Sunder, yeah, I figured that Curly would be the best character for pure speed. Curly runs are far from easy-mode though and you can do some very cool shortcuts, so I wouldn't mind someone doing these. I might do them at some point myself too. But for now, I'll focus on Ninja as he is much more technical and fun while still being almost as fast.
Wow, Caerulius, your strats improve my time significantly. Smiley
But at 2-4 you can do the long gap by using LJ. It doesn't seem to make a difference, but still... Wink
And there we have it! Ninja% run in 16:29! http://www.twitch.tv/eiiitti/c/4468673

Can we please make Ninja runs a thing now? It's so much fun!

By the way, any news on the 1001 Spikes IRC channel? It would be very useful for discussing strats etc. Someone who knows anything about IRC please make it.
Very nice!

And why shouldn't we make a Ninja% category?
Regarding some people's concerns about the wall climb technique, I personally think that it should be kept in the game since 1. It adds a whole new layer to Ninja% runs. 2. Makes the Ninja runs considerably different from Aban runs more than just making it have faster cycles and 1 or 2 niche walljump tricks. If people consider Ninja runs to be "too easy", which they totally aren't, they can run default Aban runs or even pick another character altogether. It's not like this game is going to run out of characters any time soon. Cheesy

Some stuff about that run of mine, I failed hard on like 4 levels but other than those, it was pretty close to what I had planned. Sub 16 is definitely possible, sub 15:30 may be possible with some serious practice and practically no flaws. I'm so glad I got my 4-5 route performed nearly flawlessly on the run, because that took me long to plan and practice.

The bottom line is that the game wasn't made for a small group of speedrunners to play, and an exploit that changes a characters intended uses is likely to be fixed and balanced for what the designers want it to be. Appealing to anybody in here really won't change anything, I like the one-wall jump a lot but again it's not intended and it's not designed for me.
if you're worried about a patch changing a trick, then make a backup & just revert if it gets changed.
True that Sunder. Although, it wouldn't be the first time that the devs consider certain glitches/techniques beneficial for speedrunners and thus won't change it.

Even if the devs change it, people could just run the unpatched version to play the fastest version.
2-5 in 19.90 with aban. this took a little while to get, but I was figuring out some mechanics as I went.

i'm learning the game, will post any interesting ILs if/when I do more. I really wanna save one more cycle on 3-1 and 3-5 lol :<
Everyone wants to save a cycle in 3-5. It might be possible with Ninja but I don't see Aban getting much faster there.
i haven't seen a faster 4-3 route than this, so I thought I'd post it.

the ending was kinda sloppy, i've since beaten this time. still a decent demonstration tho. i have no idea why the stomper waits an extra cycle before falling through, but it does that consistently.

Hi,

I started this game since a few days, after saw it on YT and thought "I want to speedrun this". I beat Ukampa yesterday, but could you tell me how many times did you finish the game before begin speedurnning ?
I think I'll begin with an any% run, don't have the ninja atm.

Edit : Also, as I'm new in speedrunning, I don't know how I can get a timer like in Sunder's video when i'm playing... Anyone could help me ?
Akala, finished the game twice with Aban, got the ninja character and finished the game twice before starting to make the optimal routes for each level and practicing them. I'm biased but I'd like to see more people attempt the Ninja% run. :3

The timer most people use for speedruns is a program called WSplit. Google it and download it. It's fairly easy to figure out and looks very neat.

By the way, if you're starting to speedrun, it would be recommended that you record your gameplay (streaming it is the best way in my opinion since other people can give critique and tips too) so if you happen to get a good time, you can prove it. Rewatching your own runs is also beneficial to see where you make your mistakes and what you need to practice more.

Thanks, I'll google for WSplit and how to stream.

I will try to finish the game one more time, and practicing for shortcuts/tricks.
Also, what is needed to unlock the ninja character ?

Edit : Just watwched your ninja run, seems a bit harder and more tricky than a regular run with Aban. Great job !
Glad you liked it Akala!

You need like 30k coins for the Ninja character. Just complete the game with some random extra character and you get enough coins for it. You could also just edit your save file with notepad to give yourself 999999999 money to buy everything if you just want to speedrun.

Btw, use OBS for streaming and link your twitch page here when you make the account.

Hey guys!

Could you tell me your personal best in 3-2? It tried to find a good route today, but because of the platform cycles I could only make it in 41.23
Still, I think there may be better routes.

Edit: Sorry, I'm talking about any% without the skull.

And here it is: My current route in 3-2. I'm sure there is a way faster route.

So here is my twitch : http://www.twitch.tv/akalamiamiam

Currently trying to stream 1001spikes+Wsplit together, but can't see Wsplit

Don't why and how I fixed it, but I fixed it !

So apparently they're "fixing" Ninja today. I'll try routing the game for shuri-jump-less Ninja but if it's not fun enough, I'll stick to the old version and run that. Everyone make your backups if you want to run the fastest Ninja!

Apparently they're going to have online leaderboards as the carrot for people to update. Speedruns need footage for proof anyway and no leaderboard in any game is immune to being hacked, especially not the ones in indie games.
I guess I'll have to make an open Dropbox for the pre-patch Ninja files or something to let new people run it too. Darn devs for not realizing the difference of a game-breaking glitch and a depth-increasing glitch. It's not like your average player will ever stumble upon this or learn to use it properly.

Here's a picture of my monologue where I listed my initial thoughts on how the post-patch Ninja run will work compared to the pre-patch one: http://prntscr.com/3tg2c5

The run will stay mostly the same, with the major exceptions being 4-1 (at least 5, maybe even 10-ish seconds slower, depending on walljump's capabilities.), 4-2 (15 seconds slower unless some magic is invented) and 5-1 (no more skipping the run-killer RNG flames and the precise jump. 4-6 seconds slower)

Some stages that will be downgraded into Aban stages (turning a couple seconds slower and losing the Ninja-tech): 1-5, 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 5-1, 5-3 and possibly the boss too.

EDIT: Gratz StoK for getting the best any% run thus far!
My best for any% so far is 19:43, although there is definitely room for improvement. I know I can save 10 seconds on 5-3 with a different route, but I don't have it consistent yet. With a perfect run I could probably get sub 19 with the fastest routes I know atm.

To run or not to run ?
Am I the Only one to not get to pass level 2-5 consistantly ?
GG man !

I just tried to make a run, but had to stop at 5-1, I really need more practice on world 4 and 5. I aim for a sub1 before July, sub 40-45 before september.
Alright, I've made my decision. I'll beat my WR time with Curly and tweet it to the devs to prove a point that Ninja isn't the one that had problems, if they worried about the new online leaderboards being unfair. Let's bring the cheese strats!
