I have never heard anyone besides me that has owned this game, and I am currently trying to 'route' it. I don't have a lot of time in my day, so i can only play 2-3 hours each time. Im at Waral right now and here is what I can say.

Max, Luke, and Zylo are your big hitters.
Balbaroy and Kokichi fly around and poke people.
Mae is better than Ken.
Archers are terrible.
In the Epilogue chapters, just kill Narsha.
Whenever there is an option to seize an area before killing all enemies, do it.
I didn't use Pelle, he might be good? Same with Arthur and Earnest.
I got Gort, and I would use him. He is very useful.
For Bosses, I would wait like 1-2 turns so everyone is in the same area, then I'd just rush the boss. Probably not the fastest method but its safe.
Anri is ok at first, but she just never gets better so you replace her with someone.
Domingo is good, i usually rush the boss when he is almost out of mp, since he is practically useless once he is out.
Lowe and Khris are your two healers, khris is better than lowe, but lowe learns detox, which is awesome.
I havent gotten there yet, but you will want need Hanzou and Musashi.
I promote all of my characters at the beginning of chapter 5 after the battle with the conches, as that is where you start to get all of the promoted only items.
Zylo slows down after promotion...?
Mawlock is probably useful, Im not using him though. I need to know all of the 'good' cards, like ones that attack or boost stats.
There are a lot of stat boosting items, which is awesome. it prevents characters from falling behind.
Tao is weak, you are gonna have to guard her well or give her lots of stat boosts, and i tried the latter and it aint working too hot.
I sometimes go multiple battles without reviving a character, just replace them for a few battles ( i used Diane on the laser eye fight Shocked shocking)
Speaking of which, I waited for the laser eye to fire, I dont know if its worth risking going immediately.
Dont let characters fall too far behind, the healers always do but should be lvl 10 by ch. 5.

My Idea for a final team: Max Domingo Hanzou Musashi Kokichi Luke Mae Khris Lowe Balbaroy Gort Zylo - Will edit in future maybe
Update: Zylo sucks. give him the boot.
Musashi needs agility ring.
Kane is tough if you dont have a good idea of what your doing
only supernova on bosses
Be mindful of Domingo's MP.
A LOT of your units will start falling behind, you only really good ones are domingo hanzou and musashi, your main hero is ok if you use him a lot.
Team Idea 2: Max, Luke, Tao, Mae, Musashi, Hanzou, Domingo, Khris Lowe Balbaroy Kokichi and a knight, arthur or Earnest most likely.

I will update more once i play later, but leave your suggestions too!

Everyday is puppies and sunshine...
I've beaten the original dozens of times and finished the Solo Max challenge, but I have also beaten the GBA remake twice so I'm not totally ignorant.  My initial instinct, and it could be wrong and I hope others correct me quickly, is that your plan for the ideal team has too many characters, which will also affect your route overall.  Each character provides an extra target for monsters which means extra battle scene and extra user input and more variables to consider.  Cutting characters from the roster will save time, but it will also require a lot of more route work.

I did a run of the original with my son earlier in the year that used only six characters and it was, to my surprise, not much slower.  Would have been much faster if I actually planned a route and had a better understanding of the inner mechanics.  I wasn't expecting to beat it so quickly, but because of the extra experience and a later promotion they became a team of beasts quite quickly.

The thought of using less characters has definitely crossed my mind multiple times. The problem is this game is quite a bit different than sf1, enemies and balance wise. I will have to check but i think it would be practically impossible to use less characters as they would get bodied by dark dragon. In order to beat dd quickly, you need like 3-4 members on each head. If you only use 6, they would need to run around and poke each head, and they might tun out of healing items. Who would we use if it was possible? They would need to be early game characters so they keep up, so maybe max luke mae khris idk gort and ken?? Id have to do more testing but i am fairly confident this will be the case.

Edit, the thought of Mainly using Your hero and like Luke or something from the stat and then using Domingo Hanzou and Musashi really intersts me now, might try that later run.

Edit edit: Tried it, Elliot is impossible. you just cannot handle all of the lizardmen and pegasus knights at once. Sad

Everyday is puppies and sunshine...
I do remember the Elliot fight being the one major problem.  Everything else was puppies and sunshine through pretty much the rest of the game, but Elliot's stage is just utterly huge.  It wasn't terrible in the Solo Max run because by that point I think I had promoted and made it to level 4 or 5 (the real mess of the Solo Max was the circus) and everything did one damage.  A possibility might be whether or not you can have a decoy squad and a small, genuine attack force that heads down south and around.

Also, what is the current RTA strategy for Elliot for SF on Genesis?  That part of the forum has been pretty active recently.

I didnt use a decoy team, as i felt like it would slow it down too much. Im not sure what you mean for the strategy, but you just bum rush all the enemies and use mae pelle kokichi and ken to snipe elliot from afar.

I need to test out the knights, I dont know how pelle arthur or earnest hang up but i think arthur probably isnt worth it as he is optional and you have to go kind of out of your way to get him.
