Yeah pretty much. There are probably more that I'm not noticing, but as far as the redline path that's the only thing that's really popped out to me when watching 0x's streams.

Well that is nothing ground breaking then compared to some games.

Yeah he's mostly gaining time from faster boss kills that I've shown him and lag reduction strats involving that he looks away from laggy things with first person view. Also keep in mind Psonar played his redline route run in expert mode, so he took the Starwolf fight very carefully so he didn't break a wing, which is another source of time 0x is gaining over the run.

Ugh... safe strats

I ended up playing this a little this weekend and got a new redline route run.

This is ~0:27 faster than the run 0xwas got, which isn't including the advantage that the JP version has in Corneria. I'm pretty sure sub 34 is actually doable for a redline route run, which I didn't even think was doable before I did this. I'm actually kind of surprised I cut that much time off of 0xwas's run to be honest.

Would the run be faster if you stayed in first person view?

The advantage of first person view is that you can focus the screen on a certain point, which you can direct away from stuff that lags, like explosions, large objects, ect. The cockpit graphic that you see when you're in first person mode (and can see in the youtube image for my video above) is a fairly big object that the N64 has to deal with. It's slower in general if you stay in first person for the entire duration of an Arwing section than if you were to just have a normal view of the level because of that, so you need to pick and choose when you go into first person or not depending on how the game lags. Granted, I could've probably been in first person in a few more places to reduce more lag, but switching from the 2 can be disorienting, so I usually just did it whenever I knew the game lags hard otherwise. I'll probably try it in more places to see where else it would save time.

Have you tested it in any way?

Yeah, I usually get a couple of seconds slower with first person on completely... at least on N64 anyways. I'd imagine Virtual Console would eliminate the lag problem completely. I'd rather not switch to VC yet though because 1) it's still a somewhat fair comparison to 0xwas's run if it's on N64, and 2) VC controls are kind of slippery and make precise shots a little more taxing.

Fair enough

I think we should have like, a universal agreement to never use the VC version of SF64 for speedrunning, ever

Hah, funny that this ended up being the last post in this thread, because it looks like that isn't the case anymore...

Did this run in response to Pottoww's 25:00 VC run that he got recently. This time will probably go down soon, as Pottoww mentioned he aims to beat this run soon.

Got pretty decent boss fights all around, but Bolse gave me abnormally good enemy spawn luck that I used to get the core to spawn almost immediately.

This run is being submitted.

Here's an update to this thread to show the status of all the categories in this game at the moment.

Any% got a facelift after I discovered a way to kill the Katina hatches early. If you kill at least 2 hatches before the cutscene starts, the remaining hatches will stay open, which lets you kill them asap and bomb the core. This is ~20-30 seconds faster than the Fortuna route because Star Wolf doesn't appear until 1:30 into the level, while the mothership dies by that time. So far the WR is 24:12, but I think this will probably go down to sub 24 soon. Pottoww seems to be diligently on the case.

Redline is still 34:11, but stivitybobo seems to have picked this category up and has gotten really close to the record, beating 0xwas even! There's a good chance this will go down soon if he keeps it up! I'm probably going to pick up the category again since it will likely be the alternative to a score run for AGDQ and I need to be in practice for it.

100% hasn't seen any action since Psonar's 1:24:52 run in 2006, but I've recently been testing out theoretical strats on some levels to potentially cut significant amounts of time. I found a way to use the appearance of Star Wolf in Bolse to my advantage by collecting at least 33 of their points so I don't have to spend significant time chasing enemies for points like the old run did. I also found a different route that seems to be solid for bomb management to execute pretty much all the tricks from the other runs (Fortuna Star Wolf kill, Sector Y quick kill, Area 6 fast orb kills, ect). I tried to complete a run just to see if my strats hold any water, and well, 1:21:55 seems to suggest they do. The run had alot of really strong boss fights. The only things that went significantly wrong were that I got robbed of 2 missiles in Sector Z and had to think on the fly to save the attempt, and I lost a wing halfway through the Area 6 boss fight (which hurt the Venom II Star Wolf fight). I'm gonna give this category a rest for a bit, just because AGDQ practice will be top priority for me for the next few months.

Been a while, but I recently got back around to this game briefly to update the 100% run. I got one that I'm pretty happy with to submit.

It's pretty crazy to think a speedrun category in Star Fox 64 was able to be improved by over 6 minutes, but here we are. This is improvable, but I got most of everything I really wanted out of the category. My only regrets were not getting the fastest kills for the Zoness, Sector Y, and Fortuna bosses. However, I got the most ridiculous Bolse, as well as the double 1 cycle on the Area 6 boss tentacles, and I never lost my wings at a point that cost me time, just places where I could recover them before they were needed, or places where they didn't even matter. The biggest thing I wanted out of this category was suub 1:19, and I'm glad I got a run that pulls it off!

As far as an update for the other SF64 categories that SDA tracks, Dsx and firehawkrise pushed any% to sub 23 which is pretty crazy, and Redline is 32 minutes on the iQue version of the game. Uncertain if either person is planning on submitting anything for those runs, although dsx submitted a 23 minute run to SDA a while ago, which is still a nice update.
Long live SF64!

I'm doing my once-every-5-years look around the SF64 scene and was surprised to see this update! I thought my 100% would hang around in relative obscurity for longer, but I underestimated you!  Good stuff!  I'm kinda mind boggled that any% is down to sub-23 - I read about the hatches trick so I know that helps.  I only spent like a week on mine to beat the drunken joke of a run that was up before so I'm not surprised in the following 10 years that people have honed in on the perfect run.

Glad to see I set a precedent for RTA with my 2 resets.  I think the fact that it was submitted on VHS tapes actually added credibility because it'd be much harder to fake since you'd see artifacts in the recording.  I see SirVG and InsipidMuckyWater both mentioned my run in an RTA-related thread, though it seems games that use reset to greater effect for warp/glitch got more attention.

Thanks for the shoutout in your comments!  Ironically I'm now casually playing through Star Fox Assault working on gold medals and such.  I'll always love space games - I'm now an aerospace engineer doing propulsion analysis at NASA, so I basically became Slippy... anyways - nice to see a familiar name around!

It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since my Star Fox 64 days!  Hello to anyone still here from back then!
I don't know if it's just me but I can't consistently skip the little cutscenes before the actual levels begin. I was wondering if there was something specific I should be doing or is this just an RNG based thing?
just( •_•)>⌐■-■ ..... (⌐■_■)wing it
You have to beat the game first, any subsequent play through lets you skip them
You got a deletion wish?
^^ this also includes first time through any level after resetting the data.
