No, this thread is not a joke.
Yesterday I discovered the little flash game Adventure Ponies (can also be downloaded for larger screen/offline play here). It's a small, short, 8-bit style platformer that you can play through assix five different characters. I found it oddly fun to play, and before I knew it, I was trying to speedrun it. When I say short, I mean short - at the moment, my target time with what's proven to be the slowest character is below 3½ minutes. Playing it with a gamepad and JoyToKey because the keyboard controls makes some moves hard to do in combination quick. It's only six small stages long, with a boss after every stage.
So. You start with having only Twilight Sparkle and unlock one new pony each time you beat the game. They are as follows, in unlock order:
Twilight Sparkle: Shoots lasers. Uses teleport pads to get around. My current best time with her: 3:13.09, target time is 3:10.
Rainbow Dash: Can fly, which often is the fastest way to navigate levels, and uses a dash move to attack that makes for fast movement but is awkward as all hell to actually attack and break walls with. Current best is 2:54:25, target time is 2:50.
Applejack: Has a strong kick attack and climbs ladders. Just like everything else in the game (but especially the cloud platforms), the kick has a weird hitbox. Current best is 2:58.17, target time is 2:55.
Pinkie Pie: Plays like a combination of Twilight and Applejack. She uses her party cannon to attack which is functionally identical to Twilight's lasers (aka: weak but has range) except they fire lower, making one boss fight slightly different, but must climb ladders like Applejack. This makes her the slowest of the characters, as ladders makes for the slowest levels, and the projectile attack means bosses are slower than with Applejack's kick. So my current best is 3:25.56, and the target time is 3:20.
Rarity: 100% identical to Twilight in everything but colour, so I have them bundled together on my time sheet. Don't even remember which one of them I actually used for what I said was my best Twilight time.
Fluttershy: Fluttershy is the most amazing character. She can fly like Rainbow Dash and her stare attack is only minorly weaker than Applejack's kick, plus it hits in front of her rather than back. This means she tears down walls like nobody else, can defeat most bosses in a few hits and can take a shortcut in the final level that noone else can by breaking a wall from below (weird hitboxes on things works both for and against you in this game), effectively cutting the level in half. This makes her by far the fastest character, my best time with her is 2:11.xx and my target time, of course, is 2:10. I don't think under two minutes is possible.
I'll try to record some videos of it, but idk if I'll be able to do that before I go to my parents for Christmas. I just need to remember how the hell to get Camstudio to record actual audio and not just microphone. Or find some other good and free screen capture program that doesn't have the problems with audio that Camstudio has.
