Got a game coming up that I'd like to do a commentary on with others and I've never done one before so I wondered how do people do this?

I have a few questions I NEED answered;

What do you use to record the audio?
How to attach it to the finished submission?
How do you ensure everyone can see your finished run , do you send them all a copy of it or do you all watch it from a host site. (youtube etc)
Logistics (most people involved will be -7 to -9 hours behind me)

Or you can just explain your setups to me and I'll work from what you tell me Smiley

All the things
If you've got everybody in the same place at once, it's easier. Programs like Audacity are free and pretty functional for a lot of recording and editing; just watch the video through and you can trim it to appropriate lengths afterward.

If people are remote, things get a little more interesting. If you're using Skype, MP3 Skype Recorder and Callburner have worked well for me in the past. Callburner is trial-ware though, and may have issues with recent versions of Skype. TeamSpeak, Vent, or other VoIP software will have guides specific to them for recording calls.

Attaching it to finished submissions is very simple. Both anri and yua can do it easily, or you could simply upload the audio file and nate or somebody else will attach it to the final videos for you.

If you are trying to synchronize what you're watching with everybody else, just use a verbal countdown while everybody has a copy of the video file or at least a YouTube page for it open. You can trim out any unwanted content with Audacity. A difference of a second or two between different commentators won't be notable in the end.

In the end, do it any way you can. Just get the recording done, and then it can be edited to any appropriate length or otherwise.

thanks omni I'll play around with some stuff and see what works, and yeah everyone else is remote so interesting it shall be haha.
When we did the audio commentary for Youkai's new FFXII segmented run, we basically did what Omnigamer suggested.  Youkai set up a private youtube video, we all got on mumble, joined a private room, synced when we started the video, he recorded it using mumble and then edited it with (iirc) Audacity.  I have no experience with it personally but the encode turned out just fine.
Gets the cake.
When Sourceruns did commentary for Half Life 2 DWaHMoV, we all got into a skype call and started our own individual audacity recordings. We synced it up by clapping after a countdown, and then pressing play on the video at the same time. We also had someone in the call not participating in the commentary record the call audio as a backup in case anything bad happened. This is probably overkill, though =P
