Death from above.
Hello all,

I just tried Anodyne today, and I really enjoyed playing it. It's a short zelda like.
I thought it could be fun to run it. The game isn't very hard, once you know how to do each dungeon and where the cards are, you're good to rush through the game.  Also, running it with no death, and the less checkpoint used.

Plus, the game has some glitches, a lot are found when you're jumping while taking doors, and can bring you in some unreachable parts, I didn't manage to get a useful glitch yet, but there is still hope =)

Feel free to share if you find anything Smiley
Thread title:
Hi, dev here. I think it would be cool to see a speed run Smiley especially with the few glitches I know could be exploited...low % or 100% runs would be interesting.
Death from above.
Wow, nice to have you here =)
So far I've been trying to get past the last locked door without the cards, with what I've began to call the "leap of faith", because of the void in which I fall everytime I try to reach the last levels. I think it might be crossable, but it would require a lot of life.

Also I tried to go out of the map and find my way to the top, I have to investigate that further.

Little video of some failed attempts ^^ :

Death from above.
Alright, I just managed to go through it, my main problem when I was trying to get to the other side is the void, and I couldn't use the "bugged" zones to cross because those 5 zones "columns" repeat themselves so I'll always have to cross the void. I tried to go under, to see it it loops and I could arrive up, didn't work either.

BUT I did it ! In fact using that horizontal loop that got me stuck, I used it to arrive at the same room where we start, but the bugged one, and there is no door there, so I just crossed the bridge, no boss fight, arrived on the other side and scrolled back to non bugged rooms. Here is the video :

Although, here I don't even beat the final boss, so it's not very interesting, but after I get to use the swap and that simplifies every dungeon, I can just go directly to cards and get the 100%, and eventually come back to finish the boss the good way.

Might be fun to do any% with the boss fight though, so there is more than first dungeon and jumps. I think I will still try to do a little run with that same glitch to see how fast I go from creation to credits (in my current game I explored a lot,  did a useless dungeon, and got 5 useless cards, so the time isn't good).

Here's an any% with boss fight:

and my quick and dirty route plan, if that's interesting at all: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12512550/games/anodyne-notes.txt

Planning on running this game. I love it so much, it is actually one of the most incredible games I've ever played, for a number of reasons.

However, yeah, it's pretty buggy.. I know a few tricks for the 100% (37 cards) and (as I like to call it) the 200% (49 cards, all secrets) runs which will save some good time.

One prominent example is the use of pushers in early dungeons to glitch through walls and skip puzzles.

Will record some as I find time. Will report back in later. Smiley

edit:

Having learned the any% route quickly, I ran an 11:13.. but the thing is, I hit the final split the moment the credits come up, so you can take off approx 23 seconds if we are going by the moment Young fades away for the last moment.

By my maths, that's about a 10:50. I honestly don't think we can sub-10 at the moment without new tricks, as my run was decent for the most part, with no major mistakes.

Will highlight it when I finish up with streaming this tonight. Going to run it again splitting at the fade-away for the end. Smiley

edit: ran a 10:29.71 using the new timing scheme. pretty chuffed with how the run went too Smiley I think sub 10.20 is getting near-perfect, including optimal strategy for the boss fight.

Final Edit:

My 10.29 run. Smiley

Having re-watched it, I would say a perfect human run would be about 10.10.
Hazdogga, that is an amazing run.  I got this game on steam sale specially to try and run it and you've already broke the living garbage out of it! Good job man that run was super fun to watch!
Avid watcher
Thanks mate Smiley I can't take any credit for breaking it, I just made some slight route adjustments and tried to execute well Smiley

I can save about 9-10 seconds by the boss fight.. the problem is, skipping the Mitra spring-shoe text appears to be some heavily unfavourable RNG, so most times, that 10 seconds is instantly lost.

Hopefully we can find out what triggers the Mitra text to not occur, then we can speed up the run heftily. Smiley
Well I'll be more than happy to look into the text skip the next chance I get.! Smiley Looking forward to learning this one and I'm happy to help in any way possible.  Is there any routing done for 100% or 200% runs?

Saefer does 100% (36 card) runs, he is at about 1 hour 13min I believe.. he has some very solid runs. I hope to take a look at the route and devise my own version if it in the near future.

Edit: Got rid of all the other irrelevant crap.. just ran a 9:48.15, which was near perfect. Had some new route optimisations, so it's looking nice. Just a few seconds' worth of minor mistakes!
Run: http://www.twitch.tv/hazdogga/c/2093602
Yay SDA let me reset my pw finally! I think it was my own fault, but whatever Tongue

I run what I guess would be called "Any% Glitchless" or "36 Cards Glitchless." Like Hazdogga said my pb is 1:13:25~
http://www.twitch.tv/saefer/c/2043611.

There's absolutely room for improvement. I keep underestimating how much time that can actually be saved but I think a couple minutes could be saved by cleaning up my current route and adding one jump I didn't think about until after this run.
Avid watcher
Just about done with any% for now, it's getting crazily hard to beat my new times as I optimise the route and push on.

New run is 9:35.53:
http://www.twitch.tv/hazdogga/c/2094429
The reason I saved a lot of time is because I was almost perfect from start-game through til Temple 1 end (excluding boss fight), saving three seconds. New optimised route from spring-shoes to end-game saved a further 5 or so seconds, and consistent glitch-jumps saved a few more seconds.

There's probably room for 5 seconds improvement with the current route. But every time I say that I find a new route and shave off another 10 seconds, so here's hoping for some more sneaky tricks!
Nice run Haz, very solid! 5 seconds sounds about right but you'd have to go full robot, haha.

I'm probably getting ahead of things, but if anyone wants to chat I'll be in #anodyne on the SRL irc server.

Time to improve my run!

Time for a serious discussion...

what are the parameters of a 36 card run? Simply to collect 36 cards and beat the game?

I ask because the glitched 36-card run will be drastically different to the glitchless.. Can bosses, broom upgrades, etc be skipped? Or is this to be considered a "100%" run, and so they must be beaten and collected etc?
36 Cards is not 100%. 36 is simply the requirement to open the last gate so you can finish the game without glitching. So 36 cards seems like an odd requirement for a run with glitches when that gate can be bypassed using a glitch.

I suppose you could do a 36 cards run using whatever glitches you want EXCEPT the jump glitch or something. "Any% no wall jumping."

The "true" 100% would be all cards, health bits, and secret chests (e.g. missigno) I'd think.

There could be a get all cards possible without using swap, all health bits, and all bosses on one play-through. Which is almost a 100% category. 100% before the credits/reloading/super swap whatever you want to call it :P.
Avid watcher
In my opinion, 100% is this:
37 cards
Broom upgrades
Health upgrades

My reasoning is that the Steam Achievement lists this as 100%.

I argue, therefore, that the run collecting all cards and all secrets should be labelled 200%.
I'm inclined to agree with hazdogga about the % categories.  If the devs give a 100% achievement then it's best to go by that, plus it adds another fun category to route for Smiley

e: for anyone interested in the progression of the 100% glitched run / route, i have done about half of it tonight.

for sixteen cards, five health upgrades and the swap broom, it took around 24minutes, with like 2-3 minutes worth of not caring too much / mistakes and not knowing all the areas well enough.

once i learn my way around the mountains and red sea, and figure out the exact locations of cards and such, i will be able to complete the route..

since i don't know yet know the rest of the game terribly well, it's hard to estimate how long left in the run. My hope is that a sub-45 or sub-40 is possible. I think it will be touch and go, though... (:

I will post videos of the route at a later date, but don't have motivation to do this right now as planning the route is taking priority Tongue

e: just ran the route for the first time (literally reading off my notes to progress) and hit 56.5 minutes fr 100%.. there was possibly up to 10 minutes of mistakes

if anyone is desperate to see it, it's the last broadcast i did on twitch. i won't highlight it though, i'll practise my route and then run something decent and highlight that! (:

Borderlands 2 Glitch Hunter/ router.
Just so you know you can do it without jumping to good effect .... you can use this to skip the broom however the game bricks in the dialog outside the temple however using this i might be able to find a way which skips the temple entirely.

Myself and ProfessorBroman have created a new route which pretty much destroys the any% version of the game I'm sure he will post a video of the discovery soon.
So yeah, capitalizing on the broomless route and new jumpless skips I managed a 6:21.92 with much room to improve.  I'm posting this for so everyone can be aware of the route, the clip starts a few seconds in but it was a bit hard to dial in on the start it was from a long stream Smiley

Working on the new run now, thanks for showing Smiley

edit: Just ran a 5:44.27 with the new route.. (5:58 file time) Smiley time to use it in the glitched 100% as well!

I'll clean up the run and go for like a sub 5:40 another time Smiley

5:41.93

getting close to the sub 5:40, which is basically perfect movement & no missed glitches. *shrug* should be a good challenge to beat Smiley

e: Obsoleted with a 5:39.15
http://www.twitch.tv/hazdogga/c/2115206

Additionally, I just had a huge improvement on my 100% glitched time, clocking in at 45:36.52.. I was really hoping somebody would be able to give feedback on the route, as it seems slower than it should be given how optimised the first segment of the game is now.

Presonally I can't help you on the 100% I've only played the game for about 2 hours total most of which was breaking after finding the new method so I literally have no knowledge of the game lol

Great times btw can't view the videos ATM as I'm at work but will have a look When I get home
Hazdogga! WTG! Those time's are pretty incredible! Also I'll take a look at the 100% time soon Smiley

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement guys Smiley definitely helps motivate me to do a bit better each time.

Speaking of which, here's my latest any% attempt:
http://www.twitch.tv/hazdogga/c/2118045

Final time: 5:36.08

Going to go for sub 5:35.00, but after that, this is getting kind of ridiculous. Any kind of optimisation is hard to achieve on a consistent basis. All the glitches need to follow on from each other smoothly, which is actually quite difficult to do constantly.

e annnnnnnd a 1:20 improvement on my 100% run. Shame, because the execution was quite good but I had some routing issues where I went the wrong way completely! :x (time is 44:16.32)
