stream the videos.  The bill doesn't change how things currently are.
guffaw
Wait, what's this? A rule change you can't do anything about that might invalidate all your previous work?

How terrible!
.
I have to admit I giggled a little. :<
