Now I know what you're thinking...

Either:

A: Wtf...It's a flight sim, how can you speedrun it?

-or-

B: Wtf...what's Freespace?

My answer for A is, It is entirely possible. It'll just have to be slightly long...most of the missions are bent on scripting and what not...And there is also a "time shifting" ability for the game, meaning you can change the speed of the game play in-game (Get through the long boring bits that way.)

So, anyone want to back me up? Yay? Nay? Meh?

I'm still going to try and do it...and maybe I'll do FS2 afterwards...

...Made by Volition (now THQ) and Interplay.

It's along the same genre as Descent, but...in space! You can pick up FS2 in HOTU...but I'm not going to say where you can find it where I said it was to be found.

you fly around, blowing ships up, watch ships being blown up, etc, chase down ships, protect ships, listen to dialogue, etc...

It's a pretty fun game, but like I said, it's mostly scripted and is a real pain to try and play it on hard...so...I'll be doing it on the normal or easy level...

It should be good...aslong as I can record it...

Alrighty...this isn't dead, I...well...seeing from the lack of interest...it might be...but oh well!

I'm forseeing a 2 hour speed run...or less...

Just reinstalled the game and sped through the first 6 missions:

Times:

Mission 1: 2:39
Mission 2: 4:21
Mission 3: 4:54 (4:30 is possible I think)
Mission 4: 2:46 (oh ya...it's in impressive number on that mission)
Mission 5: 7:24 (6:00 is possible...I hope...)
Mission 6: 6:58

For a grand total of 29:02.

I'll probably do it similar to how the person doing the Descent speedrun is doing theirs.

but...man...it's a fun game. But there are a few harder missions coming up...harder...and longer missions...although I think I can speed them up...I think...Well...we'll know when I get fraps working properly.

(The Times are really correct because I used the speed up time thing that's built into the game...so..it's a bit short...in some cases...like mission 6...it's roughly half that time if I recorded it with fraps. (I had it going on 2x speed up)

But...it'll be interesting to see what the final time will be...

I love Freespace, though I played very little of the first one, the second is probably the best space sim ever.

Like you said, it might take a while, but it would be a good deviation from the norm when it comes to speed runs.

Yep, and most of the later missions are...long...

Here's the next batch of times!

Mission 7: 1:57
Mission 8: 11:19
Mission 9: 6:05
Mission 10: 15:41 (one of the longer missions...)
Mission 11: 7:34
Mission 12: 3:53

I'm going to go through the next 6 right now...see how far I get.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I know this is pretty off-topic, but while we're on the subject of space sims, has anybody looked into running games in the X-Wing trilogy? And no, I don't care enough to make a new topic.

Lol easy way to get speed record....

just start each mission, and press alt-j... do this 5 times and on the 5th go back to briefing and it should present you with an option to skip the level... lol cheap but should work

Is this series really ideal for speedrunning? I mean a lot of the missions have timed events (e.g. moving convoys/ships) so the times can't be improved.

If this got off the ground I would gladly help probably by running FS2.

I wouldn't time-shift though, it would make timing harder. Best to keep it on 1x then the ingame timer can be used for each mission.

Also I think single-mission runs would be best simply because of the number of missions!

What difficulty are you running?

EDIT- I wonder if Radix would let me use the Source Code Project for running FS2... its the same engine with bugfixes and graphical upgrades. Will probably ask him when the time comes.

Where would one get this source code project?  Grin

Awesome, thanks!

I've done a speedrun of the first proper mission (Surrender Belisarius!) and its encoding right now. Of course this is one of those missions where there is a convoy to escort so there can't be many time savings, but timing the jumpout is pretty tricky, plus it shows off the features of the SCP a bit Cheesy
