I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
zoonel - that's a good idea.  I'll have to see if it's worth going for it over Lightning Bolts.  Honestly, turn 2 or 3 Bolt kills might be quicker (real-time wise) than turn 1 kills that make you play a lot of spells and cycle through your deck.

Also, I just had a "duh" moment: instead of going for Time Vaults for the final boss, I can just take out my Ball Lightnings for Marsh Vipers! The only reason for the Vaults is to keep a clear path with no interference for your creatures to swing through, and Bolts can get rid of creatures easily anyway. This will speed up the run immensely if it works.  I'll try it out on one of my other saves.

Legion - there aren't really any infinite combos available in the cardpool (up through The Dark).  Channel/Fireball is the only old banned combo from this pool I can think of, and it won't kill someone with more life than you.  The only one I can think of would be a very complicated Timetwister deck, and that would be about as hard to put together as the Vaults.
You should post this question of the "optimum deck for the task" in one of the big magic forums.  I bet the type 1 fans there would have fun working on this problem.
Go play spacechem !

I'm not a good magic player, i just can't make very good decks :bawl: The one i proposed is the only one i 've found that is fully buyable, relatively cheap and that has good odds for a 1 turn kill. I just focus on beating the wizards and arzakon, avoiding all other fight as possible. And with 7 life it is very difficult to win against decks that starts with an hypnotic specter or the nasty creatures they start with, so i choose the one turn victory ^^. Also you spare the opponent play time . And i like black more than red :p

Can you gave us or me the deck you will use? or this is a secret we will see when the run is done ^^
I do'nt see how you can beat the 45 life wizards with only lightning bolt or ball lighting Huh?
Don't forget that blue castle has leviathan in play, and the wizard can cast twiddle :p (anyway prepare to fight the 10/10 creature turn 2), also the white castle has the 5/5 creature and they like to play the +1/+2 card on them.

Good luck for the run.

That's a good point.  Being able to avoid all the duels but the wizard castles would make things a lot faster, and that deck does seem much better vs the Wizards, then again, much worse against the final boss.

My final deck will look something like:

18 Mountain
2 Mishra's Factory
24 Lightning Bolt
8 Ball Lightning
1 Wheel of Fortune (hopefully)
3 Black Vise
1 Shivan Dragon (for the dice)
3 other

but I will give your deck a try.  It does seem like a good plan.
Word.
I'm at work today, and I have a program on a memory stick called Magic The Gathering: Workstation. I'm going to eliminate all sets after The Dark, and see if I can't cook something up...

Don't count on it though. When I played Shandalar, I used green and red beats, with lots of Giant Growths, a few Giant Strengths, and mana producing creatures like BoP and Llanowar Elves, in an effort to get out Force of Nature quickly...

I know, nothing fancy, but I was young... this was like 6 or 8 years ago... >_>

Word.
Well, I looked at it, and it's really tough to figure out a deck that will work quickly, and be relatively easy/quick to get cards for. The problem with the above black deck, is the sheer volume of cards needed to make it work. When I was looking at the options, though this is a great idea, it would be hard to find the cards in-game (at least if I remember correctly), and it would be tough to win duels to get the cards... Also, the damage/mana use is not nearly as good as a mono-red burn deck, nor the damage/card. It seems to be, the best option, is probably just a mono-red burn deck, along the lines of Lightning Bolt... The problem with the mono-red burn deck is that it is tough to find the mana base to cast the bolts quickly, and once you run out of burn cards, it's tough to draw more quickly...

So, might I suggest adding some Howling Mines to your Decklist? This would compliment both the Black Vice's, and help you get through your deck quicker, avoiding mana-screw, and letting you draw more cards to attack your opponent. Yes, it helps your oppenent too, but since your goal is just to deal as much direct damage to them as quickly as possible, I don't think it would hurt too much. The worst part about it, would be your oppenent would be more likely to be able to play cards, and you would therefore have to wait longer for their turn to end...

Just a thought.

Probably better than Mine would be splashing Black with Swamps or hopefully City of Brass (Badlands are pretty hard to come by unless you want to drop three amulets on them and I don't) and playing Contract from Below.

I think I'm going to start over tonight, get a Red deck (for the Mountains, mainly) with a few Swamps in it to start.  Then I'll use zoonel's idea of avoiding all battles and just buying/selling my way to a deck.

I also realized that I can drop everything from my deck but junk and off-color basic land (to get to minimum deck size, I think it's 25 or 35 in this game).  Then if I can't avoid a battle, I'll just accept it (no money wasted on bribing him that could go to cards), concede right away, and not lose anything important to ante.

Uggggh

I just played back one of my segments.  Apparently no matter what FPS I set it at, it always records in 1.5 FPS which looks like crap and is too slow to capture all of what I'm doing.

I'm going to give up on this for now, and return to it when my younger brother goes to summer camp in a few weeks and I can use his (far superior) computer with an actual... like... video card.
the Watching Shadow
I had a similar problem with Lords of Magic: Special Edition (first Fraps not even recognizing it, then the first alternative I tried only recorded at 1 FPS).  I tried a program called CamStudio which I found works rather well with LOM:SE, and I think it might with Shandalar.  Only thing is, the recording from speakers thing is a bit finicky.  It works with my older laptop (win98 SE :P) but not with my desktop (winXP Pro).  Give it a try perhaps?

I saw this on youtube just now.  It's defeated in 20 minutes, including the 100-life endboss.

If you want to know his techniques without waching the video:

Start with red.  Sell most of the cards in your deck, for (1) fast cash to buy what's needed and (2) improve your dice odds.  The luck-based part of the run is needing to find a bazaar early on, but when you do, buy a Shivan.  You don't need any rare cards like Moxen etc, so you can skip the dungeons, and actually all random fights too.  Just run to the red castle, get some dice to start with the Shivan in play, and defeat the boss with it quickly.  Then repeat this for the other four castles.  Along the way, accumulate various midrange red creatures, cheap removal like Lightning Bolt and Immolation, and (a surprise mvp) Eternal Warrior.  These cards are all put into your deck against the end-game boss, which form a deck that, although not great, are capable of beating him.  Keep in mind that you don't have any dice in that match, so you have to play your deck out the fair way.

Those are actually two very different MtG-based games Smiley

I know what you mean, but no, that topic is actually about Shandalar.
I finally have a run I'm happy about. I've been grinding this for the past few months. I made it to the end game screen on Apprentice difficulty (any%) in 15:53.94 http://www.twitch.tv/theboyks/c/4219182. You get the same end game screen regardless of beating the final boss, so it's faster to concede to reach the end of the game.

You don't gain control of your character until after character creation. I restart the game after character creation due to it messing with my resolution (it turns into a small square on the top left of my screen), but it also makes a very good starting point for the run. The person who made that Youtube video is a dev who works on Shandalar over at http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=4213 and frequentish viewer of my stream. He saw me running the game in that manner and made the video for fun. It just so happened to be awesome! I've been tuning the strategy since. Any thoughts?
You guys know about the trick where you can save scum to always get what you want from the various random... caves and forest dens and things that give you cards? It's based entirely on what exact phase the timer (you can activate it somehow...) is at. Just saying this because the 20 minute run from YouTube isn't doing it. I guess it makes it RTA.
You can save before going into an event and then load until you get what you want. Considering that you need to find the castles anyways, it's worth exploring around the map I think. You might waste a bunch of time loading constantly until you get it anyways, but it's a neat trick.
Well, yes, but it's also cyclical, meaning if you save at a certain position of the timer that runs (I remember now) when you have an ongoing quest, you'll always get the same general kind of reward. So if you move at the earliest time from loading the game you know you're always getting the same type. Does that add anything?
Hm, that's interesting. I should mess around with some save manipulation and see if there's any merit. I normally skip quests altogether, but that might make it more consistent to get a Shivan. There're also some nice glitches you can do like tapping your opponents mana vault on their upkeep to make them take mana burn as well as the 1 damage a turn. Well, unless that doesn't work like I remember it working.
If you have a bit of inside knowledge on the game (any runner would) consider creating a Strategy Guide! It's fairly simple because you can just use any existing guide as a template, the mark-up is simple too. This one has the generic formatting according to the standard: https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Contra

Just replace "Contra" in the address with whatever this game is officially called and it'll ask you if you want to create that page.
I made a speedrun tutorial video, sadly, it's on twitch because Youtube won't let me upload videos cause I got a copyright strike 5 billion years ago.

Anyway, here it is:

Any questions, please ask me, we have 3 runners right now and we would love to get some more. It's a fun race game because it's really easy to pick up. Smiley
