We all scream for Eyes Cream
I wonder if people want a run of this, or even if its even possible for one under 7 hours. The fastest segmented time is 8:41 by David Kovaz and was done sometime last month. I have a log of his run from his post at Gamefaqs. This will be really long and requires more than 1 post, just to warn you.

Before you read the logs though, it would probably be easier(And better) to watch this highlight video.

Log of Saves

PT- Previous time (from the 10:03 run)
TT- Target time to be on track for 8:59 finish (don’t pay too much attention to these)

1. Mt. Glaus after first Nue battle – 0:24
PT- 0:26
TT- 0:24

This was a high 0:24 (about 24mins 50sec). This took over 10 tries. I had two attempts that were about 25mins 5sec, but I was hell bent on getting the save at 0:24 (yes, I restarted 10 times to save 15 seconds). Twice I got screwed on very fast starts by getting poisoned by Currs at the very bottom of Mt. Glaus. I skipped buying items to save some extra time (it turns out you don’t really need to anyway).

2. McNeil after Nue battle – 0:36
PT- 0:38
TT- 0:36

In the video you’ll notice I had another 0:36 saved, but that was 36mins 58sec, so it was basically a 0:37. The previous one was just as fast until it took two attempts to run away on BOTH battles in Cedar Woods (needless to say I was not pleased). Something very strange was happening that caused me to reset a couple dozen times for this segment. Half the time I would get into a random battle immediately after leaving the save statue (literally one step), and other times I would fight one somewhere between the cabin and the cave entrance (and rarely not fighting a battle until getting inside the cave). If the first battle occurred close to the cabin, then you’d have to fight an extra battle inside the cave, so I kept resetting for good battle locations. If you don’t understand what I just said, then don’t worry about it. Just know that I had to reset like 30 times Tongue

3. McNeil after fishing – 0:39
PT- 0:42
TT- 0:39

This took a lot of resetting and still could have been better, but I was pretty happy with this segment. I got great fish placement on the first spot and decent fish placement on the second spot, although I did lose a little time when I failed to snag a Trout. The Manillo placement could have been a lot better, but on most of my good attempts he was hanging out in deep water. At best I could have been 20 or so seconds faster if I waited for absolutely perfect fish placement.

4. Manor roof – 0:58
PT- 1:04
TT- 0:59

This only took 6 tries, and believe me, I thought it would take a whole lot more tries than that. I was hoping for a high 0:59, and I ended up getting 58mins 55sec, which is incredible. The biggest time cut was against Torast, who I dispatched of in the quickest way possible (Teepo acted first and got a critical hit with the Silver Knife). My battles with Pooch and Rocky were also much better. I was also fortunate with random battles. It doesn’t get much faster than this.

5. Camp before Myrneg – 1:14
PT- 1:22
TT- 1:15

The first try went fairly well, so I went with it. Amalgam was ok, and everything else was fine except some random battle annoyances when going for Bunyan.

6. Genmel – 1:31
PT- None
TT- 1:32

When I initially planned this run, I wasn’t planning on making this save, but splitting the Myrneg to Tower segment into two parts lets you save quite a bit of time since there are so many random battles in that interval which can potentially screw you over. In the video you can see that I saved over a 1:47 Tower save, with which I ended up being dissatisfied. This was about as perfect as you can get, because I ran from all random battles successfully and I only had to fight 3 battles at Myrneg (often you’ll have to fight a fourth just a few steps before Sunder).

7. Tower after getting Momo – 1:46
PT- 1:57
TT- 1:48

I got screwed by a double failed escape attempt on an Orc, but besides that everything was perfect. I just really wanted 1:46, and this was about a 1hr 46mins 40sec, so it wasn’t too bad.

8. Plant before the Dump – 1:59
PT- 2:11
TT- 2:00

Despite my super fast puzzle solving to begin the segment, I was pretty disappointed with this, but I was forced to accept it and proceed. I really wanted 1:58, which I thought would be easily attainable with a decent run through the Tower, but this run was pretty good and I was still 20sec off. The only major slow-down was a failed escape against a pair of Hyper Bots (and if Momo hadn’t revived with willpower, then it would have been a game over). Even if that hadn’t occurred, 1:58 may have still been out of reach, which is why I settled for a low-ish 1:59. A notable change here from my last run was skipping the 800z and using that extra time to grab the Ivory Dice (which probably cancelled out evenly).

9. Contest before Patrio – 2:13
PT- 2:29
TT- 2:17

In the vid you’ll see that I saved over a 2:15, but I decided to try for something better since my Mutant battle was terrible (over a minute slower than in my previous game). As you can see by the time I got, it paid off, and it only took one extra try. Believe it or not, the Mutant is one of the hardest bosses in a speed game. It’s difficult just to beat him, let alone beat him quickly. I used a suicide strat with Momo at the front of attack formation equipped with Flame Chrysm. The first round Momo attacks, Nina uses a Molotov, and Ryu casts Protect on Momo. Then Momo keeps attacking, Nina uses a Healing Herb on Momo every turn, and Ryu casts Protect on Momo and himself a couple more times. If you’re really lucky the battle can end in 5-6 turns, and if you have some luck left over (like I did) then Nina will get killed at the end of the battle. I was really happy with this.

10. Contest after Patrio – 2:22
PT- 2:38
TT- 2:25

The strat I used was the same as in the previous game, except I used the Ivory Dice on the Dodai to gain 3 extra levels. I also tried to get Momo to learn Double Blow from Claw in hopes that it might make the battle go faster, but just learning it in this fight is improbable because you only get one try (maybe two if Momo is killed by Double Blow, learns it, and is revived by willpower). I don’t think it would have saved very much time anyway, if any. If you watch the vid, you’ll see that I saved over a 2:22, which may seem pointless, but my first one was about 2hr 22mins 40sec and the second one was about 2hr 22mins 1sec, so it was a significant cut.

11. Genmel after contest – 2:34
PT- 2:52
TT- 2:38

I took a few tries on this and ended up saving over a slower 2:34. I refined the Emitai strat to make that battle go considerably faster (basically just had Momo and Nina defend and never heal, as healing definitely isn’t needed in this battle). Ryu was damaged from the Emitai fight, so I was able to kill myself and end the Garr battle before Garr could even attack.

12. Rhapala before Beyd – 2:55
PT- 3:16
TT- 2:57

I guess when I was setting the TT’s I overestimated the amount of time I could save in this segment, although I still shaved off a couple minutes. I got pretty lucky on the goons and the Stallion (but you need to be to save a lot of time anyway). Ryu got a critical hit in dragon form which did over 400 damage. I didn’t make the same mistake in Rhapala that I did in the previous run, obviously, but I got hung up a bit getting the Thunder gene, because I accidentally hit the R1 button when I didn’t mean to and I couldn’t see what had happened. I didn’t lose that much time on it, though. Besides that it was a very solid segment.

13. Rhapala after Beyd – 3:03
PT- 3:26
TT- 3:05

This was on my first try, which took me by surprise. I almost wanted to do it over because I thought my reaction time in some places wasn’t good, but after I reviewed the segment I figured I could only save a few seconds if I had been perfect. I refined my Beyd strat… again. I gave him Garr’s Scale Mail and a Dagger (lolz) which saved me a trip to the weapon shop. This time I trained him in one turn with Super Combo and got his HP up 4 points. Zig got a Lucky Strike on the first turn, Beyd had just enough HP to survive it, and I Super Combo’d Zig on the second turn (and I didn’t screw it up, like I sometimes do). Now I’m pretty sure you can’t do this any faster unless there was some way to skip training Beyd altogether.

14. Camp after the Lighthouse – 3:15
PT- 3:40
TT- 3:18

Random battles are a huge problem here. The sheer number of them that you have to face makes a perfect run impossible, so I just went with a decent run. There were a handful of failed running attempts in it, but compared to how lousy the luck was on my previous 20+ tries, this run wasn’t half bad. This was actually a very low 3:15 (less than 10 seconds over), which is actually better than I initially expected to do. I brought Nina along instead of Garr just because she’s easier to kill off and Garr doesn’t need any exp. I think the dialogue might be slightly shorter as well. Gazer was a joke this time around.

More in the next post.

15. Rhapala before Mt. Zublo – 3:23
PT- 3:50
TT- 3:28

I saved quite a bit more time here than I thought possible. I wasn’t even expecting to shave off any time when I was setting the TT’s. The Dolphin fight was just much better, I guess. No big change in strategy here.

16. Camp before Angel Tower – 3:35
PT- 4:06
TT- 3:41

This was pretty good and didn’t take many tries, as my new Gisshan strat was extremely effective. In attack formation, every turn Ryu uses Frost Breath in Trygon form, Momo uses Quake (Icicle on the first turn), and Garr dumps a Vitamin or Healing Herb on Ryu to keep his HP up. This didn’t work exactly the way I wanted it too because the attacking order was really inconsistent. This resulted in a couple weakened Frost Breaths, but that didn’t matter too much. You have to use a Wisdom Fruit on Ryu in this fight, but you end up with one or two extra Wisdom Fruit at the end of the game anyway, so there are no real ramifications there in regards to the Myria battle (ignore that sentence, it’s for me :P). Once both reptiles are dead, Ryu attacks Gisshan and the others defend. I was lucky enough to have Gisshan defending most of the time.

17. Dauna Mine before Dragon Zombie – 3:45
PT- 4:19
TT- 3:52

This segment is really incredible, but I definitely can’t take all the credit for it. Since I began speed running this game, I’ve tried to find a way to exploit the random battle warp (that little teleport-like shift your party makes when you get into a battle). I tried it in a lot of places, like the Container Yard (warping from the portal platform to the ground), but it never worked. However, a user from the DT forums (Everdred) told me that the warp works in Angel Tower. So I tried it out, and the warp really does work there, which allows you to skip all that block moving crap. I did a lot of experimenting with it to determine exactly what party you need, what formation and order to use, and a couple of other details to get this trick down to a science. If you watch the video, know that exactly what I did is not as easy as it looks (as there is an extra trick to the trick, which I discovered by accident to save even more time). So, mad props to Everdred for telling me about the warp, which ended up being a huge time saver once I mastered it.

Side Note- At this point in the game, I had saved 32mins from the previous run in speed run 3. In this run, I have saved 34mins.

18. Outside Dauna Mine – 3:54
PT- 4:31
TT- 4:03

I skipped the Feather Sword and Light Clothing, which saved loads of time. I was about 20sec faster on Dragon Zombie than in my previous run, although I used the same strat (except Garr was healing full time instead of wasting turns with weak attacks).

19. McNeil after Ogre Road – 4:00
PT- None
TT- 4:09

This is a save I didn’t make in the previous run which serves a few purposes. Its primary purpose is to act as a convenient reset point for getting Influence in Cedar Woods, and its other purpose is to split the segment from Dauna Mine to Mikba up so that you can be stingier with random battles. As for this first segment, it was good. Weretiger was a bit slow, but I made up for it by running from every random battle successfully.

20. Camp before Mikba – 4:11
PT- 4:49
TT- 4:20

I kept resetting until I could pick up Influence fairly quickly in Cedar Woods. This would have been better if I hadn’t gotten ambushed on my second fight in Cedar Woods and I hadn’t been forced into a third fight there as well. Otherwise everything was ok. Just note that my 4:00 save was very high (about 4 seconds under 4:01), and my 4:11 save was very low.

21. Camp after Mikba – 4:19
PT- 4:58
TT- 4:29

Since this battle only took about three tries in my previous run, I had forgotten just how much luck you need in order to win this fight (using the Weretiger insanity strat, of course). The reason it’s called the Weretiger insanity strat is because you’ll likely go insane before you manage to win. This time around it took a few dozen tries. There were very few attempts in which I got extra luck via reprisals and criticals, and I was killed in all of those. Out of all my attempts, I actually won the battle only two times. Most of the time you’re lucky if you can last longer than 3 turns. In my first victory, Mikba decided to be a jerk and use Quake when he was just one hit away from death, which killed Ryu. I actually could have continued, because Ryu technically doesn’t need the exp from that fight. However, my second victory was much faster, and Garr got killed, which means extra exp for Ryu and Rei! It wasn’t a pretty fight, but I’ll take it.

22. Plant before Underground Lab – 4:29
PT- None
TT- 4:36

The TT’s here aren’t what they should be, so just ignore them for now. This resulted from me thinking that 5min could be cut from Mikba to the Underground Lab when I was initially making the TT’s. Anyway, this save was made to ensure good rock kicking in the next segment. Nothing really special to note besides the fact that Ryu and Rei are apprenticed to Meryleep here.

23. Underground Lab (beginning) – 4:33
PT- 5:14
TT- 4:40

Again, ignore the TT’s. I didn’t waste time switching out Peco for Rei since you don’t really need him for the bosses. I also did a little practicing with the rocks and figured out a pretty quick way to kick them around.

24. Underground Lab before Shroom – 4:44
PT- None
TT- 4:51

I lost a little bit of time on random battles, but other than that things went well here. I beat the Huge Slug in three turns (gotta love those critical reprisals).

25. Camp before Tidal Caves – 5:10
PT- 5:55
TT- 5:18

After a couple tries against Shroom I thought I was going to be in the same boat against him as I was with Mikba, but luckily it didn’t take as long to get a good battle here. My strat is just to pound away at him with normal attacks in Warrior form while Momo dumps a Vitamin on Ryu every turn. Peco, of course, just sits there and looks cute until he inevitably gets killed. Like in the Mikba battle, it takes luck to win, but not nearly as much. You just have to pray that he uses Lavaburst or regular attacks the entire time. Head Cracker is certain death, Ragnarok was consistently doing damage (lots of it), and Blitz can also ruin your day. The random battles on the way out of the Lab didn’t give me any trouble, thank goodness.

26. Cliff before Gaist – 5:17
PT- 6:04
TT- 5:26

It turns out that if you have Garr in your party and have defense formation selected, you won’t have to fight random battles in the first two areas of the Tidal Caves because the path is too narrow. This saves quite a bit of time, as it replaces the re-entry method. However, I also had to make a detour and pick up the Deadly Blade, which cost me about 45sec. Because of this I ended up actually replacing a high 5:16 save with this mid-high 5:17. Why? The short answer is… this game hates me and I’m a poopy head. The long answer has to do with agility. One single agility point to be precise. When I reached Gaist in my previous run, Ryu was at level 19 with the Feather Sword and some armor equipped, and he had 21 agl. In this run, however, I had skipped the Feather Sword to save time, so Ryu was at level 21 with a Claymore and no armor equipped, and he had 17agl. Extra turns are crucial against Gaist, and I knew I would have this agility difference, so I thought this over carefully before deciding whether or not to pick up the Feather Sword in this run. In this run I’m using a Frost + Gross Warrior, which has a 210% agility multiplier, instead of a regular Frost Warrior, which has a 180% agility multiplier. So I figured that I would still get extra turns, because I did have them in my practice run. Well… I was almost right. I got into a fight with Gaist with 17 agl and I didn’t get extra turns, at which point I panicked. My only option at this point was to go back a save and pick up the lighter Deadly Blade, because otherwise I would have been completely screwed. I did some number crunching, and I discovered that if my agl had been one point higher, I would have gotten extra turns. Of course, getting the Deadly Blade takes less time than getting the Feather Sword, however, this situation could have been avoided if I had picked up the Swallow Eye at the Lighthouse. So yeah, I’m an idiot. I’m just lucky that this mistake didn’t cost me that much time.

27. Camp before Steel Beach – 5:32
PT- None
TT- 5:41

Now that I have my extra turns, Gaist is a joke. I extended this segment by saving in camp right after getting permission to look for parts from the guild master; mainly to put more dialogue skipping behind me in case I have to reset, and I also think it’s slightly faster than saving in town.

28. Parch before shisu quest – 5:50
PT- 6:43
TT- 5:59

I took out Angler pretty quickly with Thorn + Gross Warrior. I also had Garr kill himself to direct more exp to Ryu and Rei. After reviewing the tape of the previous run, I memorized all the part locations and got them all without fiddling around with camera angles.

29. Start of Black Ship – 6:04
PT- 6:59
TT- 6:13

This is not a fun segment to do, by any stretch. I saved over a low 6:05 because I made a couple of big mistakes in that run, and I decided that I really wanted 6:04. This one ended up being VERY high. If I was one second slower it would have been a 6:05. Overall things went well here, even though the fishing wasn’t as fast as I hoped it would be. Good fish setups were very scarce, and in 3+ hours of attempts I never saw a Mackerel start closer than 7-10m.

Last bit in the next post
We all scream for Eyes Cream
30. Black Ship before Ammonites – 6:16
PT- 7:12
TT- 6:25

I used P2 and P3 instead of P3 and P5, which saved some time. The random battles were also perfect.

31. Kombinat – 6:23
PT- 7:23
TT- 6:35

Hell yeah! An hour saved already! Well, it may not be exactly an hour saved yet, because this was a very high 6:23 (only one or two seconds from 6:24). Still, I hit this mark much earlier than I expected. I wasted the Ammonites very quickly with Thunder + Gross Warrior and dumped two Ivory Dice on them to gain some crucial levels. I purchased a Heat Shotel for Rei to use later, and spent my remaining money on Vitamins (although I bought way more than I’ll need).

32. Dragnier before Elder – 6:56
PT- 8:01
TT- 7:09

This segment is both boring and incredibly frustrating, because it’s over half an hour of nothing but dialogue and random battles. I really wasn’t having much luck with the random battles, with the exception of one attempt where I made it all the way to the Relay Point A antenna without any failed escapes. Unfortunately, I got too punchy with the text scrolling and I accidentally screwed up the antenna (embarrassing, I know). In the run I ended up going with, I only had a couple failed escapes. I used the Garr + defense formation tactic again to cut down on the number of battles I had to fight, although it only seemed to be effective in the Steel Grave and the Colony.

33. Dragnier after Elder – 7:04
PT- 8:13
TT- 7:19

I actually beat the Elder on my first try in about 4mins 40sec, but at this point my goal had become to beat him in under 4mins. Then, a whole two tries later, I downed him in 3mins 40sec. Rag’s suggestion of applying the Mikba strat to this fight turned out to be incredibly effective. On the first turn Rei goes Weretiger, Ryu uses the Robe of Wind on himself, and Momo cast Speed on Rei. Then Ryu spends his turns casting Shield or healing and Momo casts Might a few times. I was surprised, at how weak Rei’s damage was without any Mights (with lows just under 300 and highs just above 400). But with 1-2 Mights, his damage got up to a respectable 400-650. I also got very lucky with a nice critical hit which did over 1000. The Elder used Myollnir three times; twice against Rei (<3 Thunder Ring) and once against Momo on the very turn in which I was manually trying to kill her! So… Elder = pwned.

34. Base Camp – 7:08
PT- 8:18
TT- 7:23

This was about as fast as you can possibly be here. Once again, I used the Garr + defense form tactic to cut down on random battles, and I ran from every battle in one try.

35. Oasis – 7:32
PT- 8:45
TT- 7:48

Ugh. I had to redo this because in a previous attempt my tape ran out just as I was about to save at the Oasis. However, this run was a little bit faster and ended up being a pretty high 7:32 instead of the low 7:33 that I wanted. For Manmo I used a Thorn + Gross Warrior and had a fairly clean battle. Rei and Momo performed regular attacks against the Manmo in order to elicit reprisals to kill them off so Ryu could hog all the exp.

36. Myria Station before Laboratory – 7:37
PT- 8:50
TT- 7:52

Although the times don’t show it, I saved a good bit of time here. I didn’t stop to buy equipment, I cut out a random battle via Garr + defense form, and I ran from all the battles successfully.

37. Ryu’s Dream – 7:54
PT- 9:11
TT- 8:10

This was a very high 7:54 (about 2-3sec from 7:55), but I saved over a mid 7:56, so it was quite a nice improvement. Using defense formation and walking precise routes, I was able to greatly reduce the number of random battles that came up. My only failed escape was against a snoozing Foul Weed, so I only lost a few seconds on that. And despite Ryu getting hit by Paralyzer, my Chimera battle was a bit faster than in my previous run.

38. Battle Rooms before Myria – 8:10
PT- 9:30
TT- 8:28

The random battles were pretty strange in Ryu’s Dream. On the first try of every session (meaning, every time I sit down to play), I wouldn’t get a random battle until Momo had at least said her first set of lines. This results in fighting three battles in Ryu’s Dream (after the save point). However, on consecutive tries using soft reset, I would be forced into a battle almost immediately almost every time. In this case you would have to fight four battles. I was getting pretty frustrated with this until I found out that if you hit the reset button on the console instead of soft resetting, you’ll get the three battle setup every time. Once I had that crap figured out, the only other worries I had were Arwan and the random battles after D Lord. You need a bit of luck for Arwan, because he can ruin you with two connecting physicals or Sleep. D Lord was even more of a joke this time around, as I took him out with two single-focused Shadowwalks and one regular Shadowwalk, which shaved off two turns (with a battle time of just under 2mins). The random battle escaping on the way back was perfect and the two battle room bosses were taken out much more efficiently.

39. CLEAR SAVE – 8:41
PT- 10:03
TT- 8:59

1hr 22mins saved!

LQ Vid

There is a better one, but I cannot get it at the moment.

If its possible to get under 7, maybe a little over 7 but under 8, I may do this.
Bring me the flaming voodoo canonball!
I should be almost possible to get just under 8 hours. But there must be a lot of random battle avoiding and lot's of luck manipulation.
Which might lead to resetting a segment many times.
100% runs=great to watch
Before I kill my day downloading this whole thing to watch, somebody please tell me:  Is this the same video/game that somebody posted an unofficial run at least several months back?  Or is this the "improvement" run that was alluded to all that time ago?
We all scream for Eyes Cream
Its an improvement as it was done within the last month.
100% runs=great to watch
Just finished watching the whole thing....pretty good sized chunk of improvement.  That being said, it'd take another good sized chunk of improvement, or some kinda TAS, before I'd marathon through it again.  Cool overall though.
Very nice improvement. Would SDA accept it now that it's been improve by more than an hour? Probably not, but I'm asking anyway.
The soft limit on times for a speedrun is about 8 hours, no?
Bring me the flaming voodoo canonball!
Maybe if you could somehow shave off another 30 minutes, it might get excepted.....

Final Fantasy IX run is 8:32(?) on this site.
Ah my first and favorite RPG. I owe my love for RPGs to this game.

I think that a speedrun would be pretty cool. Now thinking about it I don't think I ever beat it. It really makes me wanna play it some more.

I don't think that battles can be avoided to come up  since some RPGs are set to a certain distance. You may be able to manipulate the types of battles that you encounter though.

Yea, go for it.
Long live SF64!
If the run is well-optimized and the runner follows all the SDA procedures, I can't imagine a 9 hour run being turned down for length alone. BoF 3 has gotten enough attention by now that I would think SDA would accept a good run even if it does push the time limit.

BoF 1 was my first RPG, so I've always loved the BoF series.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Hmm, I didn't post earlier, but I should have, since I was the one to suggest PS2 fast loading (which I assume is most of the difference since the last version) to DavidK5.

Do we actually know how much lower the time could go, or is it just speculation? Maybe I should check gamefaqs.

At any rate, someone should ask DavidK5 to submit, because I'm sure it would be accepted. Ignore all the soft limit talk, it's obvious and plus Mike even said "sure."
We all scream for Eyes Cream
From the last post for the Speed Run thread at Gamefaqs, about 10 minutes and 39 seconds. Maybe even less with a lot of luck during boss battles(More criticals for example).
Bring me the flaming voodoo canonball!
Are you first gonna do BoF3 or KH2?
We all scream for Eyes Cream
I'll be doing KH2 first. I doubt I would do this one as I haven't played it in a while, and whenever I do play it I always go slow.
Bring me the flaming voodoo canonball!
Weretiger could be usefull if you have that goblin ability (forgot name) which makes sure that Rei in Weretiger form attacks the enemy.
The thing is, it is after like half the game and you need a party member only for healing.
