So yeah... thanks. I had always thought it was impossible to beat door 5 small because I never thought to just wait. So stupid of me. Saves 1 time unit. With a little practice maybe 2. In door 8 I entered dark room at 367, on my first succesful try (which was my second try) for door 5 I got 368. Just gotta run <-- then --> when the spikes are going up so you get p speed sooner.

EDIT: I did a little more playing, and as far as I can tell I get anywhere from 365 to 368 doing the exact same thing. There might be something random going on, or there might be something I am doing wrong. I'll try to figure it out later.
Take This! Ultra Frisbee-Disk Attack!
How difficult was it for you jimsfriend to get that 386?Can you do it consistently enough to lower the time by a significant amount?
If you're going to wait for the spikes in door 5, I would recommend standing at the far left side of the room facing the spikes.  When the spikes start to rise, count the number of big "studs" (small spikes facing horizontally) that you see rising on the one closest to you.  For me, I go a tiny bit after I see the third and final stud leave the floor.  That way, you have enough distance between you and the first spike to get to p-run right as you're going under this spike, and if you time it right you can still go under at the earliest possible time.  I have gotten a 368 doing this, but I'm sure your door 2 is much better than mine small, so I'm guessing a 369 or better is possible with this method.

Hows the progress on this thing going? I'm totally psyched about this run...

ctrl c + ctrl v = Unfortunately I have a job so I can't play Mario as much as I would like, it is currently mostly limited to weekends and occasionally late at night.

At the rate things are going though Fabian might finish his [96 exit TAS] run before I finish mine. That's a depressing thought. Really my run is up to luck now. I have practiced enough that I can't get better. Hitting a <4 frame window in several places in the run can't really rely 100% on skill, so yeah.

/copy paste.

Out of a pm, but I figured it still served mostly the same purpose. Hopefully I will have it done by xmas. Seems like a long wait, but it's already been a year. Going to college should actually help me finish since I get Tuesday+Thursday off (and weekends too), so looking forward to that. And I've been doing a lot of research on glitches and stuff since my next project will likely be a TAS.

I'll let you know if I get a submittable attempt as soon as I get it.

jimsfriend, what game are you thinking of TASing? If you're any bit as good at TASing as you are at speedrunning, I'm sure it will be a great run.  If you havent decided yet, I would strongly urge you to do a 91-exit SMW small run (give or take, whatever the highest possible "full" completion is).  If you made this run well, it would be my all time favorite run by far.  I get excited just thinking about the crazy TAS stunts you could pull without being "limited" (you dont really get into the action) by flying.  All while throwing in the hopping glitch, this would be a definate must-watch.  If there are dozens of Metoid runs out there with slightly different rules, it wont be that weird to do an "almost full" completion" of SMW.  Plus, you already have tons of SMW experience, which I'm sure would come in handy.  I have been waiting for a full small run (it may seem like an oxymoron ;)) of SMW for a very ling time, and you are the man for the job.  I stongly urge you to consider this project.

We'll see what I do first when I finish my small run. I have an idea, but right now the only definite thing is that it will be either SMW or SDW. What type of run will be determined when it comes time. For now I'll just worry about my small run. That's all I have to say about that.
Well a SMW-related project is what I was hoping for, so thats good to hear.  Anything you can do with this game will surely be exciting.

Well that was nice. I just made run which is definitely improvable, but also a good starting point. It will give me a good estimate for what my time should come out to. Will edit back with details/time/specifics after I finish rewatching it. Thanks everybody for your continued support and hope to finish this by the end of the week. That would be really exciting, since I will leave for 15ish days after that, which would obviously hurt my game. Just thought I'd give you a heads up, and will rewatch it and make comments (not for submission, just like a WIP) now.

VITAL STATS:
Start time – Gain control of mario on overworld map (leave Yoshi’s house) at 3:02
YI2 – Missed a couple coins, but nothing bad speed related. Got the 5 up.
YI3 – Rode the platforms properly, noticeably sped up when attempting hop glitch
YI4 – Missing Yoshi coin looks bad, good pipe entrance though
Castle 1 – lost about .25 second from bad door entry, but good boss fight
DP1 – Really good shell grab, all aesthetic tricks pulled off, about as good as it gets
DS1 – Only made 1 corner boost, all in all a good run of the level though
DGH – Cool sound glitch, slight delay at door entrance, nothing worth worrying about
DP3 – Flawless Victory!
DP4 – Missed a jump, total loss of ~1 second
Castle 2 - Death cost 13 seconds, slight delay at door entry, minor error caused by difficulty to control  during lag, error during boss, total loss of ~2 seconds. With the death this level can be improved by about 15 seconds.
VD1 – Jumping error caused different strategy to be taken, ~10 seconds.
VS1 – Minor error <1 second, made up for it with good luck from Chuck
SW2 – Perfect!
SW3 – Minor error costing <1 second
SW4 – Hell yeah!
Front Door – Decent management of fencing, missed door 5 for slight time delay
Back Door – Purposeful slight delay for fear of dying
Bowser Fight – First round amazing! Second round pretty good. Third round slight loss of time due to bowser coming down a little before the last hit, so he had to go back up before I lost control, about 1 second. Time stops at 18:41.

Total time comes out to 15:39.
Errorless time would be just under 15:15, unless this is my 5th calculation error in a row.

awesome, I hope all goes well in your attempts... good luck Smiley

Damn jimsfriend! With how much precision you input into your speedruns, I can't wait to see what a TAS product from you would do [to amaze me beyond unreachable limits]!
jimsfriend, I've been working on the Bowser Fight (small) a lot lately and I think I've got it optimized.  I get a time of 1:59 using the timing rules that time starts when the stage appears and stops with the last hit on Bowser.  I made a video of it to show my techniques.

Bowser Fight - 1:59

I was wondering how your Bowser Fight compares to this.  Is it the same or slower or do you know any faster techniques?  I think the first two sets of throws are as fast as possible, but I might not have the best technique on the third set.  Note that in the video, my first set is a little bit sloppy because Bowser makes it further to the left before getting hit with the very first throw than I would normally allow him to get, but this isnt a big enough difference that would change the overall time.  Thanks for your feedback.
Long live SF64!
I've been watching this thing unfold since the spring and I'm extremely pumped about this run.  I'm a junior in college and I know what it's like to devote that time to perfecting a game while juggling a "real life" at the same time.  We all do.  Keep up the good work, we all believe in you!  It'll all come together soon enough!

Actually, time isn't a problem. I have more time than I know what to do with. The problem is a lack of a vcr in my dorm. My birthday is October 27, but I might be able to manage something before that. Sorry, I'll be sure to let everyone know as soon as I get a vcr again. If this doesn't happen by my birthday I will just submit the run I have now and hope to improve it eventually.
I seriously suck at the 2d mario platformers so ill probably be amazed when i finally see this  :o.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

FWIW I really think you should submit the run you have done. There's always time to improve it later and we're all really looking forward to seeing it.

Bleh. I guess I could do it next weekend when I go home. My biggest beef with the run is that the death was really really really lame. Really.
Long live SF64!
I just checked Ebay and they've got about 500 VCRs...you should be able to get a cheap one for under $20 if you wanted to

...what state do you live in (assuming US) ...maybe someone could help you out?
I think doing everything well and having one big but short mess-up (the death) is better than having sloppy play throughout and having the same time, so the death really isnt that bad.

I agree with Fabian that you should just submit the run you've made already.  We've beeen waiting for this for a long time, and again, an improved version could always be sent in later.

You could view it from the other angle. He hasn't been settling for less this entire time; why start now when he's, 3 ... 4 months at worse, close to a finalized product to display?

I don't consider this to "settle". To "settle" is to say "screw it, the Star World 4 trick is too damn hard, I'm just gonna get a switch palace instead" and record that, hopefully perfect. There's always time to improve execution of the same strategies.

I really do hope you submit this jimsfriend.
I'm happy to wait for the final kick-ass version. As long as there is a rough ETA that is.
Long live SF64!
Keep it up jimsfriend, I know you'll nail it eventually, just keep trying as long as you can stand it.  We all really respect how much you've put into this run and look foward to the final product. Good luck!

I tend to respect what a director or aurthor intends for their product to be viewed as. You can want the run right now, jimsfriend, I'll be patiently waiting in the corner over here until you're satisfied with a product worthy of being produced by you.
Any updates? I'd hate for this to disappear.
