Alien: Isolation is a first person horror game that has a single player campaign, as well as sets of self contained 'Survivor' mode levels that have built in leader boards ranked on time and on points.

Single Player Campaign: As far as I know, there are no actual speed runs of the single player campaign that have been completed as of yet. From some incomplete testing, it looks as though the speed run of the single player campaign will take approximately 4 or 5 hours + to complete, taking into account the possibilities of death and such. The very early game is very easy and straightforward, with little to no chance of being caught by the Alien, and the humans are not dangerous at all. Once the Alien starts to appear, particularly around the infamous Medical chapter, there's a difficult balance to be made between speed and safety, where it can be difficult to get anywhere with any measure of speed while the Alien is nearly on top of you much of the time. Luck with spawns and good intuition as to when it is safe to begin sprinting is necessary. Once you get the flamethrower however, you have a lot more freedom to scare the Alien off while keeping up some measure of speed. At that point, keeping an eye out for flamethrower fuel could be quite important, depending on how much fuel you end up using trying to force the Alien away. Other than that, there are a few key codes that should be memorized, and remembering which computers are needed to progress is important.

Survivor Mode: These are much smaller missions, each one taking around a minute to complete when speed running them. Only one is available for free with the game by default, the other three currently available are part of the Corporate Lockdown DLC. More are slated to come as part of future DLC releases. The small map length allows for a low barrier to entry for competition, though the need to buy DLC for more maps than the base one is a bit annoying. There is a risk of cheaters on the Survivor leaderboards, however the developers recently cleared out the listing of the most egregious cheaters. (Though there are a few still present on the leaderboard for the Basement map - if 43 or 47 second times are possible on that map, I have no idea how.)

On the whole, I have not been able to find any glitches useful for speedruns so far. One possibility is the character Axel, in the early parts of the main campaign, can push Ripley around at full force if the player gets in the way, which may allow for some map clipping. (When I found this out, Axel ran into me and flung me on top of a nearby barrel that I couldn't move off of.) In the survivor maps in particular, it's possible to scare the alien away and into a vent with the flamethrower, and if the player is nearby the alien model, it's possible for the movement of the Alien's limbs and tail to push the player around and give quite a speed boost - provided you don't run right into it afterward losing any time gained.

I think Alien has the potential to be a quite impressive speed run if running the main campaign, though at present it looks to be pretty long, especially with high risk of death. Survivor mode is quite fun as well, and makes for quick and easy runs that are fun to try to improve.

Run examples (Survivor Mode): The Basement, Severance, Scorched Earth, Loose Ends.
Thread title:
I would be interested to see a speedrun of this game. It would be hilarious if there are sections where you can sprint around and dodge the Alien(s). However, a couple of OOB glitches would quicken some sections, although this seems unlikely.
I've only seen a playthrough of this game, so I'm not going to be too much help here. However, I'd say a possible timesaver (as in, potential to end the game extremely early) would be finding a way to somehow get the Ion torch early. Or any upgrade for that matter.
That might not actually save that much time, as the game is deceptively linear. Each "mission" is probably triggered by doing the mission before. Hence, using any early-obtained item to reach, say, the lab where you jettison the first Alien early, will most likely cause you to end up in an empty room with no way to advance the story.

Having played and looking at some attempts of running this there just seems to be no good way to speed it up, the alien ai and the scripting will force a long run unless you find some major skips.

Yeah, all we can hope is that by some odd chance, the developers didn't think about that sort of thing.

And from the looks of things, the only way to do a good speedrun relies on alien luck, and just quick execution of things...which means that there's only so much optimization to be done.

Someone recently posted a very quick time to the survivor mode Loose Ends leaderboard. I assumed they were using a cheat like other similar situations, but I reached out to ask. They let me know that there is apparently a skip somewhere in the level that shaves off ~8 seconds. I'm waiting on a video from them for proof and instructions on how to do it, but if true, then skips in other survivor mode levels or in the main campaign may be possible.

Turns out it shaves off a massive amount of time. It's an elevator skip where you can push the button inside the elevator through a wall. You can find my recording of it here.

Beat the game on Hard Mode yesterday. Dunno if this is explicitly stated, but the Alien will get scared away with the flamethrower with minimal consumption by starting and stopping the attack animation 3 times... Just it at him and click 3 times and he'll go away. It'll only take maybe 12 ammo to do this, and you can just do regular walking everytime afterward to keep him from reappearing.

It seems the trick to NOT get him to tackle you (where he tackles and disappears) is to shoot him from the flamethrower's max range. I had multiple instances where the Alien damage-tackled me right after I pulled the flamethrower because he was too close.

Hey!

I recently went for the No Death trophy on Hard Mode without using save stations (only mission saves) and had a blast so I started thinking about the viability of an actual 1 Life Clear/Speedrun of Hard Mode. After a little bit of practice I came to the conclusion that it was definitely possible so I gave it a shot and got to chapter 14 before I got caught in a bad spot and died.

I didn't have alot of practice in the later stages so I went back and replayed some of the trickier sections and now I feel ready to finally get this done! I feel like this definitely falls into the speedrun category now that I've refined my route and developed some time saving tactics so I thought I would post this here.

Going to be attempting this on Friday November 28th at 9PM EST here http://www.twitch.tv/joefenix/profile.

It's probably going to take around 5ish hours if everything goes well, if not then I'll just keep trying in the following days until I get a good clean run. Chapter 6 can actually be somewhat problematic and there's always a ton of things that can go wrong but I'm feeling pretty good about my chances. Regardless I'll just keep plugging away at it until I finally nail it. Wish the first 2 chapters and chapter 9 weren't so boring to go through on replays, otherwise the game is pretty fun (but long) to run.

Keep in mind though that while I do consider this a speedrun my priority is a no death run so I abort the run if I end up dying. I'll just retry on following days until I get through the whole thing.
When doing routing or when just going through casually, it'd be really great if people could see if they can activate elevators or other progression points through walls/the closed doors since we have that proof of concept on the DLC map. Biggest problem I can imagine with that, though, is if you're able to skip certain areas you might miss necessary equipment upgrades.

Doesn't seem like what you're describing is possible in the story mode after some quick testing, atleast in most cases. Elevators seem to physically come up when you press the call button so you can't access the button through the walls.

This is just a quick test on a couple of different elevators though, more testing is required to see if it can be used during certain sections of the game.

Edit: Run was successful, finishined in 4hours 20mins on the dot. I'll upload the run to youtube in the coming days, this was faster than I expected and there's definitely room to go even faster but I'll let other people do that. It's a pretty demanding and time consuming game to run.

What's with top scores on the leader boards that were obviously done with cheats? Don't they get removed?

Hard Mode No Death Single Segment run done in 4h20mins

Lots of hiccups when dealing with humans that didn't happen during chapter practice but that's the reality of running a game like this. You can control alot of stuff but not all of it, especially in situations where AIs interact with each other.

Certainly a fair amount of room for improvement, sub 4 hours is very much possible and I wouldn't be surprised to see something closer to 3:30 being doable but I'm pretty sure I'm done with the game. Will be interesting to see what people do with this game down the line.

Last I had checked the only cheated times still up were on The Basement. Cheated times have been removed on at least one occasion in the past, and they likely will be in the future. It may turn out to be productive to inform a developer personally, likely through the Alien Isolation website, since they have been receptive to communication in the past. Though I would imagine they may be hesitant to remove some times unless they can be explicitly proven to be falsified.

Good work with the speed run Joe!
PsychoHypnotic did a full game run in Nightmare in 4h 57m 37s - though with several deaths and kills.

Hi guys

I just uploaded my latest full game speedrun to youtube. Completed the game in 3h27m44s in nightmare mode without dying and without killing.

Psycho: Great work on the speed run, dude! Quite the improvement. I must say I'm kinda intimidated by all the runs on high difficulties - I was hoping to take the easy way out and start trying runs on an easy difficulty, but all the runs so far are making that pretty hard to justify. ;p
I've only rented this overnight but was thinking about how a speedrun would work out. I found I couldn't really risk walking or running without the alien appearing, so I spent most of my time crouch walking. I guess you guys have found a way around this but I'm not watching any runs until I finish the game.

I had a glitch happen where I entered a vent and found the alien standing upright, walking on the spot. I didn't go near it but was able to move around freely for awhile. I forgot the exact area but I think it was that part early where you use those canisters. Would be nice to be able to get this to happen often but seemed random.

I haven't been following about this anything about this game since I returned it, though I did see a few comments around. Is it true the alien learns, for example, won't be fooled by noisemakers if you use them too much?

I never got far enough to get the flamethrower. Can you do cool stuff like just aim it and the alien backs down, so you can fake it out when you have no fuel?
Regarding the Alien learning: It does indeed! If you rely to heavily on certain tactics, like hiding under objects, in vents, in lockers, or on using things like noisemakers flashbangs, smoke grenades, flares, or molotovs too much, the Alien will begin paying less and less attention to it until it ignores it almost completely. If you hide under tables too much, you'll start noticing the alien crouch down to look under things more often, and it'll start checking lockers more frequently and aggressively if you like to use those. If you use the flamethrower on it too often, it'll begin taking more and more flame over time to get the alien to actually run away.

You can in fact pull up the flame thrower to get the alien to hesitate - it does a short cringe animation and hisses at you, giving you some time to back away, before it begins advancing on you. Unless you're close to a truly safe spot, he'll just come eat you unless you can get away fast enough though - but sometimes it does allow you to get out of line of sight and to safety, which is really awesome cinematically. The rate at which the alien learns is dependent on how often you use given tactics and what difficulty you're on - if you're on easy or novice, the alien basically won't learn, or learn extremely slowly. On hard and nightmare, you get much fewer chances with certain tactics to fake out the alien before it starts ignoring your items more and more.

thank you Smiley actually there is a guy who is speedrunning it on novice mode....just look him up on twitch...blackmangouste is his name I guess... his best time was 3h26... you can play the game way differently on novice so 3h15 or even 3h10 should be pretty much possible.... I am just doing nightmare for the extra challenge Cheesy especially regarding the item management which is critical on nightmare.

Really impressive. The RNG in this game made my head hurt and you made it look scripted. Looking forward to more of your runs (though maybe you should turn off the follower sound so you don't have a heart attack). Smiley

Hey guys, been a while since there's been an update regarding this run, but here's some news.

The strategies for the run have begun to crystallize in the wake of Fenix and PsychoHypnotic's runs, and some minor skips and glitches have come up, though no major sequence breaks as of yet. For now, most competition seems to be centered around the nightmare difficulty mode, because I guess we're all a bunch of masochists.

PsychoHypnotic has improved his time, and his personal best presently stands at 3 hours 25 minutes. Lately he's been working on a series of speed run tutorial videos for each mission in the game, which was just recently finished.

Another runner by the name of Lite_Z has begun running the game and just recently managed a 3 hour 33 minute PB, and the dude's relentless so improvement on that time likely won't be too long to follow. And it wasn't long to follow at all! He just improved his PB and now has a 3 hour 28 minute time.

I've jumped into the nightmare% arena recently myself, and though my first run wasn't that great primarily due to having no clue what I was doing, I've recently managed a PB of 3 hours 44 minutes that I'm still a bit dissatisfied with, so improvements will hopefully be forthcoming. Improvements were more swiftly forthcoming than anticipated - in fact I wound up with a world record of 3 hours and 20 minutes, saving 5 minutes over Psycho's run.

In the arena of Novice%, there seems to be a lone vanguard in the form of Blackmangouste, who has a PB of 3 hours 13 minutes.

Aside from the campaign main event, the survivor mode leaderboards are still plugging along. The Basement has a few more cheated times than before, but also features the first legitimate sub-50 second time as completed by Jig, with a time of 49.95 seconds though there is no video of the run. On the first map of the Corporate Lockdown DLC, Severance, a very tricky clip through a window was discovered and recorded by Jig allowing for a time of 1 minute 9 seconds that may indicate further possibilities both on other survivor mode maps and in the main campaign, though I haven't heard of any skips utilizing this trick as of yet. (Except one usage in Chapter 14 that doesn't actually save time and is only a swag strat.) The remainder of the maps are dominated by top times from a few usual subjects, including Bobbe, Jig, DeepEye, BurleyBrawler, the newcomer SsEe, and myself. Apart from a pair of videos from Jig, I don't know of any recordings or streams of these survivor mode runs besides my own.

The most recent DLC, Safe Haven, features a significantly longer mission that takes 45 minutes or more to complete for most players. Top time on Safe Haven is 16 minutes 0.96 seconds by myself, followed by 16 minutes 59.99 seconds by Jig, and 17 minutes 11.60 seconds by Bobbe. Sub 16 minutes is absolutely possible, though is somewhat difficult considering the various circumstances of the Safe Haven playthrough.

And that's the State of the Alien Speedrun as things stand! Hopefully I haven't accidentally omitted anything here, and if I have feel free to yell at me. Hopefully we'll see more people jumping into speedrunning this game, whether it be in survivor mode or in nightmare%.
Are there any runs of Crew Expandable ? It's a fairly short DLC, or is it just not good for speedrunning ?
There aren't any runs of Crew Expendable that come to mind, but there's no reason that it shouldn't be run either. If anything it would be like a more thematic survivor mode map run, so if you're into it, go for it!
Apologies for the double post, but there's been a bit of a flurry of activity as of late. Last night, I completed a run in 3 hours and 20 minutes, saving 5 minutes over Psycho's previous Record run. My time at the top was short lived however, as Psycho just this morning retook the throne and now has a time of 3h 18m.
