Well, lots of progress over the past few days. We've now finished our Research and Development run with a time of 17:13. It's an awesome run, we'll be making an audio commentary in a couple of days and RandomEngy has agreed to put the video together for us, so we know it's gonna be top notch :).

Watched the R&D run, looks really good but I haven't played it so I didn't really know what was going on or what you were skipping with all the OoB stuff. Nice ABH and aiming, are you going to submit it here?

Thanks!

I love your uplink run.
I am glad that someone with some real speedrunning skills finally decided to run uplink. Smiley
I consider myself a casual speedrunner, so my run isn't that good. I have always wanted to redo it, proper. But I guess now there's no point. Cheesy
I'm glad you ended up using many of the tricks that I found, like the marine boost up on the container, etc.
How many segments did you end up with?
Every time I attempted to redo my run, I got so damn annoyed with the freeze-bug that occurs after level load and savegame load, so annoyed that I stopped. I hate that bug. Sad

By the way, have you noticed that your file finished uploading at exactly 13:37 (server time) on my website? http://stefansundin.com/speedruns/
That can't be a coincidence. It was meant to be. Cheesy

Yeah, with your tricks and my own researching of the game, I think we got a very good route! Smiley
The run is packed with hard tricks, so it's 17 segments, I can't get it more optimizeed as this. More segments than that would just make it harder.

I hate that bug too Sad Thats why I'm speedrunning with WON HL Grin

Very nicely done quadrazid, that was an awesome speedrun!

As far as I know, mods aren't allowed to be submitted, so no we aren't.

Thanks for the comment Smiley
Hi, im new do this forum, although ive seen most of the runs you have on the SDA game lists. and i was wondering if there is Half-Life: Episode One/Two speed run out there, or if it's being performed right now? Would appreciate an answer Smiley

Episode 1 is being done, episode 2 will be done following the completion of that (they are 60% or so through episode 1 at the moment).

Thanks! now i got something new to see :D:D

I have some potentially huge news.

I was asking Mike what the deal was with the Half-Life: Decay run in the queue.  The only run of Decay I know of on the official version is the one on which my friend, two others in the forums, and myself worked on a couple years ago.  That was for the PS2 version, the only official version and therefore the only acceptable one according to SDA's current standards. I wanted to know if the run in the queue was the Decay run being shared in the forums as of late, how it came to be accepted, and whether I could be a verifier.  (BTW, I won't try to be one now, since PC and PS2 versions are so incredibly different control wise and what not)

ANYWAY, here is what Mike said in response after I reminded him a few times:

"Sorry I didn't get to this earlier.

Since we now allow freeware, it doesn't really make any sense to ban mods, as long as if they're well-constructed mods (i.e. not those Doom 1000 map packs from the mid-90's)."

If this means what it appears to mean, then Half-Life mods may now all be hosted on SDA as long as they're well constructed or aren't in some other way exceptional (and are presumably verified).

Now, it is of course possible that Mike will step in soon and clarify that he didn't mean this, but based on the quote it sounds like we may be able to submit mod speedruns!

That's what I've been wondering since they accepted the Decay pc run, thanks for the investigation. However, it's stupid imo to accept the pc speedrun as both pc and ps2 as there are huge differences as you say, like the ps2 speedrun has a lot more invisible walls that cuts down at least 50% of the tricks in the pc version.

Reminder: different categories.
Folks to be honest, Half Life 2 is such a good game, I am playing it on my XBOX. I wonder, will there be any 3rd sequel?

The new rule raises several questions.  How will the game listings be modified to accommodate the (potential) number of mod runs, if at all?  What other criteria will emerge, like mod length, mod difficulty, or mod uniqueness (just to name a few), if any?  Are the runs already in this thread acceptable?  On the latter, I'm not sure how many were recorded with adequate video quality.  And for that matter, I'm not sure this thread even serves a purpose if well-constructed mods will be from hereon approved, unless we expect people to start running poorly-constructed mods soon.

I suppose the runners responsible for the mod runs posted here (if they'd like to submit) should just start submitting to Mike or at least inquiring about the submission process to figure all of this out.

Then Afraid of Monsters Director's Cut would be a good mod to run and submit.

Running away from zombies in the dark would imo be boring to speedrun/watch.

@Zhouy:
Looks like you don't know this game very well (besides, your discription sounds more like Left 4 Dead and that run was awesome). First of all I wouldn't even call those things real zombies, but rather zombie-like monsters/ghosts (their movements are too different and you're on drugs, so everything in that game is just your imagination and not an infection thing). There are also a whole bunch of other monsters in that game. And then there are many many nice tricks and shortcuts I've found that sometimes let you skip big parts of levels, and that's even though you don't have any grenades or other weapons that can push you (maybe I should record those tricks). And you can higher the brightness so much, that you don't even need a flashlight in most levels at all (maybe except for the woods). And I remember having problems with graphical glitches, which seem to only appear on the CD version of HL. Another problem is, that I've never found ending 3, so I don't even know whether that way is the fastest or not (at the moment I'd tend to use ending 1 or the route to ending 1 with ending 4).

@quadrazid:
Nah, I'm too busy running Medal of Honor. And my HL/bunnyhopping skills aren't good enough for SDA.
I'm a Half-Life runner ;)
Oh I know the game, my post was mostly a joke (well, the hospital part would be like I described but w/e). I'm sure there's plenty shortcuts as you say, I mean, which hl mod doesn't have shortcuts? My point still remains though that this mod might be boring to speedrun, however I don't really know that since I haven't tried it.

Ah, okay. As for the hospital, you can push the button that opens the door to the next level through the outside of the hospitel, wich saves a lot of time. The only bad thing is like I said that you don't have grenades. Whowever, these modded bullsquids can push you, wich I think is usefull somewhere at the end of the woods levels. You can use that boost to enter that house through a window on the second floor, wich saves you pushing a button somewhere else in that level to open the front door of that house. I think alternatively you can also jump on a wheelchair monster.

Who knows, maybe I'll run it when I'm done with MOH but I'll probably use Fraps rather than the demo function.

edit:

Here's a video with all the shortcuts I know so far:

PS:
Does anyone know where I can find the key to this door in "cityx"?
I think it leads to ending 3.

Didn't notice the edit. This might be a cool speedrun after all Smiley
I think you should run it yourself, you don't have to make it super optimized.
I recommend installing Steam and use HL's demo recording tool instead of fraps.

Theres some kind of Game of the decade vote thing going here.

http://www.crispygamer.com/features/2009-12-11/game-of-the-decade-championship-round.aspx

Thought this might be a good place to get Half Life 2 a few more votes. Didn't see the point in making a thread about it.

Just a little video of a segment from the episode one run. Can't wait to complete this run and watch it in its entirety ^_^

Don't have internet at home, so I can't use steam.
BTW, I finally found ending 3. It's slow. And I found two nice shortcuts for ending 2:

I'm thinking whether I should do a run with the reward weapon on hard difficulty. That weapon is so nice, I could even use it as a flashlight (would be annoying to hear the shooting sound in all the dark areas though).
