Zhouy:  My mistake.  But I don't know if you've been following the recent discussions concerning Half-Life (though it's mostly regarding scripting), but if you have then I imagine you'll see the difficulty in proposing mod versions, even if bhop was a mod and not a script.  Half-life was 'grandfathered,' meaning that even though the scripts and I guess mod which were used in the run(s) were allowed at the time, they violate the current rules.  Since they're already on the site, they're going to be allowed in future runs as well, but it's not because SDA endorses scripts but because of the previously mentioned grandfather clause.  Now then, as far as creating a mod for the purposes of coop'ing, you may be able to argue through analogy that if bhop can be used, so too could another mod.  After all, Half-Life as-a-game-for-which-runners-can-use-scripts-and-mods has been grandfathered, not the specific scripts and mods used to run it.  So, you could say you should be able to use a new mod which has only been created for the purposes of speedrunning just as bhop was.  That's one side of the argument.  But, given Half-Life's contentious standing in the SDA community right now, I think most people are going to have a problem with creating a new category of running which is only made possible through the use of another as-of-now unprecedented mod.  And then there's the whole slippery-slope argument about using mods.  I think the fact that bhop was a mod has eluded most people's awareness.  Mods are generally forbidden on SDA, hence the purpose of this stickied thread.  Anyway, if you want to try, send a PM to mike or something and see what happens if nothing else.

Inexistence:  Nice.  Since 'flying' has already been allowed for the HL2DQ run, you should definitely make use of that.  Keep up the good work.
I'm a Half-Life runner ;)
I probably won't do the coop run, anyway.
I am afraid no ones riding nothing!!!
Do it and upload it on rapidshare or something. I and many other dedicated half-life followers will watch it whether or not it is uploaded on the main site. So no probs on not getting on the site.

Actually, a bunch of us (The episode one run team) are planning to start working on a website called SourceRuns. We'll accept speedruns of all source (and gold source) games, mods and stuff like that. Obviously all of it isn't yet worked out, but we have the basic plan. When we're done we're hoping it'll be the place where you can submit all of your runs like that co-op run or other mods. Smiley

We had hldq before, obviously half life done quick, but we wanted to encompass other source games, such as Portal or L4D, not necessarily just half life, so DemonStrate suggested SourceRuns.

^Sounds like a great idea.

Zhouy:  I hope you still do a coop run, anyway, and just post it somewhere else.  It'd be great to see.
If we were you, we would quit now.

Yeah... they said HalfLifeRuns at first, but there aren't that many Half-Life games (official ones) that already haven't been ran yet. Restricting it to just Half-Life cuts out any custom mods and such. Plus, the reason it makes the most sense to do Source engine (or Gold Source engine) games is because they all have a STRONG relationship with each other; they use the same engine, which usually means that glitches and tricks found in general for that engine will apply to ALL games. Now, I know there are different types of the engine (Orange Box version, etc), but the site would accept any runs made using the engine in general (including games that aren't even FPS's, like racing and action made with the engine).

Also, another reason would be for this switch is because in the Half-Life/Source world, we like to use AHK and some other light scripting to accomplish tasks that are repetitive or would just making running generally easier. I've always felt that Source game runs are basically like an inbetween of TAS and regular speedruns. I think the site could also accept TSA (Timescale assisted) runs, or Frame-Advance runs, because that is the closest thing you can get to TAS in an unemulated environment for PC games like this. I like to have 'looser' rules on how to run a game instead of being super restrictive. Honestly, I wanted to do a Episode 2 run where hunter_shoot_flechette was allowed (Or Portal for that matter, and yes, Portal has that command), mainly because it is a command that, through Valve's infinite wisdom, did NOT sv_cheats restrict, so you can shoot those at any time you want to. It would be really cheap to those who don't know about it, but hey, its not a cheat command, so it's fine in my book. :-P.

Anyway, I'm at work, so I should be getting back to trying to get my damn C# program working. I hope SourceRuns will be a full fledged speedrun site someday.

We haven't sorted out any details or anything yet. We're certainly allowing AHK, though I'm not sure to what extent that allowance could be abused, so we might need some rules for that. I dunno about timescale/frame advance or anything. I guess we'll see about that as the site takes shape.

Sorry to double post, but figured it's appropriate since it's actually on-topic. Me and Igge are working on a speedrun for the HL2 EP2 mod Research and Development. Just finished level_1a, so we decided to upload it to Youtube. I ran all 3 segments. Link

EDIT:

level_1b is also up. I ran segments 1 3 and 5, he ran 2 and 4. Link

^ Oh sweet.  I've never played Research and Development.  How much of the game does this run cover?  It seems fun based on the run.

Nice job.  How is Episode One coming these days?
Yes, Inexistence is a word.
The two maps we have finished so far cover around 1/3 to 1/4 of the mod. It's not a long mod, but it is very fun.

Episode One is doing well, we're almost finished with citadel_03, which is the longest map really I think (Or the most difficult). Progressing nicely, albeit slowly, but we can't really help that.

Well, lots of progress over the past few days. We've now finished our Research and Development run with a time of 17:13. It's an awesome run, we'll be making an audio commentary in a couple of days and RandomEngy has agreed to put the video together for us, so we know it's gonna be top notch :).

Great run coolkid. I haven't played Decay, but the run still looked great.

My and igge's Research and Development run is finished and out now. Youtube link

Torrent links are in the comments of the Youtube videos.

Great run of Research and Development you guys!

I was really impressed of the fast bhop and the shots at the gunships.
I guess this is what a EP2 run will look like?

Thanks a lot man!

Well, Research and Development is very different to EP2. One's cramped and confined, whereas EP2 is wide landscapes and lots of awesome ABHing and collision boosts. Still, those are the basic tricks that'll be utilised I'd say. ABH, AFH and wallclimbing.

Also, just uploaded a little outtake from the R&D run. Hehe Cheesy

Excellent speedrun! And the outtake was quite cool  Smiley

Thanks a lot man! The run was also on Normal, not Easy though. Smiley

Scripts used for the object-boost and for the grenade-boost.
I'm not able to shave off a single second of this run.

I had plans of making this on Hard difficult. But realized half way through I wasn't, so I continued on easy.
The hard run would be 3 seconds slower than this, and way harder to produce (I would have  to rearrange the grenadeboost becuse I would'nt have that much health at that point, and more re-records to get past the grunts without loosing too much health)

I didn't get the video as smooth as I wanted, so you'll see some pause screens and lags. I also had some issues of time warping due to many segments.
2:21? Awesome!!! Grin
You're really not going to run it on hard difficulty too?

Not right now but I maybe can dig up a save-file somewhere and change skill. So I don't have to re-run the whole game Tongue
At 0:58 is a good point to change skill, but I don't know if thats fair... Maybe the grunts would have hit me 0,55-0,58 if the skill was on Hard?

EDIT: 0,49-0,58 was a extremly hard segment. And 1,06-1,13 would really be a pain on Hard skill. I had a hard time making it on Easy =P
Watched the run, it's so awesome. Can't believe you can get out of the roof of that antenna building without grenade boosting.

Better you change skill before 55 seconds.

I can imagine that. The game is just so full of grunts.
I love your uplink run.
I am glad that someone with some real speedrunning skills finally decided to run uplink. Smiley
I consider myself a casual speedrunner, so my run isn't that good. I have always wanted to redo it, proper. But I guess now there's no point. Cheesy
I'm glad you ended up using many of the tricks that I found, like the marine boost up on the container, etc.
How many segments did you end up with?
Every time I attempted to redo my run, I got so damn annoyed with the freeze-bug that occurs after level load and savegame load, so annoyed that I stopped. I hate that bug. Sad

By the way, have you noticed that your file finished uploading at exactly 13:37 (server time) on my website? http://stefansundin.com/speedruns/
That can't be a coincidence. It was meant to be. Cheesy
