Alright, I've made my decision. I'll beat my WR time with Curly and tweet it to the devs to prove a point that Ninja isn't the one that had problems, if they worried about the new online leaderboards being unfair. Let's bring the cheese strats!
How about you don't do that and also stop accosting the devs on Twitter for altering their game back to the way they intended it to be...? None of us are entitled to them making the game how we want it, it's their game. Nobody is stopping you from playing an old patch, but we'll have to all decide together whether or not BrokenNinja% will be a category.
Yeah, sorry about that. I can sometimes get a bit heated up when I've put some time into learning something and then it gets changed and I have to learn it again. I still disagree with the devs' choice (mostly due to other characters having similar abilities) but there's nothing I can do about it anymore since they've decided to change it.
I'm still going to get that Curly time out there just for show. One weird thing I noticed though: Different characters take different amounts of time in the "score screen" after every level. Curly is like 2-3 seconds slower than Ninja. So Ninja gets an automatic advantage over every character.
Screw it. I'll abandon my tricks and re-write my routes. I want to have my name up there for the legit Ninja% too, even if it means making some levels less cool.
If the community wants to there's nothing from stopping people from using previous game versions if they want to exploit those glitches - this is done in practically all PC speedgames if advantageous glitches are patched in later versions.
Personally I don't care much for ninja%, but I'm not going to stop anyone or call their run less legitimate because they use a previous version. That said, I think the glitched run is gimmicky and less entertaining to watch than one that doesn't abuse the infinite walljumps.

StoK, that's a really good any% run. What final time do you predict you would land on if you got a perfect run?
Also, completely irrelevant to anything posted above, but you can use alternate Aban colors in any% without having unlocked the palette swap option simply by going to your "main" save, selecting Aban, changing colors, backing out to the save selection and lastly creating a new save. Pretty neat if you get sick of his usual yellow-brown-ish attire.
So, try a 2nd run for setting split, but my game crashes during the boss fight... But here is my times : http://puu.sh/9xFmC/40d75ef161.png
Sub45 will be easy, even sub40. I need to practice A LOT on : 3-5 , 4-3 , 5-1 , 5-2 , 5-3 , boss fight, and a bit on 5-4, 4-1 route and almost all levels btw.
I didn't have any problems post-patch when I did some glitchless Ninja routing.
Speaking of glitchless Ninja runs, I think it'll be alright. The first two worlds and 5-3 will become rather bland and straight-forward but the rest of the run is still impressive enough to be preferred over the old version. 4-5 can be done just as fast, 4-2 became even more technical and the boss is actually a challenge, if you want the best cycles.
Actually I have a lot of problem with the boss, the fifth (last) hit seems to be harder than the 4 hits before... It always miss, I don't really understand.
Today I decided that I'll get my bottom splits recorded for the new Ninja% and I got 17:41. Should I even upload this even though it's technically a pretty solid run? I died like 5 times but I was still pretty fast.
EDIT: I decided that I'll pass on uploading this one since I know I can do better than this. Sub 17 could be called a WR and would be worthy of uploading, right?
I'll get a better run in the next 2-3 days. Aiming for sub 17. If I don't get it, I'll just upload this one but this was my first actual attempt at a complete Ninja% run after the patch so I'm sure I can beat this. Besides, I don't want to reveal my strats just yet until I've mastered them, you know?
The OP suggested to have separate categories for each character, but after beating Ukampa once, the keys don't need to be recollected and put into the doors again. Wouldn't that make any subsequent runs more of an NG+ thing? I don't really know if I'd consider my run legitimate, as a lot of time is cut off by not having to deal with the keys in Ukampa and items in Antarctica. Also, not having to get the key of serpentis again. I guess non-Aban% runs would at least expect you to have the key of Serpentis though, because you can't unlock antarctica for other characters until you beat the boss of it.
I notice that other runs seem to do the same thing, which makes me feel a bit more confident, but figured I'd ask to be sure. Y'know, because traditionally, a speedrun starts from a blank slate and all.
That said, it's nothing special but I did a 44:02 Curly% Ukampa+Antarctica (NG+?) run, if you guys care to see it, it's uploaded here:
(I get a bit salty in a couple of spots, namely when I burn about 5 minutes on sloppiness.)
Nice job Virus for the first real Antarctica run. People haven't really wanted to pick up on Antarctica runs yet sadly. I personally prefer to run Ukampa and leave it at that since it's more about optimized routes and little tricks instead of being consistent at hard levels, but to each their own.
Regarding your question, everything should be collected in advance for every other character except Aban since getting characters over and over again is very inconvenient if you want to practice the runs.
Un-related stuff: I'd really like if other people running Ninja would post their runs, even if they're not amazing by your definition. I'd enjoy watching other Ninja runs and it would keep all of us motivated if there were multiple people posting vids instead of just me. :3
Has anyone tested whether Hourglass works with this game? A TAS would be amazing, but I can't get the game to launch via Hourglass, possibly because I'm running Windows 8 x64 instead of windows 7/vista x86.
I streamed 5 hours of Ninja% speedrunning today and improved my routes, tech skill and my PB time as well. 17:07 is the current record but with enormous mistakes. Sub 17 is right around the corner.
So many frustratingly precise things on the Ninja route made me drop many potential sub 17 runs and the escape RNG made the PB run at least 7 seconds slower than it could have been.
To other Ninja% runners: Please tell your twitch.tv account or YT account here and post those runs! I'll definitely check each and every one out and I should be able to give tips too.
Umm... nice. I streamed for 20 mins and got a pretty solid Ninja% run. 16:00 sharp. One costly mistake, one early reset and a couple of safe strats but otherwise a fairly flawless run.
TEH URN!
And with this run being done, I'm temporarily retiring from running this game to completely focus on running Shovel Knight starting this Thursday, at least until someone challenges this run. I hope people pick it up and try to beat my time but if not, I'm happy with keeping this record.
i'm gonna post this here, since someone in my stream chat asked if it was faster and i thought, nah, no way, people would have tried that. and then i tried it and went god damnit how did i miss that
it's significantly faster to advance stages by exiting to map & reentering than it is by just hitting A. dude only has to walk to the center of the stage complete screen instead of off to the right, and the map has helpfully already advanced to the next stage.
