OKay - I compared 4 runs I did recently. And I noticed something interesting. I pick up an average of 10 seconds on Madzombie in...
Thieve's Town?!?
Our routes are identical...but somehow I am.
Did I also say I pick up time on the Trinexx battle already, too? Since I use Darren's strategy of hitting the heads from behind, and a surefire way to get all three hits on the head section instead of the middle? It's like 4 seconds right there.
I'm starting to get the latter half of this game pretty nailed, after getting the light world done pretty consistently now. I'm thinking about doing some more practice this week, and then doing some full attempts this coming weekend.
Also - I have to send these probably over CD to Radix...as I have only dial-up. HOWEVER, I may be able to get access to high speed for a job I am doing very soon...so if I have the run done by then, I could send it. We'll see.
If I get below 1:40 - I won't do another run unless somebody beats my time pretty quickly, which would really piss me off.
First - the two times I listed, add 30 seconds cuz I timed it wrong. I didn't add the intro text when in bed for some odd reason.
Second - this is really frustrating. I feel like I am doing much better than Madzombie, and I end up not picking up that much time. Even when I have faster routes and faster boss battle strategies...I'm barely picking up time.
Thirdly - Big thanks goes out er0kdrah. He seriously gave me a Ganon's Tower route that is 30-40 seconds faster than Madzombie's run, and about 20 seconds faster than Wak's. That's the only thing really keeping my sub 1:40 attempt alive at the moment.
I mean, for example, from my average runs:
East Palace: Behind by 1-3 seconds usually. Desert Palace: Even or barely ahead. Tower of Hera: Ahead by 8-9 seconds. Top of Pyramid: Ahead by 15 seconds. Palace of Darkness: Ahead by 7-8 seconds. Thieve's Town: Ahead by 13-15 seconds. Skull Woods: Ahead by 18-19 seconds. Swamp Ruins: Ahead by 19-20 seconds. Misery Mire: Ahead by 18-19 seconds. Ice Palace: Ahead by 29-30 seconds. Turtle Rock: Ahead by 37-40 seconds. Ganon's Tower: Ahead by 65-75 seconds. Ganon: Ahead by 80-85 seconds.
To overcome the sub 1:40 barrier, I need 87 seconds. The above are from FULL ATTEMPT RUNS. When I practice - doing each level one at a time, I get as far ahead as 100-110 seconds ahead - which is 14-24 seconds under 1:40, or 1:39:46-1:39:36.
I dont even care if it isnt sub 1:40 (but judging from all those smileys it seems it might be ;D), i am just excited about getting to see a new and improved run no matter how much it is improved by, but hey the more the better Congratulations!
Depending on compression...and when Radix uploads...is when you get it.
I'm going to put a minor warning. There is ONE thing in this run that is blantantly wrong. I get a wrong key in Misery Mire. I have no clue why I did it...and if anyone's going to beat me, it's probably going to be on this stupid thing. It's about a 10 second thing. Other than that, everything else in the "mistake" category is only human.
Well, I didn't dash left after warping to Spot 8 to go to Ice Palace, and there were one or two other very small things I didn't do I think. Oh well, I got my goal, I'm done.
Final Time for you guys whining: 1:39:55 according to SDA, 1:40:08 according to TG.
I actually have a few more things which could slightly improve your time more. But since you seem finished with your Link to the Past, I'll keep it to myself for the time being.
Heh, I'm never doing another run, so it's all for you or another
Btw, I had a faster time than I said earlier. It's 1:39:48. Had I gotten the right key and dashed in this one spot for a shortcut, it would have been around 1:39:30 I bet.
There are some stuff that could be improved for sure - replicating Madzombie's Kholdstare battle - saves 9 seconds over my time. That as another big thing that could help.
I also had some cool tricks of my own:
1. In Misery Mire, before the boss entrance, I dash the wall in front of me twice to bounce over the fire tail thing and the bubble (anti-fairy).
2. In Ganon's Tower, on the room with 4 torches and the floor falls, I use a dash bounce to avoid damage AND bypass waiting for the thing to come hit you (if you try to charge at the spark, it knocks you off).
Something I also noticed...
You do NOT hold A to jump faster...and you also CAN'T jump faster until you have the Pegasus Shoes. You have to PUSH UP against the edge, then PRESS A. Somebody explained this to me wrong, so I did not do it right at all in this run, so about 10 seconds could be picked up on just that I bet. It's also not easy to do it facing up.
I'm not 100% convinced Skull Woods before Misery Mire is faster in a console run. I think perhaps Madzombie's route is faster in the end, but if it is, it is not by much at all.
I could have spent less time getting the blue rupees in Palace of Darkness.
I did not execute the TAS strategy for the East Palace Stalfos Room bug properly - I kill 3 "invisible" ones rather than 2...could have saved 3 seconds.
I am sure my Helmasaur and Vitreous battles could be faster if luck helped out.
Agahnim 2 battle could definately be faster, and not with just luck.
I'll think of more stuff for the commentary. Sorry for the delay for the upload - work interfered, so hopefully Monday I'll get this to Radix.
I feel that it's very possible. And I feel that someone very soon, will try to attempt it(possibly Madzombie, and me, but only on emulator player legitimately, of course). I think I'll give some time into it soon(busy with many other things).
I've found yet another trick which saves around 5 seconds(I know, not much but saving time = good). I'm quite surprised it wasn't used in the 1:20 hack run, nor the fact that the trick has been publicised. I think I might go for a 1:38 using emulator(so obviously it won't be on SDA). Don't worry, you'll keep your re-claimed record =)
I don't intend on trying another Pure speed run this year. I still have my mind set on getting the 100% run first, I just need to get my arse in gear and choose a capture card to buy :P. Anyway, it'll probably take less time to nail a 100% run, as less skill is needed for bosses (though I need more luck). I'm working full time this summer, whereas earlier in the year I was at school (sometimes :p) so I had a lot more free time. And I probably irritated TSA a bit when I took a record he spent ages working on only 3 months after he set it, which was not my intention, so I'm not going to try and beat his new record so soon.
