History: I had an old youtube account, KaddyGamer, that got suspended. Had a lot of subs, vids, and views at the time. Tried to get back into it, but due to the lack of quality from my old vids (240p), I had little motivation in re-uploading all of those all over again. Plus, I actually did wanted to redo all of it with 1080i. However, at that time, money was an issue.

As of right now though, money is not that large of an issue like back then. Some, but I can afford it. So this is what brings me back in. Plus, with the right setup, I do want to make a speed run for a few games (I  don't understand, but why no SR for FF13/-2/-3 and Tales of the Abyss yet?). With this, I intend to do something more with it. Yet, seeing as how I'm outdated in many aspects and this place was originally were I learned all about making videos, I thought I'd ask here first. So, onto my questions. I had a lot, but I want to start with some of the basics.

- Virtual Dub/Mod + Avisynth + MeGui: These 3 things were how I made my videos in the past for youtube. I looked at the knowledge page and I was shocked that Virtual Dub was still on that list. I thought it would be replaced or something. A long time ago, people recommended me Anri-Chan. From what I recall though, Anri-chan doesn't use Avisynth, right? Regardless, my real question is, can I use these 3 for making 1080i videos or no? (I don't want to have that big of a change if I don't have to.)

- Video Capture Card + Desktop: I know, this is going to be weird and I probably won't get an answer; or "you decide" and/or "build one yourself from scratch." I know, but I want to get a background of what I actually will need.  The basic question for this is "recommend me a Desktop (amazon, newegg, etc...) with a Medium/Hi-End Video Capture Card that will allow me to make 1080i videos." I looked through the knowledge base and there was only one that caught my eye. AverMedia C027. Yet, it's only barely a 4 star on amazon. That doesn't give me a confidence at that card. The top sellers on amazon is also less aspiring.

I know this may be a lot of rambling. I just want to get a good setup since I don't want to deal with me being ready and able to speed run, but my hardware/software is holding me back. Maybe there is even a website that has these recommendations that I'm not aware of (like eCollegePC, but it isn't meant for game recording though...). Lastly, my budget is $800. Mainly doing it for PS2/3/4 games via HDMI mostly and hopefully the capacity to do PC games in the future as an option.

- Yip you can use those 3 still. VirtualDub has technically been replaced by AmaRecTV for capturing but it's still amazing. anri-chan does use AviSynth. I would recommend yua over anri-chan (it's an upgraded anri-chan with multi platform support) but since you want to deinterlace from 1080i, I'd stick with anri-chan since it has a better d1 deinterlacer.

- I'd recommend the PEXHDCAP over the C027. Not saying the C027 is bad here but the PEXHDCAP will give you better Component capture for your PS2 and it's only $10 more on Amazon. As for the PC, I guess we are working with a $700 budget since the card is $100. Anything that fits into your budget here I guess: http://www.newegg.com/Gaming-Desktops/PromotionStore/ID-2125620

Most specifically this being the bang for buck I think: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227596
Thanks. Good to hear that I can still use my previous familiar programs. Yeah, I'll considered trying out the newer, more popular programs.

At the end however, I decided to go with this instead in terms of desktop:
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/desktops/lenovo/k-series/k450e/?menu-id=k_series_towers#tab-customize
For me, it's i5 vs i7. Among other differences as well. Hopefully, my was the right choice.

It seems my budget has increased by a little. I can do $900 to 1K now. I've ordered my desktop, so the remaining thing is the capture card.

For PEXHDCAP, everything looks good except:
- I don't quite understand how it can capture PS2. It doesn't accept S-Videoor Composite... the hell am I suppose to use then? I looked on ebay, but it still doesn't the logic still connect whatsoever.
- A review had "I wouldn't get it for the price it is now, only because HDMI input won't accept copyrighted material(ps4, etc)." I thought it was only for PS3... so it's for PS4 as well?

Anyways, I really don't see any other issue with it. I read the 3 stars and down. Some complaints are somewhat... not relevant to my current situation. Sooner or later, I think I'll just get it anyways because I don't see anything else that I want. Return it if I don't want it. Lastly, is it me or is all Capture Cards with PCIe good for all computer types as long as it can meet the specs? I think I was worried over nothing.
HELLO!
Get the USB3HDCAP then. It does composite and S-Video.

You capture PS2 via Component, hence the "give you better Component capture for your PS2". Tongue

You can still buy the official PS3 Component cables which will work with the PS2 if you are wondering.

That review was probably written when the PS4 didn't have the HDCP patch. It's only now correct for PS3.
presjpolk: Not to offend others that use it, but I rather not use any type of boxes for capturing. I have bad experience with them. Yeah, sure, I had technical issues with them before (audio lag, video lag, no audio, etc...), but my main issue is the placements. I've accidentally dropped them, kicked them, stepped on them, spilled liquid on them... I just don't want them out in the open. Thus, I prefer PCIe or anything that's inside the computer.

Thrillness: Oic, I didn't know that PS2 can do Components as well. Good, good.

Well, that's settled, I'm getting it. For now, I'll just have to wait for the goods. Thanks.
The Dork Knight himself.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_games_with_HD_support  <-- Just in case you don't know, you can force 480p mode with component cables on a PS2 but it has to be manually done. That wiki entry has a list of games and the modes that are supported.
Thanks honorableJay. I just saved that link for future reference.

Yet, I do have to wonder about it though. This PS3 HDCP business. Does that mean we can't record from PS3 with HDMI? And is that the reason why the Knowledge Base doesn't have anything for PS3 for the recording section? I read elsewhere that this can be done with Component cables. If you want to capture PS3, you need to use Component (lower quality I think); not HDMI. True?

On a different note, I thought we could capture Vita games. How come it's left blank?

Back to the main subject:
- I can use VirtualDub with PEXHDCAP right? I don't see any place where I can check the compatibility.
- In the KB, it states "You save the avs file, and load that into MeGUI or VirtualDub for final compression." From what I remember, MeGui does the compressing/encoding. Can VirtualDub do the same thing as well? How?
- About Anri and Yua. These 2 programs are basically replacing both Avisynth + MeGui at the same time, correct?
- Lastly, when is Yua expected to be done and will they add a estimated time feature? I see the bar, but a timer will be more helpful. Regardless, quite nifty.
thethrillness.blogspot.com
Check out our sticky about removing HDCP for PS3.

tl:dr, buy a specific splitter to record PS3 over HDMI.

As for questions,

- Yip. It's DirectShow.
- Usually MeGui yeah but I guess you could compress it with x264vfw which does the same thing, more or less.
- Pretty much.
- Yeah a timer would be nice. I don't think nate is actively developing it now though.
yua wasn't meant for timing but a time is shown at the lower right as you scrub through the video and it may be accurate if you're lucky.
Haven't got the time to test yua yet. Didn't think anyone responded while I was away. Now, for the real reason that I'm back here. My Startech came.. finally. Already seeing some issues. I could complain for hours, but I would prefer a solution instead. Facts and issues as needed.

I have 2 PS3s and 1 PS4.

- It could capture fine with component on one of my PS3s because it has very, very old CFW. Didn't work with my other PS3. However, I had to switch it to 1080i.
- I could not capture with HDMI with any of my PS3 or PS4.
- I've used with VirtualDub and the program that came with me (StreamCatcher?) Both giving me the same results.
- I would get NOTHING with the PS3s and I could only get Audio from the PS4.
- With the PS4 I've tried both turning the HDMI Link and HDCP off. That didn't work. The same audio only, no video.
- When I tried using Safe Mode with the PS4, all I got was the sign "HDCP." At that point, no video and audio at all. It wouldn't change to anything else. When I re-checked it, HDCP and the link was still both OFF.
- VirtualDub, when I check Video Source, it gave me "No video sources." But it did recognize the PCI "SA7160, Analog Capture (#01) (DirectShow)

PS TV (A different issue)
- I plugged both my P4Golden game and my 32GB (which had my saved files) into the PS TV. When I started the thing up, it asked me to link accounts. I did. Went to start P4G and it gave me "You must insert a memory card to use the application on this PS Vita Card."
- So I thought it was loose. So I took it out. It gave me "The memory card has been removed. Do not remove the memory card while this system is in use. If you do, the data may become corrupt. This system will restart." Dude,  I thought you just told me I didn't have a memory card inserted? The hell...
- I restarted it and tried again. No use. Went into Content Manager. Say the files still in my memory, but I can't access them and it states 0 GB.
- Tried to just record to see if I can get anything. I don't hear any audio with StreamCatcher at all. Instead, I got hit with HDCP. Seriously?
- Restarted both PSTV and my computer and tried VirtualDub instead. Instant HDCP. WOW...

Overall, not a good, happy day whatsoever.

Willing to try the Splitter, but with so many posts, I'm not quite sure what is the recommended one?

I hate to see my splitter coming next week, and it becoming a fail. I'm lost, confused, and disappointed. I was show excited for this weekend... Someone! Show me the light!
Okay, I've returned my StarTech and got a more expensive card called AverMedia Live Gamer HD. So far, so good. Yet, I'm debating on what to do.
- If I use their original software, I can skip VDub and I get .mp4 and .ts files. Is that still doable with Avisynth + MeGui?
- If I use VDub, which is still doable, I still can't listen to audio and record at the same time without the drop/insert frames going on. On top of that, what do I need on VDub again in order to get 1080p recording?

- I want to settle with their original software (I get to listen while playing), however I do want to mess with the specs since it's very flexible. With all at defeault, 5 minutes of footage takes about 450MB. Too high for my standards. The following are the ranges that it can do. I just want to know, is there a recommended video format:
--Video Format: MP4 (H.264, AAC), TS (H.264, AAC)
--Resolution: 1920x1080, 1680x1080... 640x480
--Video Bitrate: Default at 12 Mpbs, Range at 0.3 to 60 Mpbs
--Audio Bitrate: Default at 128 kpbs, Range at 32 to 256 kpbs
--Frame Rate: Default at 30, Range at 15 to 30

- Yeah you can. Originally you would use AviSource (for avi files obviously) but with mp4/ts you will want to use: http://avisynth.nl/index.php/FFmpegSource
- I actually forget that.

- Your format should be mp4 since it'll give you frame accurate processing in FFmpegSource.
- Your output resolution should match your input resolution. 1080p in, 1080p out.
- Completely depends on what your preference is based on storage requirements. Configure it till it suits your needs.
- Definitely 256. Audio takes up so little space you should use the max at all times.
- Almost always 30 (max for 1080p on that card). 720p should probably be 60.

Okay, I don't get it. I downloaded FFmegSource, but I have no idea where to put it. I thought putting the whole extraction in Avisynth folder would do it, but nope.

I just did a small test run with script and simply opening it with Vdub:
FFmpegSource("9mb.mp4")
FFVideoSource("9mb.mp4")
FFVideoSource("C:\Users\***\Video Processing\9mb.mp4")

None of those work. And if possible, I would like to see a complete script of how people are use it. This is what I had in the past, for example:

Code:
avisource("a.avi")

trim(300,600) ++ trim(3000,15000).AssumeFPS(60,true)

FlipHorizontal()

swapfields()
telecide()
lanczos4resize(1280,720)

ConvertToYV12()

I looked online for the codes related to FFmegSource. I see nothing even close to this. I can still use these elements/concepts of what I had before right?
thethrillness.blogspot.com
Check nate's post here on how to use it.
Link? Specific topic I'm suppose to read?  What section in kb?
thethrillness.blogspot.com
Bleh, I'm sure I copy/pasted it in.

https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/reencoding_with_anrichan_from_elgatorecorded_mp4_files.html
Okay, thanks, that worked!

Still, I'm wondering how I can incorporate what I got last night dealing with directshowsource (something I'm told that I should not use, but it was just for testing. I did work.)

Code:
a = DirectShowSource("C:\Users\F\Desktop\Video Processing\9mb.mp4")
b = DirectShowSource("C:\Users\F\Desktop\Video Processing\10mb.mp4")

a = a.trim(0,300) + speed(a.trim(301,2000),2)
b = speed(b.trim(100,500),2) ++ b.trim(501,600)

AlignedSplice(a,b)

But now, for what was suggested is something like this:

Code:
ffvideosource("9mb.mp4")
audiodub(ffaudiosource("9mb.mp4"))

trim(0,300) + speed(trim(301,2000),2)

This indeed works (at least tested on VDub), but how do I add my 10mb.mp4 video source? Maybe there's a logic I don't see here.

I tried FFmpegsource2(), but it said it couldn't find it. It seems I don't know how to use this... That's the only thing that I see that combines the 2 instead of having them on different lines.
try this:

Code:
ffvideosource("9mb.mp4")
audiodub(ffaudiosource("9mb.mp4"))

trim(whatever)

a=last
#now your first trimmed video is called "a"

ffvideosource("10mb.mp4")
audiodub(ffaudiosource("10mb.mp4"))

trim(whatever)

b=last
#now your second trimmed video is called "b"

#append them
a++b

if you want a third then add it above the last two lines. can call it "c". then the last line would change to a++b++c. etc. untested and been a while since i wrote avisynth. let me know.

just as an aside, if all this scripting is getting annoying, you might play around with yua, try dropping an mp4 in there and then going to file -> append to add the next one. then you can trim by scrubbing around and using the home and end keys to mark a range and hitting delete, exactly like in virtualdub. just remember to trim after appending rather than before. would be a shame if the input is really 1080i but the bobby deinterlacing may be acceptable to you. otherwise avisynth takes a while to wrap your head around but it does work if you put the time into it. it became unworkable for me because of the volume of stuff i encode.

KADFC: 2015-05-27 07:40:38 pm
Nate: Okay, I tried using that and I really don't know why, but it keeps on crashing within 100 frames before the second clip. When I say it crashes, I mean VDub has "stopped working." It doesn't even give off any kind of codes. It just gives me:

Code:
VirtualDub has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

I've tried making something similar to yours. Same concept, but it also crashes Sad

Code:
aa = ffaudiosource("9mb.mp4")
ab = ffvideosource("9mb.mp4")
a = audiodub(ab,aa).trim(0,900)

ba = ffaudiosource("10mb.mp4")
bb = ffvideosource("10mb.mp4")
b = audiodub(bb,ba).trim(0,1000)

AlignedSplice(a,b)

So far, it has not crash with directshowsource. Just saying. Remind me, what's bad about dss again? Oh, btw, it loads fine on VDub. It only crashes if I was playing the preview for it. If this is of no concern, then I guess I'll just use it.

Even though that is true, there's things that draws me to it. Frame by frame editing, and the power to use the same scripts over and over again. If it was mainly and solely for "streaming" gameplay, then yes, I would rely on Yua more. However, that's not the case for me.
Well, this works, somehow Smiley

Code:
aa = ffaudiosource("9mb.mp4")
ab = ffvideosource("9mb.mp4",seekmode=0)
a = audiodub(aa,ab)

e = a.trim(201,300) ++ a.trim(301,501) ++ speed(a.trim(501,800),2)

ba = ffaudiosource("11mb.mp4")
bb = ffvideosource("11mb.mp4",seekmode=0)
b = audiodub(ba,bb).trim(0,200)

d = audiodub(ba,bb).trim(51,400)

AlignedSplice(e,d)

Now, I'm just wondering. How reliable is this "seekmode=0"? With this, I got no corrupts with VDub and I got no crashes with MeGui. I went back to that ffmpegsource page. I see that it's there, but besides telling me to add it, it doesn't really explain why. Instead, they have seekmode =-1 or 1.
Edit history:
nate: 2015-05-28 08:43:49 am
should be totally reliable but omfg slow for seeking near the end of longer videos. from the docs:

Quote:
0: Linear access (i.e. if you request frame n without having requested all frames from 0 to n-1 in order first, all frames from 0 to n will have to be decoded before n can be delivered). The definition of slow, but should make some formats "usable".

btw, what you are experiencing will give you a slight hint as to how annoying yua was to write. always the knowledge that no matter how hard you try, people will produce input that breaks what you wrote. luckily i can always dump nmf using ffmpeg or something. having a lot of disk space is a good thing when it comes to that.
