So, I've just recently finished The Longest Journey, and they weren't joking about the name, jesus christ

I thought about doing a speedrun of it, but I dunno how good I'd be at it...

anyone else here want to try it? I'll still attempt to get a good run of it anyways, but most people on this board would be better than me =p
Thread title:
give me your eyes!!!
I'd enjoy watching this game again, I completed it quite a while ago but it was interesting. It would be more at home at adventure-speedruns though. I don't think it would require much planning, everywhere's fairly straight forward. Weren't there two ways of completing the first part? If so that'd need looking into... and the island you wash up on is quite complicated if I recall correctly.

Good luck with your attempts!

I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Funnily enough, I've considered doing a speedrun of this also - mainly because I only just installed it again a fortnight ago!. Perhaps I will give it a go this evening and see how fast each of the chapters can be done (for me).

edit: I think this particular advent game could be a good addition to the archive because I think one could complete it in under and hour, and for a game that sells itself as "the longest journey" thats kinda funny.

edit2: Had a quick mess around, luckily the first four chapters are so embedded in my brain (from years ago) that i didnt make too many cock ups. I have no recording device as of yet, i hear fraps is good? these are times i took on my phone stopwatch (hhaa)

prologue: 1.07
chap1: 7.02
chap2: 8.12
chap3: 12.54
chap4 9.54

Its going to be more than an hour Sad
It's an adventure game, so I don't think SDA would accept it. But it's a game I need to complete myself. I'm missing a part to the Dreamfall storyline.

Adventure Speedruns
Hey everybody.

@ Qrimmer: Fraps is the tool you have to use. Camtasia mostly works with ScummVM, but you can try to use both.

Because SDA doesn't host Adventure Games I invented Adventure-speedruns.com, so I will host such games.

TLJ would be great if anyone runs it. I'm interested how fast this "Longest Journey" can be done. Wink
I just want to say that I'm also interested in seeing a speedrun of this game, good luck to anyone who's going to do it Smiley
Adventure Speedruns
I SAY GO FOR IT.

This game should be definatlely speedrunned. Smiley

I would run this game, only problem is that when I use Fraps the game slows down to a crawl (even though I have 3 Gig of RAM and quad core processor) which makes it extremely irritating to play... I have the old 4 CDs version which doesn't very much like XP...

If anybody here knows an efficient method to record without using Fraps, I'd be happy to try to speedrun this game... I've finished this game more than 10 times and know it practically by heart... if one quickly clicks through all necessary conversations and simply avoids all unnecessary ones, I reckon this game could be finished in less than 2 hours.

Maybe that IS the reason for the slowdown, a too new system Wink And maybe also that it doesn't like XP. You could try to change the compatibility mode of the EXE and change it to Win95 or 98 or something.

Also, you could try using Camtasia to capture the game, maybe that works.

Hi.

Great to see that someone will run this game. Awesome.

Good recording tools are rare, but there are some.
+ Fraps really slows down the system. You should not use it without a really fast machine.
+ ZD Games Recorder. This is my really big favorit. In combination with XVid it's a really mighty bundle. I would take this for your speedrun.
+ GameCam. It's a quite nice package, but not as good as ZD Games Recorder.

Try ZD for your record, I am sure, this will help you.

Let me know if it worked.

Good luck for your speedrun of the "longest" journey.  Grin
Hi again,

I did runs of the first few chapters but problem is that my 4 CD version likes to crash on Vista quite a few times, making it really a hassle to run it.
Adventure Speedruns
Great to hear that the recording worked. Which programm have you chosen for your recording?

Does a patch for Vista exist? Try to search the net, maybe you are lucky and find what you are looking for.

I whish you luck for your next chapters. Keep on running. :-)
Hi im new to speed running and looking for somthing to run and The Longest Journey came to mind im will to give it a try ill have ot see how well my comp can work it im runnnig the steam version and i havent realy tryed recording befor but ill look in to it and see what i can get to work so ill start practicing and looking into wha ti can do about recording. Should i manage to get somthing where should i post it to?
You might wanna think about just posting it in this very thread first: that way someone may take a look at it and give you feedback before any submissions. As for recording: submit a test clip on the Tech Support forums to get A/V feedback so you'll know you've got no issues there.

Even though adventure game runs are simple in execution, make sure to do as much pre-placement of the cursor (i.e. point it BEFORE you appear on the next screen) as you can, especially if you can immediately give the next command on the next screen as I suspect was the case with this game. It's a really long run, so if you forget where you needed to be sometimes it's not such a big deal, but in principle you should just aim to do anything and everything in your power to save even little bits of time everywhere.

Or you can segment your run, in which case you can help any RNG (there isn't any though?), and will only have to memorize a portion of it at a time, but at that point you're basically expected to have no major mistakes at all.

An example of good adventure game execution by someone who's done lots of them.

Also remember to check any and all walkthroughs, FAQs, existing runs etc. to make sure you're not missing any alternative solutions or weird glitches that even adventure games can sometimes have. You should supplement this knowledge with testing the game in various ways on your own: for example try to find if there's undocumented keyboard shortcuts.

If you do all that, it's not difficult to get the run accepted. Good luck! I'll promise to watch some of whatever you end up posting here (but it'll take you a good while to get all this done)
Thanks for all the info ill do my best and ill doa  playthough befor hand make sure i have all the puzzle solutions down and make sure i know what "info gathering" steps i can and cannot skip. Might be a little while befor i can get anything up lot going on right now but ill try ot get on it.
"might be a little while" - I know someone who's been running the same series for 17 years. Smiley Yes, it takes time in any case. Have fun!
Ok im hunkering down and working on learning the run makeing notes got a person who also loves the game interested in help with some of the grunt work. Sorry if this isnt ok to post but i have a discord server set up if any of you would liek to come discuss the run here is a link that should work https://discord.gg/NcApv.
