Well, as I'm planning to be in England for pretty much all of 2012 (and travelling around Europe during the summer), I'll actually be close enough to pay a visit.

Besides, who wouldn't want to see Frezy again?

The original idea, since it at that point wasn't completely serious, was to have it here in Sweden. But when I've brought it up with a more serious mindset, some other people have seemed to think Sweden would be a good idea too[citation needed]. (also, that probably means greater chance to have Frezy join us. If that's not reason enough to have it here, I don't know what would be.)

Deciding on country should probably come down to where the main organiser is close to. Running an event that you're not able to get to and from easily is a pain, especially if you need last minute supplies from home. It also helps to have someone know the area.

As for Sweden, that place is expensive to get to for quite a few countries and expensive once you're there. Not to mention you guys don't use the euro which would mean a lot of lost money for visitors who require exchanging money. One of the pros is that it's a very bilingual country.

Bare in mind: , cost and ease of travel.

Language Barriers
English is our collective language so for people to get about we'll need a place that you can get by with English in. England is obvious, but Sweden and Netherlands have very high percentage of fluent English speakers. Germany is good, but France, Italy, Spain etc aren't. This could be important for food runs and any issues at the venue.

Cost
Now some places in Europe are cheap and some aren't Switzerland and the Nordic countries are some of the most expensive in Europe (even more so that England) and could severely hinder people's plans to travel. We're nearly all poor students or minimum wagers here so cost will be important to consider. Also note that some countries have currencies that require exchanging. A country that uses the Euro would be ideal if we have a equal split of visitors from all over europe as it's very easy to get good rates for and a majority of people already have it.

Travel
Some places in Sweden (everywhere but Stockholm) are a pain to get to for most people. I live in the land of cheap air travel but others don't. My friend when flying from Gothenburg to Milan found it cheap to get a return flight to London and a return from London to Milan that to get a return from Gothenburg to Milan. Countries in central Europe are very easy for people to drive to and from. Which could improve the likelihood of people deciding to attend.

There's also many other things like internet and whatnot. My vote is for Germany or the Netherlands or something like that.

The reason DC works well as a location for America is that it's in a well populated area of the country and it's damn easy to get to for most people (comparatively). I know Summer games was a smaller event but you can see how much harder it is to get to Utah that DC.
Sea of Green
Wherever we end up having it, I'm definitely throwing my support behind a European marathon. I would love to attend and make prizes. Couldn't be better timing considering I'll be living in England in two weeks... Cheesy

Maybe this marathon should be in April/May (around the time JRDQ was this year) instead of early summer, so if we have 3 marathons in a year they're evenly spaced out?

RE: Flicky

All very good points! The currency thing didn't come to mind, since, yeah, no Euro here. But pretty much everyone indeed speaks English.

Cost and travel issues is a thing. Can't say I've ever noticed any issues about traveling to/from Gothenburg, since I live here, but I really haven't been traveling much since I got here, so take that tidbit with a grain of salt.

Germany is an idea. Watch Kenny try to speak German, which he haven't studied for many, many years! Close enough for me to make it (Road trip from Sweden to Germany with the Swedish runner crew, go go go), and to afford it.

puwexil: The reason I suggest early summer is to have it after school's out. At least for me, May tends to be finals month, during which I very much would not have anywhere close to the time to partake in a marathon, especially not if it ends up being outside Sweden.

yeah if it were in april/may i wouldn't be able to come. and we all know what trekhaak would feel if i couldn't come.

Off topic, but I had to say that that's pretty much a constant across the whole airline industry.

As for the idea, sounds great, but I seriously doubt I'd be able to afford to fly across the Atlantic just to watch people speedrun, as cool as it would be.

I think either early summer or in the Easter holidays (unless that's just a British thing) would be very good times to do a marathon.

Also, I would be very interested in going to this should it happen, however with my AS Levels having exams through the last month of school it seems like I wouldn't have enough time to practice or anything (that is, assuming I have enough money and have at least one good run).

In regards to location, I think either somewhere Nordic or somewhere around Germany would be best (I would say not England as things are expensive, it's not connected to the rest of Europe and the internet sucks). A positive for Sweden would be having the opportunity to see Notch and the rest of Mojang at some point Tongue

Well, the point is pretty much to have a marathon for the runners that can't make it to AGDQ for this very reason. Tongue
#Casual
Along that note, people would have to decide which they'd rather go to: AGDQ or .. or .. Awesome Games Done European? (lolno)
Balls jerky
but the whole marathon will be 20% slower Sad

Well, I would like to say that we don't want to have too many marathons either. You'll get fewer donations as time goes on. I wouldn't donate to every marathon that goes on throughout the year. Sure, I'll donate for some things, but there is no reason have excessive marathons either, then donations will go down, as while there are more opportunities, there are more reasons to then blow off donating until a later marathon, and use the same excuse of "I'll donate next time I think 2 marathons for year is plenty, and the way we do it now is fine with me.

So then SGDQ can be dropped for this. What's the point of having two marathons that most of the Europeons can't attend when the stream will still be international?

EDIT: Also, who wouldn't want donation challanges for the runners with accents to say tounge twisters?

My feelings on The Demon Rush
ExtremeYoshifan: There's nothing that says we have to have the same marathons every year in between the AGDQs. We could have the Europe marathon in place of the online marathon. It's not very fair to say Europeans can't have a marathon just because there would be too many, we should adjust accordingly.
I'm interested. Any date before July would probably be a bad time for me but I'm still interested.

Having the online marathon be cut seems like a pretty bad idea, personally, since that one can be participated in by anyone. :\

Though if we do one again next year, let's better plan it.  I mean, the video situation ended up being a big fat mess I think due to the lack of preparation in getting everybody ready on how to setup and (more importantly) record their streams.
I survived MIKE-Fest 1
basically I like the idea of a Europe marthon
Flicky summed it up pretty good so I vote for Germany too

the thing is the organization because it should be close to someone how is willing to organize the marathon

Maybe we people how are willing to organize should post were they would organize it than we can see how many people would travel to that place and than decided if we go for it

to get the ball rolling I vote for Germany near Karlsruhe (thats were I live)
Definitely an interesting idea, count me in.

I vote for germany too. It's located in central europe and therefore good reacheable by car, for most europeans.
Karlsruhe sounds nice, if you have the means to organize a marathon.
@Kenny: There's a pretty cheap flight from gothenburg to frankfurt(both flights 88 Euro), what's pretty close to karlsruhe

I myself live in Mönchengladbach, Germany right next to the southern border of netherland. Good reachable as there are many airports here and it's a good location for most of you. Problem is I wouldn't know of any facility here, where to hold a marathon... Will look around a bit....
