Could you allow me to answer this?
That's what we've done with our 3DS.

My brother has sent a 3DS via Play-Asia to Loopy, he modded it, and sent it over to us.
He didn't used a 'special package', just the same box, as Play-Asia has sent to him.

oh, that's good to know. then i'll save additional money for that.

This is a great project. Really looking foreward to it. Don't know yet, if I would be willing to mod my 3DS. But regardless, the speedruns done with this by talented people will be amazing. Smiley

I just have one question, loopy. It looks like you could fit the board under the normal back-plate, if you cut a corresponding part out of the plastic it corrently sits on. Then you could replace the charger-port with a micro-USB port (or mini, since that is about the size of the charger-port), thus making the 3DS basically look like a stock model. The DS could be charged either through a USB charger or USB cable connected to a computer.
Do you think that would be doable and/or practical?

Edit: On a second look, I probably overestimated the thickness of that plastic quite a bit and presumably there won't be any room under there at all, so even with a whole it wont be enough space...

Your Edit is right, there's no space inside.
That's why he decided to let it stick out.
But don't mind, with a Battery Cover on it, it's more ergonomic.

Yeah I overestimated the thicknes of the plastic. I thought if you were to cut a board-sized whole in it it might work. But obviously that not enough...

Anywho, any news on this?

It is a solution to make newly if a case is necessary.

Slowking, you mean, the inside?
That's where the Main Board is directly placed in.
Removing that, will make everything fall off. /steroid
The only News I've heard is, that the USB-only Board had Hardware problems, which made everything about this quiet.

Katsukity, how do you want to create plastic, without a 3D Printer?
Katsukity
It is easy to make it if I spend money.
I make case data by CAD and make a metal mold.
I do not have the exact cases with the 3D printer.

I meant cutting a whole in the inner plastic, that is the size of the capture board, to fit it in. The new capture board is so small, that you won't run into any danger of the mainboard falling out. But like I said, that would probably still not be enough space.

The Board might be small, but the ports definitely aren't.
Even the Mini USB Port is sticking fully out.
In the end, by removing the inner plastic, will still have the USB Port stick out.

Photo:

In case of the USB+HDMI Model, the Charger Port will need to be removed for the USB Port, as well as the Cartridge Slot and the Stylus Holder for the HDMI Ports.
In case of the USB-only Model, the Cartridge Slot will have to be removed.

The DS Phat has this possibility to be installed inside of it, because it has plenty of wasted space inside, unlike the 3DS.
I'm beginning to think that you didn't read my post. Wink
I talked about replacing the 3DS's charger port with the USB port.

Don't you want to be able to charge up your 3DS?
Besides, the Cable can't reach a that faraway spot, and I won't recommend to glue down the Board onto the Battery.
You could easily charge it with the power delivered over USB. In fact, I use a USB power adapter cable to charge mine.
At that point you'd nearly have to remove the whole 3DS motherboard.  Also, as YamiHoshi said, you'd basically have to remove the cartridge slot to fit the USB port where the charger port currently is.  I'm amazed and excited for what Loopy is working on, I don't mind a little extra thickness on the bottom of the 3DS. (I use the extended battery right now anyway, so I'm used to it)  Can't we just be happy with and very thankful for what Loopy makes, instead of trying to revise it before it's even finished?

Guest, you do notice, that your USB Power Adapter doesn't send/receive any other data, than just power?
If you want to Capture video, and Charge at the same time, you'll require to solder some more wires, than you already have to.
This has been seen with the DS Capture Board, and the same thing should be done with the 3DS Capture Board.

More than that, you'll need to modify the entire 3DS, to move the Battery to another spot.

First of all let me say, I still think this wouldn't work, because the board with the chips on it would be too thick. So at this point this is a purely theoretical exercise.
But I don't know why you would have to move anything with the idea I had spoken about.

I made a picture to better convey what I meant:

Basically I meant cutting out that plastic, then making a board that is the same shape and putting it into the place of the plastic you just cut out. (you would glue it to the gameslot, so that the hole and the PCB line up)
The USB port would be on the underside of the board.
Ofcourse that would need two more wires. But those could be integrated in the flat cable. I would assume it can take one Ampare.

Alternatively you could just solder the USB port directly to the 3DS's board, where the charger port is now (ofcourse would need checking if the pins actually match up) and wire the data ports to the capture-board. But that seems to be the slightly less convenient method.

I don't see a problem with not being able to use the normal 3DS charger anymore. For quick charges you could use a generic 1 Ampere USB charging cable and while you are captureing the 3DS gets automatically charged, slower than with the charging cable, but still more than enough so that it will never run out.

So that's what you mean?
I don't know about the possibilities, in this case. (Would Loopy be able to do that?)

Also, nice Purple 3DS, you've got there!
Katsukity
It is nice 3DS!
Nice purple color!

It's a picture I found on the internet. It was the the only one that showed a 3DS with the battery cover off full frontal. So I did not care that the color balance was off. Wink

Like I said PCB + chips would probably still be too thick. What should get you down to the desired thickness would be a flex PCB like this http://www.global-manufacturer.com/china-30726/flexible-pcb.html . Combining PCB and flat cable basically.
But again that's probably overkill for this project. Also I'm not really sure if that would be a good idea for a handheld. Don't know how sturdy these things are.
Katsukity
It is nice flat cable!
Good idea!

New Firmware Test (thanks Loopy):

(For some reason, I keep misspelling "Loopy" as "Loops").
Nice it is really coming along. Smiley

Btw. Loopy is the one Filb uses here one of yours or is somebody else working on a capture device?

Rating the speed and everything, it definitely looks like it's the same device.
So digital audio out is planned for this? That's interesting.
Yes.  It's not working yet, but it's wired up to capture digital audio so it will be supported eventually.
