Alrighty righty I have yet another question to ask regarding the software we'd be using to view the capture: You (loopy) said that the program will be able to capture .avi, but will you have the option to choose which codecs you want to use for video/audio? That would be good since then we could just use a good lossless codec and record sda quality runs straight from the program which i think everyone here would be content with

As it's on mine, it doesn't capture .AVI files at all.
Instead, you'll need to use HyperCam2, which does allow you to select codecs.
Quote from loopy:
I will provide a driver + software that you can use to view and record (to .avi) from the device.

That's what I was referring to specifically, so it sounds like it's going to be new software

Probably.
I only can't open the software at the moment, because I'm on OS X, right now.
But I need to get on Windows 8 later on today anyway, because of a Kirby Mass Attack review.
Yes, you can select the codec.  I suppose I can let you play with the software.  It should run, even though it'll be useless without hardware.  http://home.comcast.net/~olimar/DSCapture  There's an install guide here too that you can check out.  I'm still working on it but it's mostly finished.

In other news, I got a pile of boards in the mail today. Unfortunately, I have to track down another source for connectors.  The ones I ordered from a Chinese parts supplier were useless inferior copies.  U.S. sources don't keep em in stock, and the order time is 16 weeks out (hence turning to said Chinese supplier).  Hrmph.

very nice ! I have a few questions :
- when preorder will be available ?
- in the software, will it be possible to display DS in full screen (not just a window) ?
- does it works with a 3m usb cable ?

AniMoewzerz:
loopy's software results in an .avi file and allows you to use any of the codecs that you have installed on your pc. I'm currently testing one of the boards for him and using the lagarith lossless video codec which looks as you would it expect it to. however, as you know with anything lossless, the file sizes balloon up fairly quickly.

I'll try and post a few samples this evening if loopy doesn't mind.

- If it looks like there's enough demand that a preorder is needed, I'll do preorders.  I don't think that's a problem, yet...
- Not yet.  That's something I still need to add (full screen on one or 2 monitors).
- 3m cable, I don't know. I don't have one to test.  I can't imagine why one wouldn't work, though.

Oh yeah, the full screen is very handy.
Could you add it into the old Capture Device too?
If not, is the software for this one compatible with the old one?

I'm asking, because neither Visual C++ 2005, 2008, nor 2010 seems to be compatible with the used code.

The old device isn't compatible with this software.  I can update it to support your device, it shouldn't be too much trouble.  The old one was built with Visual C++ 6.0, btw.

More (stupid?) questions
- is there any "lag" added while displaying picture on PC ? Or what we see on DS and PC is similar at the same time ?
- audio and video are perfectly "synchronized" on PC ?
I didn't notice any lag when I created a few sample captures last night. I'll post some samples this evening using various codecs so that people can see the results.

what's a good place to use to upload the files since I know that mediafire and rapidshare are not preferred upload sites to use here.

Why wouldn't mediafire be a good one to upload to???

I guess you could use filedropper, filefront (I guess its gamefront now??), or megaupload jk megaupload is bad

I could have sworn that I read that SDA preferred not to use those sites (maybe I'm just going crazy Tongue

the demo loop for spirit tracks is pretty varied as is the one for new super mario bros.  I'll try and capture both with 3-5 different codecs and post them tonight.

edit: 21 sep 2011
I knew that I saw something somewhere here. it was about not using rapidshare or youtube
http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/dont_use_youtube_or_rapidshare_in_this_forum.html
here are the captures:
for spirit tracks, I captured the demo loop in cinepak (100% video quality), microsoft video 1 (100% video quality) and lagarith lossless
you'll see that other than the lossless, there is way too much tearing, artifacting and other video inconsistancies

the new super mario bros. was captured in lagarith lossless

I did do some captures with full frame option, but the file size ballooned way too big, too fast to post  (over 150MB for about 4 seconds worth of video/audio Shocked )

legend of zelda: spirit tracks (144MB)
http://www.mediafire.com/?4p41v3s38ve5xth

new super mario bros. (76MB)

Holy cow! This thread was not finding its way into my unread threads list. If you are still looking for guinea pigs loopy, then I am more than willing to help you out.

I don't think your New Super Mario Bros. video is working.
It doesn't work in QuickTime X, but VLC has a really hilarious error message:

Translated:
No usable decoding module
VLC doesn't support "LAGS" audio- or videoformat.
Unfortunately, you can't solve this issue.
Yes unfortunately VLC won't open anything encoded with lagarith.Chances are you weren't able to open the lagarith video with spirit tracks either. Something like SMPlayer will work though, although I'm not sure if there's a mac port for that software
I'll look at downloading a few more lossless codecs tonight and giving them a whirl.

huffyuv
http://neuron2.net/www.math.berkeley.edu/benrg/huffyuv.html

YUVsoft's losless
http://www.yuvsoft.com/2d-technologies/losless-video-codec/

UT video codec suite
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=143624
Huffyuv is a really good one as well, it just unfortunately doesn't compress filesize like lagarith does. I can't speak for the other ones, I've never heard of them before :0

I was able to get the huffyuv codec installed (using this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/video-conversion/2193-cannot-install-huffyuv.html), however it is returning an "error 6" when you try and capture in loopy's software after selecting that particular codec

here are 2 more samples using the Ut video codec (rgb ulrgb x64 setting) - new super mario bros. loop and kirby: mass attack (eos shooting mini-game) footage
http://www.mediafire.com/?5n2c57wp18w85jo
Hmm that's strange. Are you able to capture anything using huffyuv using any other program, or is this specific to loopy's capture program?
Hm.. looks like it's because of the format I'm passing to it.  Click on the "Configure..." button and enable RGBA compression. (I'm using huffyuv 2.1.1)

Could it be possible to add a special rendering effect (scanline) ? Just like the screen on DS.

Also, I think it would be good that the community choose an "official" or "recommanded" codec and adding it to the DS capture software.

From what I saw, UT codec looks better.
