My SNES is rendering one of the cutscenes in the current segment of my Breath of Fire run incorrectly.  It appears that the circuits responsible for drawing mode 7 backgrounds have failed somehow, and as a result, the floor is not drawn consistently as the party is being shrunk.  I have not noticed any similar glitches during previous segments, probably because there aren't any other parts of the game that use mode 7 (to my knowledge).  I was able to confirm that the rendering glitch happens in other games, so the problem is much more likely to be with the SNES than with the cartridge.  Unfortunately, I can't say if the problem developed recently or my SNES was broken before the run started.

When I replace (repair?) my SNES to eliminate the glitch, would it be permissible for me to continue recording the run from the current segment, or would I be required to start over from a new saved game?  Like I said, I don't think this glitch has occurred anywhere else and I don't see how it would have given me an advantage if it did.  However, I do understand that failures in one part of the system make the rest of the hardware suspect.

I'm pretty sure that I've gotten in at least one round of Mario Kart since I submitted my EarthBound run, so I don't think that's in danger.  The fact that I've moved three times since I did that run may have contributed to this problem, though. Sad

P.S.  If someone wants to suggest a repair, I'd be happy to start a thread in the Tech Support forum.  Replacement is more likely given my total lack of proficiency with soldering/etc., though, so I'd rather assume that I'm going to buy a new SNES and focus on the administrative issue here.

P.P.S.  This.

I wouldn't write it off.  After all, we have tape rolling Richter Belmont.  As long as you can tell what's going on, I'd say it's fine.  Is it better to have a good quality run?  Yes.  But minor issues from damaged hardware?  Yeah, I think we can deal.

As for how to repair it, eh...that I can't help you.  It may be a pin connection issue, which there are pin connectors out there, but they're not as easy to replace as the NES ones from the time I've spent tearing apart SNESes.  (They're soldered in, unlike the NES ones which are screwed in.)
difficult and stupidly random
I would say definitely get another SNES (or fix what you've got) before recording the segment(s) where the defect shows up.  Would you really want your broken console glitches immortalized in the SDA publication?

But i can see no reason to re-do the other segments where the mode-7 isn't being used, unless you have reason to suspect that the game isn't behaving as it should.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Have you tried another game that uses mode 7 (any?) to see if the glitch happens on them as well? That way you should be able to tell if it's the system or the cart.

He did.  Both Breath of Fire and Super Mario Kart are using Mode 7 which is broke.  Thus it's the system.

Why would you have to restart the run because you got a new SNES? It's not like the cart or save data changed.

My guess is that he saved after a segment where he either noticed it occurred, or suspected that it occurred.

If it has no real effect on the run, then I don't see the problem with continuing.

Yep.  I can't say for sure when it happened, but the most likely time is when I last moved, which was a few segments ago.

Cool.  Thanks, guys.

To the store...

quick google search says you can replace a specific chip to bring it back to life: http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=2916.0 "Sadly it was the S-PPU1 (5C77) is a 100 pin QFP chip, which requires special equipment for re-working."

need to get a broken SNES/SFC to scrap though. From the sound of it though, it might be more trouble than it's worth.

Yeah, I saw that when I was hoping this would be easy to fix and then realized that it isn't.  It's a nifty idea, but I'm pretty sure that I'd leave myself with two scrap SNESes.
