i plan to record a run of need for speed most wanted 2005(pc), it would be about 8 hours long so i want to minimize the size of resulting video. i capture with following settings:

capturing device: bandicam(i see it much better at capturing than fraps)
playing resolution: 800*600
capturing resolution: 400*300
playing framerate: varies, i limit it at 90fps when capturing
capturing framerate: 30fps
video codec: h264 realtime encoded at record
audio codec: 128kbps mp3
container: avi

even with such low settings the video size is over 1gb per hour, so sending them would take a long time.

do i need to do anything to make it meet sda requirements, or send them as "raw files" type and leave the postprocessing to sda?
Thread title:
1gb per hour is really nothing, I have raw files that are 3-4gb per minute.
Without having seen a video sample, I would say 400*300 is not gonna match SDA requirements.

I recommend recording at least at 800x600 if not higher (if your PC can handle that) and to encode your raw files with either Anri-Chan or Yua (these are programs).
For SDA you need LQ, MQ, and HQ encodes. These resulting videos are much much smaller in size (for example, a 3-minute 12gb raw file can be ~60mb as a HQ encode). You should have no problems uploading these.

Another entirely different question is if the run itself is good enough. What category is this run in ?

i am confident that the run would be good enough. its an any% run, with planned strategies to finish only necessary tasks and get to the end of the story mode as fast as possible.

as for the video quality, since it would be estimated at about 8 hours long, with some single segments going over 20 minutes, and i am obessed in minimizing harddrive access during capture to prevent causing lagging, i feel that the only choice is to capture with realtime h264 encoding. the captured 400*300 h264 video is about 20mb per minute, which is in equivalent to sda encode standards. however, the utility can only capture in avi container, which seems unfavorable for sda.

besides, does Anri-Chan and Yua have the "direct stream copy" mode like virtualdub? so i can afford to simply repackage avi into mp4, without going through further lossy compression.

anyway, i am willing to upload a video sample to show off the quality of both the skill of running and the video, can i upload on the forum?

You would satisfy the LQ requirements, but honestly, it will not be satisfying to watch, especially since now everybody has huge resolution monitors in comparison to back then.

Sending huge files is usually not a problem, you don't have to send everything in one sitting, the programs can pause and resume upload.

Also: According to speedrun.com it may be possible to cut time down to 4h for career any% when using glitches, do you want to avoid those?

Edit: Oh, you should also use h264 inside mp4, not avi, which anri-chan and Yua can do.

Ekelbatzen: my run doesn't use the glitch, actually i didn't know about it before.
i did a 8:36 run back in 2009, its not very optimized and now i am confident that i can get it under 8 hours.

i am also very shocked at seeing that the unglitched record is under 7:10. but after seeing their segment times, i believe they are using a different rule of timing from mine. for example, my prologue took about 10:25, while most people on the ranking time at about 9:00, thats too large a gap to be explained by skill rather than rule difference. unfortunately i can't see their videos on youtube thanks to internet censoring.

my timing method is simply sum up the length of all videos, each video must start and stop at menu or garage, and cover every movement i do in the game. because there are other things than racing and pursuits that take time during the game, such as buying and upgrading cars, which must be taken into strategy consideration.

for converting avi into mp4, i can only comply in case anri-chan and Yua have a "direct stream copy" mode like virtualdub does, otherwise i can't accept going through another meaningless lossy compression which further degrades video quality.
