Looking into purchasing a widescreen CRT for PS3 games. This one has an HDMI input, which would save me from buying a new capture card. (My Hauppauge HD PVR 2 currently does HDMI out for display)

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-KV-30HS420-Trinitron-HD-Ready-Widescreen/dp/B0002F7I9O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406288144&sr=8-1&keywords=widescreen+crt

Sorry if it's a very basic questions but I have little audio/video knowledge. Will HDMI create more response time or does every input act the same on CRTs?

I suspect there will be some lag, since CRTs are analog and HDMI is a digital format. The TV will have to convert the signal from Digital to Analog in order to be displayed, which may take a few milliseconds.

This is just my guess though.
All the things
Any TVs with HDMI in are 1080i native, so any signals will be scaled to that output. If you plan to use it as a means of reducing lag, I think you will find that it will perform no better than a decent LCD for HDMI.
It might even be slower (and look worse) than a good LCD gaming monitor. There are several monitors with 2-5ms input lag.

Response Time is not the same as input lag. Best observed input lag rates on LCDs is in the range of 17-20 ms, or around a frame. Average case is closer to 2 frames. This metric varies widely depending on the input resolution and type, though. Rule of thumb is to match the input to the native resolution of the display, so typically 720p or 1080p.
The ASUS VG248QE does have an input lag of 2ms at 144Hz or 4ms at 60Hz compared to a CRT. There are also fast LCD TVs. For example the Sony KDL-42W650 has an input lag of around 8ms for progressive input signals. But as Omnigamer said, don't be fooled by the response time or g2g times the companies tell you.

Scaling 720p on a 1080p monitor generally doesn't add any lag.

Do you have a source for that information? 2 ms is really fast for any type of digital processing, and it's still a far cry from the values I'm seeing at http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/

Immensely helpful info, I know my options now. The LG tv i use now (LG 32 inch LN5300) seems to have over 20ms input lag and it did always feel pretty meh with input lag. thanks
Your TV has about 2 frames of input lag. That shouldn't feel laggy. Input lag is only a problem once it's way over 50ms (3 frames) or you are used to play the game on a CRT TV. Make sure that you enable Game mode if that's possible on your TV.
