Has anyone played Alundra?

I picked up a copy of it the other day and I realised that had beaten it once and I wanted to play through it again. I would have tried Alundra II, but I refuse to play that game since it's so managled up.

But I wondered if anyone had any ideas on certain parts or whatever that I should be aware of. I know my first time playing it was about 6-7 years ago, right when Final Fantasy VII came out for Playstation and I know that the game is really hard in some spots.

So any ideas? ;p

新世紀進歩的羽扇子 音楽
hey, yeah!  i've been told this is basically the successor to landstalker, which i love.  i don't own it yet, but if you start working on this run, i think i'll get it before too long (it's cheap, heh hehehe).
The weirdo all around you.
Now it is, yeah :p I remember back in the day when it was like $59.99.

I never played Landstalker. I'll have to try that at one point when I don't have 20 other RPG games to finish playing, such as Wild Arms: Code Alter F, Valkyrie Profile, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Final Fantasy Tactics, Shining Force and Tales of Phantasia, among other games in my 60 + Playstation and GBA collection *wince*
I pretty liked Alundra 2 when I was a young kid. I would like to see both of them (1 and 2). Go ahead
The weirdo all around you.
Well 2 just didn't appeal to me. I got halfway through and the storyline just didn't seem to stand out, or something. Can't remember what it was now, though. But I'm doing one....I'm up to three hours so far.
Nifty.
2 was fun as a game, but as a sequel, it was disappointing.  Er, that's all I really have to add.  My skills at running Alundra would be subpar.

2 absolutely 100% lacked the charm of the original ...

But 2 was great in its own ways!  Flint!  the big guy would keep yelling, plus I really liked the not-too-polished-seeming minigames.

I thouroughly enjoyed both myself.

If it became popular to speedrun, there might be as much strategy to running Alundra 1 as there is in a Zelda game.

Yes I've played this, but sadly I don't remember this game half as well as I should.

First off, Tom, us meeting again in these threads for certain games is getting funnier each time. Tongue

It's pretty much a consensus that 2 isn't as good as 1. Strangely enough, there are other PS1 RPG series that are the same way: Wild Arms, Suikoden, Parasite Eve, etc.

Landstalker is for Genesis, and there's no real connection other than being an ARPG with puzzles (which admittedly, is enough by itself).

If you tell me which RPGs you have that you like and which games you have that you haven't played yet, I can pretty much give you recommendations from what you have. (Although if you have Alter Code F, this means you have a PS2 as well.)

I have things to say about every game you listed, but to avoid diluting my message: PLEASE play Valkyrie Profile. It's definitely my favorite game of all time; you won't be disappointed, I promise. Also, if you own it and haven't played it, you will make a lot of people who wished they owned it (like spineshark here) very sad. Sad

Suikoden 2 is FAR superior to Suikoden 1. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I was never any good at Alundra... played it for a fair amount of time, but action-RPGs aren't really for me. The only one I've ever completed would be, uh... Kingdom Hearts I guess. Oh god. Sad
I did start on it, but other projects as well as a fear of breaching the 7 hour limit (And seeing how Alundra was a phenominal, though not exactly insanely popular title I dropped it).  I wish you luck though and I'm VERY eager to see how you could pull it off.  I only finished the mines before I got discouraged and focused on DMC3 again.

I think I bought that game last year.  I got up to a dungeon with these Lizards with swords and gave up, I had no idea where to go next in that dungeon.

The game is insanely hard, I remember spending HOURS on this one puzzle using sliding ice pillars years ago.  I finally quit the game by the time I got to some house and I had to find... something.  I couldn't leave or do anything at all.  I'm now going borrow the game so I can finally beat it since I've been in the mood to play it for a long time now.

You know, i have been considering running this game too. Its alot of fun and i love playing it.

Im right now playing it trought to check its speedrun capabilities. And what im most afraid of is the 7 hour limit. I need to play trought the game more times to see if its possibly.

I think the main point is to make a good route, so alot of research and planning must be done.

Do you think it would be acceptable to die on purpose and select the "Quick Restart" (meaning you return to the last saved point) in the speedrun ?

If so, you could get the Legend sword and maybe save some time.

Yes, you may die to warp, it will just be marked as "uses death warps" or whatever. I encourage you to do this if you are afraid of the time limit.

Good, ill try it out.

edit: I wont work as travelling. Since it loads the last saved or loaded game.
But getting the sword early may help out alot.

...yes, umm...didn't we have this discussion sometime back when I was visiting and I wanted to play your Suikoden II, which you didn't have? :p

I remember that! Yes, that was when Kline was transformed into a werewolf and you had to go through his dream. I remember spending 13 hours to figure that SOB out and then I had to look at a walkthrough to actually get out of the dungeon. It's those kind of things that did make me want to give up.

Yeah, you basically had to go through there to umm get some boots. That was it really. But they were needed so you could go in the sand castle or to go swimming. I can't remember which.

And I didn't know there was a limit on how long you're supposed to play the game...I saw the BoF III run and thought 10 hours for an RPG was alright or something if it was difficult or whatever.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
If anyone cares, I thought Suikoden 2 was better than 1, and Parasite Eve 2 wasn't that much worse than the first, but I was going by what I thought was general opinion.

ryvnn, don't worry about the 7 hour "limit." It's more like a guideline, and you can basically ignore it unless you are running some game with a lot of long, annoying cutscenes like Xenogears, that gets into double digits.

Here is the thread about that BoF3 run btw.
ryvnn, How is it going ?

ryvnn wants to let you all know that she's practicing the run; she's had power out a lot of the time, so has been unable to do anything much with it, or get on the net.
Don't worry!
The weirdo all around you.
I finally have had a chance to do some practicing...

Before I get into what I've got, I've been working two jobs. One is volunteer and it's to do with scriptwriting and working a crappy 35 hour job or less a week. So I do that besides going to school full time and get one week off every two classes before going back to those all year round.

Since Thursday, we have had rain, and nothing but rain. Saturday flooded my state and we were on nationwide news. Our road was washed away.

This morning (being Monday), I wake up to the power going out six times before work, the phone line disconnected cause a tree went down and our basement flooded as well as our swimming pool. The swimming pool was about to explode because it's not a liner swimming pool. So, after the third time draining it, we hear that there will be MORE rain all week until Saturday in large amounts.

*takes breath* With that said...

How do you know if you need to skip a scene in the game? So far I have not been able to actually skip anything . . . however, I am wondering if I need to not purchase armor or anything of that nature. Right now, I'm about to go into a dungeon that is required and that will take out half my health bar in one hit. So I'm debating on how to do this since I need time to gain money to purchase the items required for the next dungeon.

Right now, I'm on part 11 of 43 in the practice run and I am 3:06:35 without dying once in it. I'm thinking of trying to die, as someone said, to get the Legend Sword, but I am not sure if I should attempt this yet. I'm not bothering to tape it yet cause the power goes out at random and I don't want to mess up the tape by trying and having my TV explode. We already had one computer blow up today.

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
just because I want to point this out, if you enjoyed Alundra, Dual Hearts is way more along the same lines than Alundra 2 was. I loved all the games the landstalker team has put together but for some reason they are all so insainly hard. >< good luck with this though.
Whoa.. floods and power outs. Thats pain :-/

To get the sword you need to die about 21 times.
And you can only retrieve the sword after you get the power glove.
The sword is really, really good. And the time you save at the bosses/enemies maybe makes up for the dying. I need to check this up properly.

I dont think you can skip any scenes. Only thing i can come up with, is to skip the shoes in the Tarla mountain. I think its possible if i remember correctly.

I need to check Dual Hearts, thanks Smiley
The weirdo all around you.
Which shoes are you talking about? The swimming boots? I think you need those somewhere.

Yeah the flooding is being a pain. Some places in my state have to be evacuated and I may have to be soon if the roads are not driveable soon enough...we've been on constant flood watches and we're now on a coastal one.

21 times with the power glove? I saw 16, but I might have to check that out again.

Thank you all for sharing your tips with me, and for Lag in general, though you didn't really need to help me...you'll watch me run it in the first place when it's done in a few months ^^.

Personally, I am 5:11:26 in the game roughly right now, and I just passed the Ancient Shrine phase. I am happy because this has surpassed my personal goal the first time I played seven years ago.

I'm doing an emulated run alongside to check for silly errors or useful tricks. Here's a shot:

I haven't been relying on emulator features too much. For example, I royally screwed up Bonaire's dream, probably a couple of minutes there. Also my fight with the Guardian was quite bad. Still, considering this is around a quarter of the chapters done, the time limit is well within our grasp here.

I've been picking up any Herbs that are en-route. I've also got a few gilded falcons by accident, but that's only a matter of seconds. Smiley We perhaps need more research to see if any of the prizes for redeeming the falcons are worth the time taken to find the buggers.

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I've got the working designs strategy guide if that helps any lol Wink

Edit: looked up prizes for falcons and most of them are just accessories that increase defence. Best item is a wand that restores MP but i don't think you wanna find all 50 falcons for that. Guide also says it's 16 times for the sword. I also remember just saving and then blowing myself up 16 times with bombs next to the save point when I got it.
