Hey Loopy I know some people who got their capture cards from you and I am very interested, as I do gameplay videos and reviews on my youtube channel. I know it may be awhile till you can send out more devices, but I am willing to pay whatever price and send you my 3DS. Do you have a skype or e-mail I could further contact you with?
Essentially, all I was asking is that since the 3DS XL is bigger, are you going to use the extra space for more wires and stuff for more features, or are you just going to do the same thing? I don't have any features in mind, I'm just wondering whether I want to wait for a 3DS XL capture card or just go with the regular 3DS one when you finish it.
Quits halfway
He responded and said there aren't any features he's unable to add because of space constraints, which implies that even if one were made, it wouldn't have additonal features. It'd be fine to go with a 3ds one.

What kind of features are you thinking of? Replacing the A Button by the R Button?
I mean, everything Audio and Video related stuff, have already been taken.
At least, that's what I think Loopy did.

3DS XL mother board

I was going to get a 3DS XL, but I don't really want to now. I might trade in my Black 3DS for a Red one, the Red 3DS looks cooler Wink
Also, does this record in 720p HD? Or just 480p?

The 3DS resolution is 400x240 and 320x240, making is theoretically 400x480, a far cry from HD. So if anything, that would be closer to 480p, though that's just weird to say with this custom resolution.
I don't know the exact details, but it would seem that HD would need some scaling circuit on the board which costs a lot of money and time and complexity to solder.

Well, I have a bit of a dilemma. My mum might get me a 3DS in a few days, but I don't know which version to get! (The XL is already out in my country) Don't know if I should get a regular 3DS for capturing, or an XL, since in my opinion, the 3DS touch screen is just too small. There's about a £40 difference ($62.90).
On a completely unrelated note, why does everyone seem to post at night? Grin

Yup, I was also afraid that my 3DS would never reach loopy due to the unreliable post system. It was hard and expensive enough to get it from Japan to Germany (fricken customs), so I was searching for like 1 month to find a shop or person that can install the device for me and that I can travel to. Finally found one that seems reliable and am hoping that my feeling turns out to be true :p
Since when is the german post system unreliable? Even if they were to lose a package (which never happened to me), you are really well insured.
Customs suck, but that is a problem in every country and it shouldn't be a problem for the capture card installation.

Didn't you read the last few pages? A new batch (well really the first) of 3DS capture boards is on it's way. So you are in luck there.

And at that point you can just use software on your PC to scale that video, for free.

Because I'm a Vampire!
Also get the 3DS XL and aquire mad soldering skills so you don't need to use the flat cable? Cheesy

Because I love to stay up late and I hate being up early, especially summers.
(Early is anything before 12:00 and late is up 03:00, maybe later.)

Is there still no disassembly of the 3DS XL? (the board from the front doesn't help much)
Man those sites got slow.

Yay found what I was looking for. ^^ http://blog-imgs-45.fc2.com/k/a/t/katsukity/IMGP1041.jpg
Actually looks like there is enough space for a capture board in the lower right corner. Fun. Smiley

That's not happening any time in the next 39.817 years, unfortunately.  Loopy said in the linked comment on this video that it would probably work with some rewiring: http://j.mp/P2HRbT. I would look at the video if you haven't already.
Yes, it might be possible to wire the capture board up to a 3DS XL.  It'd be ugly and awkward to use, there's no good place to mount the board.

Is the capture board still as big as the prototype or did you shrink it in the meantime? If it was as big as the DS capture board (or even slightly bigger) it should fit in the lower right corner here, I think.
Ofcourse you'd have to put the USB connector someplace else and wire it up, but that should be the least problem.

Well, we'll find out once you get one in a few of weeks! Wouldn't really matter if it was ugly, as long as it captures I'm happy, but what do you mean by "awkward"?

This is what the final board looks like.  It's about 50x50mm.  It could be made smaller if necessary, maybe 2/3 the current size.

Ah okay. Yeah in it's current form it won't fit there by the looks of it. 2/3 of the current size should fit nicely. Would be nice if the picture of the XL mainboard was high res. Guess we'll get one in the next few days. Smiley
Even if it doesn't fit you could theoretically do something like this:

From the looks of it the space should be there. That might actually make it possible to mount the USB connector at the spot I marked blue.

Ofcourse the question is if a completely new design for the XL would be worth it.

It'd probably be bolted onto the back case, board completely exposed with wires hanging out.  It'd be very fragile.

It'd fit nicely inside the battery cavity.  Dump the battery and make it strictly USB powered. Smiley

Grin Guess that is a possibility, if it is an exclusive capture 3DS.
But maybe you reduce the size to 2/3 in future revisions, it actually fits in the lower right corner, while still fitting in the back-case for the normal 3DS that you made. That would be a fun day. I like a challange and wiring all that crap in the 3DS XL would certainly be one. Grin

Btw. is the USB charge mod included in the flat cable or is there some extra wireing involved (in the normal 3DS version)?

I'm not so sure it fits, I need to take a closer look at it.  Katsukity (where the picture came from) said a board wouldn't fit in there, so I have to take his word for it for now.  It would also require some carving up of the plastic case, which I'm dreading.  The 3DS installation is actually easier for me than the DS board, because all the fine dremeling to get the board to fit is rather time consuming.  It might sound fun for you now, but you'll change your mind after doing it a few dozen times.

No, it isn't.  I haven't even tried doing a charging mod yet.

Yeah dremeling plastic, probably not the funest of activities. Just tell those lazy bums to install it themselfs? Grin (jk)

In it's current size the board sadly won't fit. That's pretty clear from the picture.
Did not realize that katsukity made those pictures herself.

Still would be nice to see how much space there actually is.
@katsukity
Could you make a higher res picture straight down (not at an angle, like these ones)? Then we could compare the size of empty spaces by comparing with the DS card slot. Smiley

Edit:
Btw. with 2/3 of the size this should work too: http://i48.tinypic.com/2zflhg4.png
Would have the added bonus that the shape isn't weird and the USB is directly attached to the board, so it could probably double as a capture board for the normal 3DS pretty easily.
Again, I'm doing this mostly for the fun of speculating what might be possible. I do not expect anybody to actually build it (though it would be fun in the far future Cheesy ).
Stand: Devil's Call in your Heart
can i place a preorder by now or are those not open yet? demand seems to be considerable and i don't want to be left out.
