I don't agree with 100% of the data in this thread, but of course it's from circa 2006, so allot of the innovations players made in more recent years (players like myself included) may or may not be mentioned.
nor is there high level super detailed usage instructions for each of these units etc, maybe one day ill end up smashing through and modding the whole thing for every single hint and trick i know for every single unit (yikes)
I'm getting more and more excited to do a full run and get something on the board for ever single level. I can't wait to finish university hahaha. I wish there was more people i could drag into TotalA speed running
Just had a quick play around with the first 4 missions. Got very close to Lag.Coms 7 minute mission 4. sadly my final report is due next tuesday, but u might see a full run just to set some base times maybe within a week or 2 of that. Hopefully that will get some increased interest in this game haha. i wonder though about doing +10 or +0 game speeds though. u can certainly play WAY more efficiently on +0, but i guess that's the challenge really : learn to play faster. I find myself misclickign a whole lot, but i guess that just shows the times of myself becoming a programmer rather than pro gamer. one day the rust will fall off and a serious run will be posted. I hope we can get more people posting on this board!

While I think my mission 4 time is pretty good with that strategy, I've no idea if that's the fastest strategy. Keep at it Smiley
Yeah, the concept of flash smashing is pretty effective on allot of land maps pre aircraft. I'm using an oldschool multiplayer strat of 1 construction with commander guarding out flashes, then like 5 or 10 flashes building annother construction. The con vehicals are used to follow around the flashes, the first one reclaiming all the metal so production doesnt stop, the second to build metal deposits and whatnot. Commander usually just chills out for most of the level building new plants / guarding / making solars. Then as the flashes start getting close to done with the main  base near the enemy vehical plant, i send the com out to start dgunning LLTs as they tend to eat flashes. it just feels more efficient. hopefully i can get a close to if not sub 7 minute strat and then start recording again. guess i should do the other levels too. Also for Mission 3, you can have the spiders move from the start, if they hang out close enough to the waters edge, or in the water itself, they tend not to die. just have to check with very precise timings to see if using the water slows them down too much.

************** there is a pretty powerful glitch in this game also. the "Holy shit why is my health bar so big now" glitch.
it happens when a D-Gun clips any unit in the game in just the right way and just the right amount. i have no idea how to replicate it, but i've seen it with my own flashes as well as enemy units. I think if someone learnt how to do this consistantly they could save some decent chunks of time just by exploiting the huge health gains of the units. i guess it might be a case of hitting the right negative HP or something, i have no idea...

i think mission 8 is only a capture mission too, so that one should be able to be made pretty fast. certainly alot faster than the "kill everything and then move in" strat haha

the first Sea mission soaks up quite a bit of time, basically use the same strat as with mission 4, except i build 1 con vehical, then reclaim the plant, and do similar things with ships. just guarding out crusaders and having con ships reclaim the entire time or as much as possible. Planning optimal attack routes for levels like this will take me quite a while, but  there needs to be routes around the map where with a crusader or 2 you can get some kills done without wasting time waiting for critical mass.

i guess just writing out the actual mission objectives in a list wouldnt be a bad idea, should i put that on the strat wiki? or just keep it to forums posts? im kinda new to this.

I'm not sure if I have my old "make an annotated map from a TotalA level" program anymore... I'll have a look later. Would be nice to have a full set of levels rendered for individual level wiki pages.
Yo that would be pretty great. it would certainly make planning easier haha. so far its a bit like "oh shit there are warlords there? restart"
I've found some more "fast" missions that are in the game EG just capture stuff to win missions

mission 9, and 11 can be done with just captures and not building anything, so can 15 as u already are aware

technically u can do it on mission 8 as well but it too me 37 minutes of game time to actually pull this off haha

starting to take down my times now and will start recording / putting up videos of all these maps pretty soon. will also be doing a live stream once ive got a few more down haha

Done a semi segmented run of the ARM missions, attached image has my times so far... also recorded them all so will post those up soon. times are in game time, so real time is roughly half

ahh crap, my recordings of 17 to 22 have no sound.... ugh...

yah, it was totally a sense of "get shit shit on the board" rather than getting it 100% optimised. that will come later 1 mission at a time haha. i think the only time that can be "beaten" is mission 3, but thats with some flukes / allot of micro. the rest of the missions i know i can cut allot of time off, it was just setting a pace and getting some feel for the fastest strats. I'm currently encoding my run in a segmented sense, nothing official. once i have a little more time ill start taking care of everything a little more efficiently and officially, and maybe even sigle segment runs. but yeah.... hope u like what ive done once it comes out. it has a long way to go before it's "fast"
i could probly wipe half an hour or so off the run in total, in retro spect, i know i already have faster runs on some of the shorter missions (vengeance for example i have a run which is between 10 and 12 seconds shorter)
it's a shame i lost so many levels to having no sound in the recordings. but no doubt that will all be replaced in future runs.
i think for the most part it's a case of optimising builds that i did in the run itself. aka just building more hawks instead of 2 berthas, in the case of one level at least
but will deff get this run allot closer to 3 hours for sure. and i think if i can get sub 3 in a single segment will be the time when i know i have a world recordi can be proud of haha
The first (and kinda dirty) segmented run is up. Will be working on this run level by level to get this shit optimized. Even some of the strats I used can be excicuted much better, but I'm still pretty fresh as far as playing the game is concerned still, so we'll get there
Why not do ILs?
I have been, just wanted to give/get a sorta broad overview. discovering which levels can be done with starting units alone, that kind of thing. I kinda like the idea of doing it in single segment, but ur right, it will be a case of level by level when i get some more time. Currently in Job hunt mode since im not going to be a student any more /cry
Yeah was just wondering since I'm the IL kind of guy - I like to see optimized levels which use risky strats and stuff like that. In any case, this is one helluva project considering the amount of missions and their length. I mean I knew the campaign was long but 3 hours for the Arm campaign alone and then there's Core too, that's the longest RTS game I can think of, hopefully you'll make good progress Cheesy
Haha cheers man, thanks for the support. yeah eventually it's going to be huge to think of the whole game, it's something like 75 missions all up, not including battle tactics, and allot of those take ~30 minutes of game time at the moment ,so 15 of real time, and thats without planning or resets or anything. so this could indeed turn into quite the massive project, but eventually i feel it can be pretty fast. the dangerous strat maps are the easiest to cut time down on, down the point of, if ur commanders not mobving, ur doing it wrong. other than that its a slog of, what is a faster way i can do a long game plan for this. no idea if it has any substance to it as a stream, but thats something else ill need to look into, maybe a weekend or after work type thing could work
