Psonar has beaten StrangenessDSS's red line run (Normal Difficulty) by 77 seconds.  Here is the video. Enjoy!  (Btw, you need to see how good this guy is; check out the other thread's first post for a bunch of practice videos, including a video of the first time he beat TSA's SDA record.)

Beaten by 77 seconds?  Uh...according to my timing, he's 2:01 slower than her and 26 seconds slower than me.

Oh geezus, ANOTHER run video?  I saw one up earlier and thought it was that.  Now you have this old man confused. -_-;;

According to windows media player, his time is indeed over a minute faster (just check the times as Fox emerges and geysers from Andross's tunnel).  Though, this was just a practice video for him; I believe he intends to improve it.  Btw, he beat TSA's record with a time of 25:41, slightly more than a minute and a half faster. But the best news is he's run the whole game on expert mode getting all medals in an hour and a half!!! Though, he plans to cut a smidgeon more time from even that.  I don't mean to to boast on his behalf or anything; I'm just particularly excited he's made such improvements on the already existing runs.

Long live SF64!
Thanks for the support Insipid, and for your interest SirVG.  I looked at those times and you've got the wrong video.  The video you timed was me practicing on getting all the medals in Expert mode (sf64_speedrun_redline.practice2.wmv).  The correct video is linked in InsipidMuckyWater's post and the complete url is: http://www.archive.org/download/StarFox64SpeedRun100SSPractice/SF64_redline.normal.nocredits_3611.wmv

You'll know the difference immediately as I kill minimal enemies in the 36:11 vs. the other where I medal on each level.  I checked the download link and it is the correct file.  I'd be happy to supply the level splits once I've downloaded it myself (I'm at work...).  Thanks for the interest and I'm sorry for time wasted on the wrong video!  My files should be named more distinctly since I'm doing 3 different runs for the same game, my bad.

I was going to post about my time myself, but InsipidMuckyWater beat me too it.  Since I'm only 11 seconds off I figured I'd go for sub-36:00.  I haven't critiqued it yet so I'm not sure where I lost time, but SY boss, Aquas boss, and Star Wolf always leave time for improvement, so I'm sure its possible.  Maybe my video can help others improve their times?  I started by watching StrangenessDSS's and she did many things I hadn't thought of, and even things I've yet to do correctly.  Let's work together and see how low we can get it if you're interested...

EDIT: Awesome Google Spreadsheet! You rock for employing it!  I've yet to take the time to try it myself, but it seems to be doing it's job!  If you want me to take the splits of my run, you can let me edit the file online to give Google a full test run.

Just to throw an update into this topic, my current best Single Segment playthrough of the game getting all 15 medals in Expert Mode contains a redline run of about 35:43.

Click here for the full video (SS 100% 1:24:51; Redline portion: 35:43)

Please forgive the quality, it's a sample video made with a webcam.  If there's a request for it I'll crop the redline part and make a seperate video of just the relevant material.

Here's the time splits from the redline portion:

I'm still not sure if I'll ever submit something in this category, but I thought I'd put my new fastest redline in here to keep the topic updated.  If it had not been Expert, if I'd not medaled each level, done the Sector Y boss better, hadn't braked in Aquas, and killed Andross quicker, it might could have been 30-45 seconds faster still.

Fricken sweet man.  I think this should be classified as a catagory, since Red Line contains some of the hardest challenges in the game (mainly Zoness to shoot all those damn spotlights).  While people may say a Blue Line is also worthwhile, that run is more debatable since there are split routes which you can choose to wind up on Blue Line no matter how you play it.

But Red Line it's you're awesome or run over.  And it also contains the best ending, which you don't get to see in the "optimal route" runs.

But that's just my opinion.

As for the spreadsheet I did, I figured out it was the wrong video AFTER the fact, hence I scratched out my line.

This makes a lot of since.  I'll point out that Wikipedia's article on Star Fox 64 divides the routes into redline, blueline, and mixed.  The widely held notion that redline is the hardest route and the fact that redline and blueline are completely exclusive after Corneria, and that redline and the optimal route share almost nothing make redline an obvious choice for another category.

I would also like to point out though that there are lots of paths that intermingle with both redline and blueline...here's a list of all 25 paths, starting with redline and working down successively to blueline:

I just wanted to show all possible runs for the sake of discussion.  The thing that is unattractive to me about redline is that for any normal run we allow there must be an expert version allowed as well.  This would mean at least 5 categories as it stands:

1. Optimal/minimalist/any%/pure speed
2. Expert Optimal
3. Redline
4. Expert Redline
5. 100% Single Segment (Expert Mode all 15 medals)

This leads me to want to eliminate category 3 and just have expert redline.  That comment was made earlier in this topic and I think that would be a worthwhile added stipulation.  If an Expert run were done though, a lower difficulty would then be accepted by default anyway, so I don't guess it really matters...

I do like that it has the best ending and it contains the final Star Wolf showdown and such.  That just makes it awesome right there!

My apologies for any harshness towards you about that.  I made my point a bit too firmly.  I really appreciate that you even took the time to make that spreadsheet!

Serisously I love your work on the redline stuff, especially since I might not have ever done a run if I hadn't found this topic first!

If you'd like I can try to make my 100% run a double submission and quote Nate the times for just the redline portion too.  My run includes all the medals and is in expert mode so it's not really what the run is supposed to look like.  I wasn't sure what folks would think about having a minimal run up that intentionally does things to make it slower than minimal.  If you object to this I probably won't record a redline run because I've decided to stop running Star Fox 64 due to other important things in life and whatnot.

Anyone have any thoughts?
Fucking Weeaboo
Well, the issue with making the 100% Medals run count double as your red line run is that having the medals appear on screen counts against your time.  Granted it's not a lot as you only have 5 appearances (I don't believe you see one for Area 6 and I know you don't for Venom).  So for a red line run to be purely optimal, you technically have to get no medals.

Granted, I understand that's a lot of extra running to do, but I'm sure you can do it.  You're making much more progress at this than I could.

Well, I'm a sucker for encouragement... I read your post and went to record.  After several retries I managed a 35:53.

Very Random Comments:
I had a hard time of the bosses in Sector Y and missed a few shots on the Zoness boss.  I didn't do the crazy 3 tentacles in one appearance thing on Area 6 like in my 100% run, but I tried!  Star Wolf eluded me for 10 seconds or so, but then I got a rythme going and wasted them.  Andross could've been a cleaner kill, but no major flukes.  The exit went very well.  Zoness searchlights went well.  Aquas boss was very smooth.  Sector Z wasn't optimal, but it was close...it's hard to make the strafing run on the missiles with perfect timing because of the edge of the level.

I'll see if I can bundle this in with my other runs and see what Radix thinks about the category.  Based on the popularity of this topic alone and the explanations for it, I'd say he'll accept.

Maybe once you see it you'll learn how to come back and own it SirVG!
Fucking Weeaboo
Sounds like you had a great run.  Given that you're running this all on Expert instead of me and Strangeness on Normal, you've made the already difficult route all that much harder, yet you're STILL doing well.

I'm sure Radix will accept.  Granted yes there are a ton of different routes you can do on this game, and like other games (for instance, Super Metroid) I know not all of them will be accepted.  But I'm sure playing the game on the hardest route (which one screwup can end the run) will be a great catagory for the site.  Radix is a smart guy and I'm sure he'll see this too.

Can't wait to watch your run!
Long live SF64!
Oops, I just ran it on Normal since I was just trying to get it done quick and simple... if Expert would be really impressive though maybe I could do that too?  Perhaps I'll just leave that as a hole in the current runs for someone else to do...

My Normal run shows how hard an Expert run is though because it contains 4 or 5 collisions that each would've nearly ended a good Expert run.  I can't explain my frustration when a run is marred by losing a wing from colliding with a jumping brine shrimp on Zoness

I'm composing an e-mail now that will have my comments for my pure speed run, but will then ask Radix about submitting my 100% run and the Redline run.  I'm hoping he'll just say, yep sounds good, submit them all together!  Saves on postage too maybe!
Long live SF64!
Ok, now I'm finally officially done running this game!

I did an Expert Redline run in 35:30!

This is what I'll submit if/when I get a go from Radix.  I think sub-35 is barely doable, but would take more like 100 tries compared to my 20 or so total attempts.

It should be a good watch if it goes up.  It contains a few obvious mistakes but is solid overall and awesome at times.  It feels good to feel like I'm finally done!

Not discrete enough. ^^

Great run, BTW.  I have been p0wned.

why is it that when fox is going from SY-AQ  that he only has 99 kills.  I notised that when i last saw him have 89 kills then when he kills the final boss he gets +10 hits to make his total 99 kills when it says that he needs 100+ to get to AQ from SY.  Thanks for letting me ask and thanks for responding
You get 1 hit for killing the boss and then the +10 bonus.  So all in all killing that boss nets you 11 hits.  89+11=100, so you go to Aquas.
Fucking Weeaboo
The +10 is a bonus for killing a boss fast enough (this figure though varies, depending on the boss and the time it took you to kill it).  Killing the boss itself is always 1 point.
Thanks for clarifying that for me.  I forgot that you got one kill for the boss even thought you get one per kill you make none boss enemies oh and btw i'm not a guest it just says i am because i forgot my log on user name and i'm looking for it now.
