Hello Everyone

I'm creating this thread to give information (and start discussions) about Adventure Island II on the NES. I'm currently speedrunning this game (aiming for a warpless run) and I can't seem to find some useful information on the internet. Because of this, I've decided to build up my own documentation to rely to. What I did is that I mapped the entire game with the different paths and inventory items you can get from each level. I've decided to share this work with you guys in case some of you are interested in speedrunning this game too.

I've built up those map entirely by doing some trial and errors on every stage of the game, so there might be some missing stuff (specially on the inventory items). If you find something, feel free to point it out, I'll fix it and update a new version as soon as possible.

For newcomers to this game, here is some information about the game so it'll be easier to understand and read the maps :

- Master Higgins (the hero) got his girlfriend's sister, Tina, kidnapped (that's a bit strange) and he tries to rescue her by going through every "Adventure Islands" of the game. On each island, Master Higgins has to brave different environments to reach the island's boss. Once he kills the boss, he goes to the next island until he finds Tina (unfortunately, on the tougher island).
- The way the game works is when you clear a level, it gives you the opportunity to choose 1 of 8 floating eggs. Depending on which egg you choose, Higgins will go to a different level until you reach the boss.
- To clear the islands, you have the help of 4 types of dinosaurs. Each of them is represented by the sign of a card type in a 52 playing card set. You can get the blue dino (heart), red dino (spade), water dino (diamond) and flying dino (clubs). When you collect a dinosaur and you already have on equipped, you immediately pick up the new one, and the old one goes to your "inventory". (Like the item inventory in Super Mario Bros 3). Along with dinos, you can also save hammers which are used to attack when not on a dino.

Additional info on the dinosaurs :
Blue Dino (heart):
He is the best dino around mostly because its attack is really quick so you can easily spam 2 shot really fast (to kill 2 close enemies). It also runs at the maximum speed available. The downside is that it attacks low so you often have to jump to kill certain enemies (like floating spiders). This dino dies when it touches water, lava, poison and obstacles/enemies.

Red Dino (spade):
Its attack is slower than blue dino but it attacks higher. At very close range, it can kill 2 enemies with one blow. It also runs at the maximum speed available. Unlike the blue dino, it can go into lava and poison without dying, only water and obstacles/enemies can kill it.

Water dino (diamond):
Walks slow on earth, doesn't have an attack and can be killed by everything except water. When in water, it runs at the maximum speed available. Master Higgins needs an hammer to attack.

Flying dino (clubs):
Can fly anywhere on the map. To attack, it spits small rocks underneath. When on the ground, it has the slowest walking speed of the game. This dino dies when it touches water, lava, poison and obstacles/enemies.

I've built the maps like this :

Every level's number is in a grey circle. I've put inventory items you can find in a grey rectangle. When there is an X, it means no item can be found in the level.
The tricky part is the arrows. An arrow means a path that can be done when choosing an egg. The number in red is the first egg you can take to get there. For example, if you are at level one, to go to level two there is a number (1) and to go to level three there is a number (4). It means that if you take the 1st floating egg you go to level two and if you take the fourth egg, you go to level three.

Here are the map links :

By the way, I tried to keep the arrows less messy as possible but it was inevitable starting from world 5 (specially on world 8) but if you follow the levels one by one, the paths will be clear.

For the route I'm speedrunning, I don't know what you guys think, but here it is :

1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 1-boss, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4, 2-6, 2-boss, 3-1, 3-3, 3-5, 3-boss, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 4-6, 4-boss, 5-1, 5-2, 5-4, 5-boss, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, 6-5, 6-9, 6-boss, 7-1, 7-2, 7-3, 7-5, 7-boss, 8-1, 8-3, 8-5, 8-9, 8-boss

The main reason I choose those levels is I'm trying to avoid underwater levels as they get very annoying and sometimes you have to wait at obstacles (specially near the endgame).

What do you guys think about this?
Thread title:
Really good information. I've played and enjoyed this game, but I never went into these kind of details. I'd definitely check out a no-warp run though. I'm not sure how many other runners there are of this game, but maybe whitman_price would be interested to discuss. I don't know how often he comes to these boards, so you might need to pm him though.
Thanks ktwo

I'll try to pm whitman_price to see if he wants to share knowledge of this game.
As for the run, I'm perfecting my skills (specially on the endgame levels) for the next couple of weeks as I'll be on vacation. After then I'll stream my attempts to get a great warpless run.
I'll put this here as infos for people who tries to speedrun this game. I found out a really useful glitch in the game.

In underwater levels, if you have the water dino and goes at full speed (I didn't try it on normal speed) and you DON'T PRESS A (to swim up) when you hit a spike, it'll prevent the damage. This means that you can navigate through mazes of spikes without being hit if you time your "swim up actions" at the right moment.

PS : I'll try to do it as master higgins (no dinosaurs) to see if it reacts the same.
