DS Dictator
So I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit* and I am having a problem opening this up.

I think I might re-download the app as it was taken from the external harddrive during the XP days

* I am using 32-bit instead of 64-bit because some of the applications I use does not support 64-bit.

Update: Don't worry I got it to work now Cheesy

Update 2: http://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/DS
Updated this page slightly mentioning about the DS phat capture device and a side note at the bottom of the FIRST AND FOREMOST section. You are welcome to tweak it to make it sound better.

When I have time I will add a section of advanced avs scripts to make:

The triple screen layout - simple
The triple screen layout - advanced (changing the main screen)
A dual screen layout with the black bar in-between 2 screens.

CHOKES
First of all, thanks again to loopy for the device.

I've had a problem sometimes, though it doesn't happen often (once yesterday and once today, but both of those times I was pratically idle): sometimes, the upper screen on DS will freeze, but the lower screen and the sound will play normally. Also, the software will stop capturing both screens.
Has anyone else got this problem? I don't know if it's the DS problem, the cable or the device.

Edit: apparently, it's the device position, which I can partially move when the cable is connected.
If the upper screen freezes, it's a cable problem.
(screen cable, not USB)

let me know if you're unable to correct the issue yourself. I know that I put everything back together with tri-wing screws, but the proper screwdriver should be easily (and cheaply) accessible should you need to take the bottom shell off to re-seat the either of the cables. I don't remember having this issue when I tested the system, however I *did not* peel the backing from the double-sided tape of loopy's capture board and affix it to the inside of the ds, so there is a possibility that something shifted during shipping from me to you.

I updated the software and driver. (link)
Relevant changes:

- I'm using a generic WinUsb driver now. This avoids driver signing issues in newer Windows (>= Vista) so you don't have to go through all that nonsense of booting in Test Mode and self-signing your driver.

- I made some USB performance tweaks.  If you had issues with video skipping or corrupt frames then this should help.

Feedback is appreciated, good or bad.  Installing the new driver isn't required but you won't see much improvement using the old driver.  Also, I've updated the firmware so Windows automatically recognizes it as a WinUSB compatible device.  This won't affect most people (yet), but it means that Windows 8 supports it out of the box, no driver needed. New boards will ship this way, but I'll make a firmware updating app at some point, for those of you who already have a board.

It sounds nice, I'll try this evening, when I'm done with work for today.
Also:

In this video, I've got very notable hick-ups at the final lap of GCN Yoshi Circuit.
What I've also noticed, when doing the 5 Silver Star mission on Bob-Omb Battlefield in Super Mario 64 DS, I get like 400+ frame drops in one single minute, followed by an Error.
I've been playing around with the capture board for some time now and I'm still amazed Smiley
Booting with F8 to disable driver signatures wasn't that bad, but it's nice that the new drivers work without it too. It's also working on my Renesas/NEC USB3.0 ports now.

There were some minor frame drops (1-5 frames after 5-10 minutes) with the old drivers. So far (after 10 minutes Spirit Tracks opening) I've had no frame drop with the new drivers. Smiley
Yes
Thank you so much for the software update.  After performing the update I do not have any more video skips and the quality is fantastic.

What codec are you using Mr.K?

I still request a multi-segment recording feature to automatically split AVI files after hitting 4GB like you can do on FRAPs.

Yes
I've just been using full frames uncompressed and PCM for audio.  You can see the Contra 4 topic for a sample.  I ran that through Handbrake so it's still not full quality, but you should definitely be able to notice a difference.
This is long overdue, but I finally got some more time to play around with my board. A black triangle would sometimes flash on the top screen on the computer, but I opened my DS up and made sure the cable fit a bit more snugly and that cleared up just fine. My bad.

After that and grabbing the new driver, everything's been working great. Just fooling around with some video settings to see what works best, and I guess I need to grab a cable for audio.

Greenalink's splitting idea sounds good.

You can set up multi-segmenting in Vdub. Does the capture device work with vdub?

I think I'm going to just go ahead and try to buy one of these (assuming it works with vdub), do I need to get my own DS Phat first, or does loopy have bunches to spare?
This device does not work with vdub (or any recording software that uses directshow), but rather uses its own recording/viewing application that works splendidly.

Also, glad to hear that I don't need to F8F8F8F8F8 any more with the new driver.

Really? I just tried Vdub, it worked for me.

I tried it and it does not. Mind you, they mean viewing the device for capture through vdub, not viewing a video recorded from your program in vdub.

Umm... yes, it does.  Look in the help file on screen capture.  Go to capture mode, and choose Device -> screen capture.
It's not a WDM video capture device like a webcam but any software that can do screen recording should work (vdub, FRAPS, Camtasia, ...)

While it does have multi-segment recording, I still had tough time sorting out the sound to sync perfectly without tweaking the video/audio.
A small note is that the frame drop counter is inaccurate on Vdub, whenever the actual DS Capture app freezes, the Vdub frame drop counter does not increase BUT it does affect the actual video during playback.
I still get some frame drops with the new drivers. The avi seems to be cut off at exactly 4 GiB and I can't open it :/ VirtualDub crashes with an out-of-bounds memory access violation (in module lagarith). I've got some >4 GiB avi files that work without problem. I guess they've got multiple 4 GiB video parts put together in one file. Fixing that would be really appreciated.

Btw the frame drops happened at two points, first it dropped 1 frame and a few minutes later it dropped another 30 frames at once.

Attachment:
Dropping frames is not unusual, it's pretty much impossible to avoid it completely.  It'll happen when your system hiccups for any reason.  OS decides to organize the HD ... some device wants urgent attention, a scheduled event is triggered... could be anything.  There's not much ram for buffering video on the board, so if the OS isn't ready to read it, it's lost.

Greenalink, you'll have to use avisynth to stitch the videos back together in vdub or you get sound desync. If it's on the original files, it's going to be +400ms at each split, so you could -400 before stitching it. Also, check the frame inserts counter, that's where inserts from not writing fast enough come in. Dropped frames are from when it's capturing too fast and needs to drop them to make 29.97fps. Don't worry about frame drops at the start, it'll usually drop a couple and it won't matter, if you get them later though, try going to capture -> disk I/O and turning up how much RAM you're using. Chunk size should be 4/8/16 depending on what you find works best for your hard drive. Chunk number should make it add up to 128-512MB of RAM. I use 16x16 for 256MB of RAM and don't run into those issues anymore. Like loopy said, the system can hiccup for any reason and drop frames, but having a ton of RAM available will give a larger buffer to prevent actual drops.

Still working on it.  I made a version that splits files, but wasn't happy with it because there's a gap in time between files.  I'm moving to a library that doesn't have the 4GB limit instead, but it's taking a while to switch over.

I tried to use the new App (new drivers didn't want to be installed), and I've got weird colours.
Pink became purple, yellow became green, etc.
So I've switched back the the App from October, which displays normal colours.
Ah, right.  I forgot the RGB order is reversed on yours.  I'll fix it in the next release.
Hello there loopy,

have you made any progress on the 3DS capture device lately? Didn't find anything regarding that but would really appreciate some info!

Greetings~
