Mega Man X2 is notorious for throwing in random extra beats etc. especially Crystal Snail (the opening segment alternates between 3/4 and 7/8)

Overture from Castlevania 3 is written in 11/4, which is an absolutely epic time signature.

No others as notable as that.

Bubble Crab starts with seven bars of 6/8, then a bar of 4/4, and the rest is in 4/4 until it loops.

One Winged Angel has 3 bars of 7/8...at least the Advent Children version does, which I've seen people play lots of times on In The Groove >_>

Don't you force me to make a click track for that beast!

Also whoever said Lufia 2's boss theme has 7/4 is totally wrong, I think everything in that game is 4/4

I'm the only one who mentioned Lufia 2, and I said Idura's theme, not the boss theme. Also lots of stuff is non 4/4. Just sitting in my chair for 30 secs I can come up with the small town, dungeon, wedding music, underwater, mermaid place, and world's greatest trick.

CHECK FIRST POST FOR EVIDENCE LOL

In general the Lufia 2 soundtrack is pretty motorbike, though Grin Jugga jugga.

I actually started remixing Battle 2 (with an aim to medleyizing all the battle themes together) for a laugh: bwahaha

Parts of EXEC_DESPEDIA/. from Ar tonelico 2 are in 11/4. It's a pretty confusing bit of music, so it probably has other things in too.
O Zlda?
As much as I'd like to believe I'm bumping this thread because it deserves more attention, I really can't figure out what the time signature of Lethal Lava Land is supposed to be. Everything else in that game is 4/4 but I can't really find any references in it.

For that matter, the title music of Wind Waker is the same way. Multiple instruments play with the same spacing to each other but no real time seems to be established. However, WW has more signs of 4/4 once it gets going.

Opinions appreciated, I have an MP3 of the LLL theme if for some reason you need it.
That question popped up on VGMusic like a year ago, I forget what the answer was beyond the simple statement "there is no one time signature".

So it's free time? There's a bunch of instruments (2 sitar, 3 different kinds of drums, theremin) playing in their own times, I'd classify that as free time, but wanted to be sure there wasn't one confining signature that the whole piece actually respected.
I don't think so, no.
Yes, a worthless avatar riding my posts.
I'm pretty sure the Wind Waker title thing is just 6/8 (well I count it like a fast 3/4, they're interchangeable for me because I'm a scrub who listens to a lot of prog)

What's this Lethal Lava Land, I've never heard of it
O Zlda?
The WW title starts with just a harp playing the same chord over and over and different instruments get overlaid in different time signatures.

Lethal Lava Land? You've never played Super Mario 64? Watch any video of it.

oh right that's what it was called.

Holy shit this is some legit Hindu polyrhythmic shit going on right here. I was too young to hear most of this at the time but wow

crazy 32nd percussion, would be harder than Anubis if this were on ITG >_>

the best approach would be to find a pattern in that percussion I think.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Here's a few videogame tunes with irregular time signatures:

Mario Kart 64 Results is all in 11/8
Ocarina of Time Ganondorf Battle switches between 13/16 and 10/16
Ocarina of Time Fairy Flying has 1 bar of 11/16, followed by 1 bar of 4/4, in the intro, and then the main piece has 4 bars of 13/16, with 4 bars of 10/16.
Donkey Kong Country Bad Boss Boogie has occasional bars of 5/8.

For Lethal Lava Land, I read somewhere that it was 5/4, but not only can I not get a 5/4 beat from it, I can't even tell which is a beat. E.g. are the fast little weird noises that play sixteenth notes, or triplet sixteenth notes? Or even something like quintuplet sixteenth notes? Or I dunno um... triple-dotted-undecuplet sixteenth notes? It's probably even a mixture of random beats, like something along the lines of e/8 (yes, e, as in the base of the natural logarithm).
Mega Man X2 has all sorts of crazy time stuff: a few extra beats in Bubble Crab, the crazy 3/4-7/8 section at the beginning of Crystal Snail, HEPTUPLETS in Overdrive Ostrich and (maybe) the Final Boss battle... even 'normal' songs like Wire Sponge were made to sound like they weren't normal.
Let's fight to computer!
After listening to Lethal Lava Land I can confidently say it's either in (however many beats are in the song)/4 or 1/4.
Seriously, I couldn't find any meaningful patterns in it, and I'm pretty sure it was just improvised around repeated gestures. The underlying quarter note, however, is pretty obvious.
O Zlda?
the quarter note is meaningless without some sort of reference. Considering the duration of each note of the main sitar-like instrument changes here and there as it repeats its note-5th-octave pattern, there's no real reference in this song for even a quarter note (what if it's a half or a whole? etc). I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I don't even know what the fuck this is

And most of it sounds like shit. Sad
Oh, bullshit. X2 has a great soundtrack. The onnly low point is the sample set, which was a clear downgrade from X1's samples.

X2's soundtrack is amazing. As a MM runner, I can't believe you just said that. Sad

Then again, I think X3's soundtrack is good too.

There are like four good tracks in Mega Man X2. The rest is garbage. Sounds like the composer was beating off when composing the music. The only one that is REALLY good is Sigma Stage 1-2. I like X3's soundtrack better. *jacks off to gravity beetle's theme*

Neither comes remotely close to X1's soundtrack, though.

All the Mega Man soundtracks are unmitigated tune-heavy pieces of rock crap. Except the .EXEs.

7/4-7 beats per measure.  It repeats every 7 pulses instead of 4.  So instead of counting "1, 2, 3, 4" you'll usually break it up.  Maybe "1-2-3, 1-2-3-4" for instance.  It has little to do with the actual sound of the music; The Beatle's "All You Need Is Love" has a melody in 7/4, and Pink Floyd's "Money" is 7/4.

Actually I think the time measure for "Money" is a very strange 17/18 (pretty sure it is). Got this off the Classic Albums series documentary on Dark Side of the Moon.
Let's fight to computer!
Technically it's in 21/8 because the eighth notes are swung, but it's always notated in 7/4.

Hey guys I was wondering what this song form mother 3 for N64's time signatures are:

I assume this is either a joke or plugging a song you like, but meh... common time with fermatas/ritardando employed.

Aside from /18 being unused, the drums' basic quarter and eighth note patterns wouldn't flow if there was an extra eighth/sixteenth in the measures.

A few years ago they did a concert in memory of George Harrison that featured one indian styled song which they openly described before playing as having nine-and-a-half beats to a measure. Not sure if they were simplifying things or if it's actually kosher to describe a song as 9.5/x instead of 19/x*2.

I believe bsidwell but I am not sure the underlying mechanisms that make a song, say, 21/8 instead of 7/4. I have a hard time seeing what the difference in 2/4 and 4/4 is supposed to be too. Although, I can follow why Led Zeppelin's Fool In The Rain is in 12/8 and not 4/4, so I dunno, maybe I'm not hearing the swing. If it's 21/8, then the delay on the guitar playing the Bm can be described as 16th note delay, which does fit better. (edit: or is it 16th triplets? meh)
