Xsnaw, aka XAlphawaves has posted on his Goon Honcho video that he plans(planned) to do a single segment for this game. I don't know when this was though, or if it is still "happening," tbh I think he wrote that in mid September when in fact I actually had started speed running this in late July, though I didn't get into SDA(thank you Silmaranza) with it until early October. I probably beat them to the punch. I know he is registered to this site(under what name I have no idea, but I would really like to get a hold of him again). If he is speed running this I really wish he would say something though.

-I am not using the PAL version nor could I. I am using the NTSC copy, its the only one available to me and that's the one that PSN offers as well. So most definitely there would be 2 categories for this if someone were to submit their own PAL run: PAL and NTSC. For PAL, that extra screen length is just waaaay to handy in this kind of game, you can see it in the video's below, a whole extra cm on each side(The size of the forum videos mind you).  The camera is zoomed out another ~50% making it super easy to line up sequence jumps that would otherwise be difficult to set up(examples Lost caves, the enemies in the forest levels). A good example is enemies with random positions and a few tricks such as in Canopy Village that I would die to have that for.  Xsnaw's Goon Honcho run is slower due to the PAL, I have been studying the differences between the 2 for a few days. After my results I really think that PAL and NTSC are 2 completely different playing fields for this. Now its just time to test PS2 vs PS3 before I finally figure out were  to resume my run, the days I have not been working on it are sure to make me play better though.

-Below are 2 examples, the first is Xsnaw's PAL Goon Honcho World Record video and there's mine, using the disc on a PS3. I did the exact same run in the exact same fashion, but mine always came out ~0:48.500 instead of ~0:55.142, I replicated this 4 times in under 20 tries(I think 16 or 17 tries, the first 2 times took 5 tries each).

-He definitely was looking into speed running this game, he had 7 lives, you should have that many at that point with the same amount of hearts. I have 5 lives because I "BORNFREE" cheated and ran there from a level 7 password. I really wish I knew if he was still running this the suspense is killing me, he has been impossible to track down, probably due to his internet. I'd give one of my legs to actually have a live discussion with him(not a joke). I need to find XAlphawaves that badly.

Will there be separate categories of this game for NTSC and PAL?? That's what I am wondering now. The differences are very clear in that last post and I think PAL is easier to play. All this time I accounted my time differences to his video for being run on a diff console when in fact, it just has to do with what 2 versions.

What circumstances would a PAL run of this game overwrite a NTSC? I read up a lot on the rules and there was even crazy talk of a "conversion method." For every minute in the PAL version it will be ~0:52.5 seconds in the NTSC though. This conversion method seemed unconfirmed and the thread was even locked I believe, figured I would ask someone that has been on this site a long time if any of that is in fact true.

-Confirmed solid difference between PSN copy vs. The disc. The screen resolution is thinned in the PSN version, making it almost box like creating like a 3.5:3 ratio rather than a 4:3. SO I will be using the disc now. The disc's resolution is identical on both the PS2 and the PS3.
-Confirmed time difference between PAL and NTSC versions of Pandemonium. The NTSC version is ~7.5 faster for 1 minute on the PAL(NTSC 0:52.2/PAL 1:00)
-Unconfirmed differences between times from disc play on PS2 vs PS3.

-I really want to switch this into: "SDA Forumn Index" >> "Planning">> "Older Consoles" If a moderator says no, cuz I mean I agree it sounds silly to waste time, I do think it may get more attention there, lol I know stupid idea.

I can answer one of the questions. There has been at least one run (The OOT European Version SS) on the site where the PAL version was played so much better and faster in terms of time beating the game that it replaced the NTSC version. So. if the PAL version is superbly optimized in terms of final time and playing ability that it surpasses an NTSC run, then the PAL can overwrite the NTSC.  Sorry I can't help more than that. I am not familiar with Pandemonium but good luck.

Took another break, got mild Starcraft II addiction, nothing serious. I have been taking stuff out of later levels, here  is a list of them and how they have changed over the past few days. I only remove time saving tricks as a last resort, and I would very much prefer to attempt them the hard way for a month or 2 before making a decision to nerf the level further, but that time has come:

Burning Desert-Found 1 simple trick that removed the luck based integrity, this level should never end my runs ever again
Canopy Village-Removed the expectation that I will abuse the slime perfectly from the snail right after the first checkpoint. Also removed an insane jump at the end of the level involving the web+fly bounce, did not find a way around the 5% chance that the goon will not line up below Nikki at the animal gate at the drop down, looks like something I will always have to deal with.
Soldier Barracks-Found an easier way to do the last room in Soldier Barracks: when I am climbing the lumber pieces its now important to remember to head straight for the top-middle platform only using the saws instead of the hanging lumber pieces because they have a good chance to propel you straight into the goon on the top platform, preventing you form saving 5 seconds at the beginning of the next level.
Dragoon Skyfort- This level is very very hard, and its tough to know what to take out, so I decided to focus around the flying torpedoes and removing any tricks that involved me dodging them because their positions are luck based. Next I have really slowed down the end of this level, there's some fire, a lot of opportunities to fall, and I need to not get hurt at all. Still a pretty tough level, definitely one of the top 3 hardest.
Cloud Citadel- If I still have ice from Dragoon Skyfort, the intentional damage part can now be skipped entirely by just freezing the first whirlwind at the indoor part and double jumping to the next tier. Also slowed down the end of this level significantly due to the high risk of falling and losing a full minute.
Efreet Palace- This is a difficult level, removed the sling jump off the ice platform before the spherical wind tunnel that separates the 2 halves of the level. Also removed any reliability on double jumps in the wind streams right before the end of the level, its nearly impossible to time double jumps here but it saves a lot of time.
Frozen Cavern- Removed dependability for a few crazy jumps in the first minute of the level, I can't rush here but I will still try one of them but if it doesn't happen its not the end of the world. I actually did increase the speed of the end of this level on the most deadly part(The wind jumping with bombs w/ deadly fall) but only because I figured out how to do it correctly, I must come out of this level with fire, very important.
Storm Temple- Removed a small skip in part 2/4(The climbing part) in which I super jumped up through the opening of the 2 platforms. The end of this level has stayed the same since the Fargus run and is very easy to perform with practice but does feel a bit like murder if you fail it Sad . This will be a very interesting to level to watch me do in sequence but its actually a very easy level compared to a few of the earlier ones.

Due to a few things beyond my control, 1 being a medical condition, I have not gotten much done in the past few weeks and I am unsure when that's going to change. Need to see a doctor soon. Long story short its affecting my mental health more than the physical aspect of it. The run is not on hold, but I am at this time struggling to actually accomplish anything and it has nothing to do with the difficulty of the game. I play this game for 30 mins,I get a headache, and even taking 4 days off this game didn't fix that, I would tell you what's wrong with me but eh..

I went from getting level 1-9 attempts every night to not being able to get past level 4 in several weeks. Nothing has changed except a little pickiness in level 1. With a lot of practice over many months I may now have a shot at doing the 2nd area in Skull Fortress just like the TAS. No guarantees but it has happened on accident quite a lot over the past few nights, but to actually rely on that in the actual run at this point is still sketchy, it all comes down to how you do 2 jumps within a 1 second time frame. I will explain everything once I get my 2nd to last video up but again, medical setbacks.

I have spent my down time trying my best to help other people get started on their runs(or at least try to create a foundation for somebody that decides to start it later), one of them is doing quite well now I think.
Sad to hear that. You were making great progress and your level of gameplay was really good.

I hope you can overcome your health problems. But if taking a pause of this game (or gaming in general) helps you, than by all means do it! No one should jeopardize their health for a hobby.

I would go into detail what happened but its not something I felt like sharing, getting sick was bad but what it ended up doing to me in the long run was way worse. I think I am gonna try again tonight(If I'm not too tired, a common side effect). I spent a lot of my off time playing some "underrated games." One of which I did put in the request thread. Treasures of the Deep, Jersey Devil, Okage etc(nobody has run these?). Yea I probably shouldn't have played any games at all but....its impossible for me to do so Tongue was still relaxing since it wasn't speed running.

In addition to medical condition I described earlier, there's something else that came to my attention over spring break. Dur, I have been playing way to many video games lately, just getting in front of a TV for 10 minutes is enough to give me some serious headaches/migraines. I think I need to take a little while off of this run and stay away from my TV. The weather is nice, do some fishing etc.

The good news is I know exactly how I want to do the run at this point(and its not going to disappear from memory) and depending on how many errors I get up to the last 6 levels, I still think sub 40:00 is entirely possible to accomplish in the SS. I would never abandon this run under any condition, I just need to stop for a little while(2 weeks) for a few very good reasons, I will be hanging around the site and paying close attention to a few other runs, and in 2 weeks I will resume this run.

The hardest part of this run has been figuring out how to get through the levels in the fastest way possible, and then slowly taking things out of the run to make it doable in a SS. Now that all that is done and I am sure that I can get attempts past Goon Honcho the way I have it set up I just need a break to refresh my focus.

I got back into this game tonight for about 30 mins(didn't want to do too much). I actually proceeded to look up how to rip music soundtracks from PS1 games, I got the entire Jersey Devil one, never been fully released on youtube. I also put this one in my computer only to find the wierdest thing, its music is actually compressed somewhere not obvious. I opened up a folder called "Jesters" that had literally over a thousand useless sounds in it....like I am trying to figure out if this was Burke Trieschmann(The man responsible for this games music), or someone else but these sounds are not in the game nor do they sound like they would be in any game... there are a few tiny pieces of music like I noticed a few seconds of level 3 but..... ehhh wtf I am scratching my head here and still looking for the music lol.  Time to grab all my "rare" games and upload the music to youtube, the Pandemonium soundtrack has been fully uploaded by a gentlemen named SMWHacker82.

I was honestly wondering(not debating on doing), if it was actually possible to segment this game because of its odd password system. The facts of loading a game from a password are:
-Resets points to 0
-Restores all health to full(this is the red herring here for a speed run)
-Retains powerup
-Retains lives(death abuse does not exist)

Some people were talking of segmenting this game however a few others were basically saying it didn't make any sense.
IkomaSoji if you're reading this I largely talk to myself here. Tongue
Jump, Gypsy, Jump!
Haha, Yeah, I am. It sounds like it wouldn't be too much of a problem to segment via password, points won't matter, just comes down to if the life thing will be a problem or not I guess.

Basically I have had very little time to work on this run on my quest to hook this up via PS2. Some recording issues came up that prevented me from doing anything. Had I just started this run I would have kept playing but when your this deep into a run its just too painful to imagine getting the actual run done and not recording it. Smiley That's why I haven't been playing.

-Found solution to composite recording
-Unable to resume run atm due to the inability to record. I have some real life stuff going on concerning my brother and I am nearing the end of programming course, pretty stressful stuff.
-Planning on resuming run early next month(Get something in the mail). I cant wait to finally compare my old times on this new console. This down time separates everything I have learned to what I am now shooting to be THE run I end up submitting to SDA. Hopefully I start producing those Dragoon Skyfort/ under 50 second goon honcho SS attempts again with all this stress gone. I was practicing this game every night for 7 months straight. I plan to start bringing this back into overdrive, and I will most likely start by producing that tri-segmented run with absolutely no errors so that I can calculate my error time. I am curious what a PS2 time will yield, previously my segmented times were running right under 40 minutes on the PS3. With a little bit of errors on a PS2 the SS time should easily go below 40 minutes so I may need to set the goal lower.
Obsessicus Parrotus
I can record anything now except PC in SDA quality, now I am just debating whether I want the run on PS2 or PS3. PS2 loads levels faster, PS3 gets through the levels faster once the levels are loaded. Overall PS3 seems to be faster by 2-3 seconds per minute with the load times included before and after a level. The problem is no matter how many times this turns out to be true, it doesn't sound right. I filmed Acid Pools, Fungus Grotto, and Goon Honcho identically and there was a clear difference between these, PS3 was always a few seconds faster. I could feel the extra hang time on the PS2 compared to the PS3.

There is a small chance I won't continue with this game. I will see how it goes, but I certainly want to finish it. If I do give this up I will at the very least announce it, and upload some of my strats for a future runner. Its a shame how this happened and its been several months since I have touched this game. I largely blame Diablo 3 for sucking me in, inferno is taking a lot longer than I expected.

I am done with Diablo 3 it has a really bad setup for people that want to go through inferno quickly, but my heart is out to he brave souls that are actively working on the game on SDA, and I have looked at that thread a lot. Anyway, there are going to be HELLA attempts at this over the next few weeks to make sure I have put forth every effort I possibly can with this game. Let's hope I can pull this together, keep your fingers crossed if you're reading this. thumbsup

One of the biggest motivators that came up to stop the run, was the fact that, I have never met anyone irl that has heard of this game. Its not talking about speed running that turns people off, its just they expect you to be playing a game they've played. If I were talking about gears of war or crash bandicoot they would understand. Even on the web the pickings are slim for anybody that's actually picked this game up. I am not very passionate about this game compared to other games I would like to speed run, and some of those games have even been abandoned. I sigh with a dismayed grin on my face as I write this because I unfortunately feel I won't ever quit this. I want to see if someone replies to this though, it would give me a little hope as I feel as if I am the last person that cares about this game. Or at least some opinions.
Obsessicus Parrotus
Well I just tried, level 1 was still strenious, but it always was, after 10 tries I got through it. I was just able to perform the next few levels up until the slide part of lost caves perfectly after not touching it for so many months. If lost caves can still be done in a few tries it might be easier to get back on course than I expected. But the point isn't if I can produce the actual run after several months of practice(because I am sure I can), its if I enjoy it or not and I don't , I really don't anymore, it kind of hurts to just pickup the game again. Were still in the "maybe" zone. For now grouping the levels in 3s is still doable, so I will start with that.

I haven't touched levels 16-Boss3 in at least 5 months, which is giving me bad vibes. I was supposed to stay on top of those levels even though I wasn't actively getting real SS attempts in on them. If you are just now reading my posts for this game Cloud Citadel and Efreet palace are 2 of the top 5 most difficult levels of the game to speed run, the others being Lost Caves, Soldier Barracks, and Dragoon Skyfort, if they aren't hard, they aren't being run properly.

So its been a long time, should have officially declared this thread dead a long time ago, ohhhh well. If anybody wants to pick up the any% SS category for this game I would teach you what to do, the goal is sub 37:00 using Nikki throughout the entire game using 1 glitch that saves 2 mins. Just say something I would be happy to assist. Due to many mishaps in handling videos I no longer have any BUT I do have my IL times for the SS saved in word document (certainly pays to be organized happy ). I am working on Okage Shadow King now and have spent the last 6 months casually speed running FF7, Crash 1, 2 , 3, Pandemonium 2(I have a plan for that as well), Jersey Devil, and of course Okage: Shadow King none of it was streamed....boy I really need to get into that.
Hey!
I've just bought this game and was maybe thinking of running it, since it's a fast paced game and from what I've seen, not really any singlesegmented runs on youtube.
I think this game deserve a revisit Wink

Please god yes I would love to see an actual SS run of this game! I abandoned it because of school and I ended up getting really horrible at it. I never showed any interest since and I am not all that into speedrunning anymore but I can assure you that this game is very speedrunnable.

Unfortunately I don't have the level notes or recordings anymore though. Sad Despite that there is a TAS of this game now on youtube which I would have killed for back in the day as it highlights all of the craziest shit you can do.

I wish I could be of more help, but good luck!
I see that this thread is pretty ancient and there have only been 2 posts in the past 2 years or so, but one of those posts was just 2 months ago and posting here is at least worth a shot right? Anyway: I've been looking into Pandemonium as a speed-game since I played it as a kid but I'm only really interested in 100%. To Equinox, I saw in a previous post on page 2 that you said:
Quote from Equinox:
Question 3: Obviously, since my run is SS, a segmented run would be better, but probably only by a few minutes. The thing is whether its a segmented or a SS, they are both any % because there really is no 100%.

Now I haven't played the game in years, but there's a Youtube playlist (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvV3usB1LheBpX0QYjF4lA2FPjRiX1Ret) that I've been watching recently of a Pandemonium walkthrough, and each video is titled with the levels played and the percentage that each level was completed with. There's a percentage counter at the end of each level, and it makes sense to me that a 100% category of this game would be 100%ing each individual level throughout the run.

My only question is: how the hell is percentage calculated in this game?

At first I assumed that you had to collect every token (or whatever they're called) in a level to 100% the level, but while watching the walkthrough I noticed that levels were being 100%'d while missing tokens. Then I noticed that each level has a fixed number of tokens that, once you collect said number of tokens, the count rolls over to 0 - so I next assumed that this is what triggered 100%. But again, I've seen levels completed 100% without rolling the count over and vice versa (rolling the count over but not getting 100%).

I know there are keys and power-ups scattered throughout the levels too, so I'm guessing they probably play a part in 100%ing each level - but I just can't figure it out. If anyone could shed any light on this then that would be great.

Hi, good to see interest in this. I don't know how they calculate percentage, but in all honesty I don't think that type of run would be worthwhile to go for with this game, especially since it means doing full tilt over and over again as that's forced on you for getting a 100% in a level (though you could fail it I guess, but that's still time consuming). That's just my opinion, but if you did do that definition of a 100% run I would probably recommend that you do it segmented. Maybe that could even get into the IL category, I dunno, I never really looked into it.

It would be far, far easier and less time consuming to just do an any% SS with the 3 heart container method using Nikki all the way through though.
