Secret of Mana

Today was the last day i could do a attempt of speed run before the next months. I added all my tricks of run/way/training/fight and i die against thunder giga in pure land : my last char, the sprite, lost 929 HP with one hit not critical, it's a special capacity of the boss who doesn't cost MP :-[ :-[
Time played ( no save - single segment ) is :

Begin -) Thunder Giga = 4H49 :rockout: :banana: :banana: :banana:

It's the first time i find my run nice ( there aren't really mistakes ). Now i have a low level against Spikey Tigger, i have the 2 first magic under one hour if certains peoples want just to test the begin of the game and want to have an idea of they can do.

I don't use "bugs" on this part and i don't know what i will do for the last boss : to have a training before or to use bugs, what people prefers ? Without any bugs i can finshi it under 5H30, with bugs i don't know what i can do Huh?

And there are other bugs i can use ( there isn't only the bug for the final fight ).
Don't forget if you want training can be fast in Secret of Mana.

So what do you prefer, fans of secret of mana who wants to watch the vid :

1)Without Bugs -) my limit is 5H30.
2)With bug -) Perharps under 5H00.

Lol now i push alaways "select" in the run+training.

For the boss, in fact each boss has a specific timing for to be spamed ( i tell about the dangerous boss ), that depend of the AI, but i have these timings now ( a friend took the time to test each boss , especially the dragons of pure land, and my death against thunder giga is just stupid ).

On SDA, if you don't use an allowed bug that saves enough time, your run will generally be shot down by someone who does (unless the bug is very difficult to pull off, or you're running a really obscure game).

you'll see bros. i asked radix and the bug is legal. and if you want to, we can have a seperated run. AND ONE MORE THING. its not bug. its a glitch. a mistake in the game which you take advantage of. bugs are just mistakes.
Next time i can try is in 4 weeks because my whole stuff is packed ina huge rectangular prism-like container.. in other words im moving and all my stuff is packed up. but seiken and me are on it.

Hello

Majority of my exams are finished, before a few days/weeks i couldn't know that because i had finished my written examination but i didn't know when i had the next exams ( oral examination ), i'ts random, the date depend sometimes of the name of the students, sometimes not, but i had luck, it's pratically finished now Wink

So i will have the first run Wink

Actually i'm not sure for the bugs, because i know there are many bugs but i don't know it perfectly because i thought i could see it on the Krabbe's run.
I think he will explain me Wink

I will be able to record it in about 9-10 days because a friend will lend me the good equipement for it Wink

So while this time i will have training and in all honesty i think it's sure the run will be recorded for the two first weeks of July.

But i have now a new question : how i send a DVD/VHS to Radix ? At his home ( USA ) ? Or i must send it to a other person of SDA in Europe ?

I live in sweden. send a tape from here cost around 6 bucks. I don´t know how much it cost from French but it isn´t so important i think. Smiley

Secret of Mana

Well in fact for a single segment/without bug the time is more under 6H than under 5H30 Tongue

Final Boss is really a catastroph :
After Puritas, I return to Gaia for Sword level 4.
Then i go to the Mana Forteress. In fact +1 level = +1 power for the sword, so after you use mana sword +1 or +5 is the same thing, so i haven't really training in Mana Forteress, i just kill with Salamando the

because if i remenber good they have each 3700 EXP and can duplicate itself.
Recently i did with a little training: Randi/Level 46+Mana Sword+Moon Energy ( 2 spells )+Sword charged Level 4 = 450 HP and 999HP with critical hit.
But the big matter is Dryad of Purim/Popoie are at level 0 and i have just the time to charge the sword at level 4 and hit the Mana Beast, after that, magic is down, and i haven't the time to recharge the sword, so there are at least 10 cycles if i do each time a critical hit.
There is an other matter : sometimes, in fact often, 1 or 2 s after i do the combo dryad on Randi, magic is down Shocked

And if the Mana Beast does a Lucent Beam on Randi, i give him a candy or something like that but after that he hasn't the time to charge the sword ( magic is down ) so it's at each time a cycle moreover.

So Mana Beast takes really too time, i choice the bugs, but i have no news of Krabbe and i don't find the bug on the net, some sites presents lots of bugs of Secret of Mana but i didn't see the bug to kill the Mana Beast at level 40... I hope it isn't a stupid joke :-/
Krabbe can you just post this bug, it will takes only a few seconds...

There is perharps an other way to beat the game under 5H30 without the bugs, it's a few segments ( 5 or 6) Roll Eyes

Because recently i had really a crazzy idea ( it works ) for the beginning of the game :
A little training before Tropicallo ( Level 3 or 4 ), after that i don't buy the item for resurrection and armor for Popoie, just my 120+70 GP armors. I go to the castle without training and i keep Purim/Popoie dead before and while the fight with Spikey tigger, i just save in the castle with the swindler, it will be the end of my first segment. After that, i go to fight Spikey tigger and wait to have luck with it, i wait it doesn't go in the top of the room and spam me with the fire magic or special capacity. I think you can have this luck 1/10 of the time, so i restart often the game.
But the real interest is after : when you kill

, you have Undine, and a initial MP of 9 for Purim/Popoie so if you have a low level with Purim/Popoie it's the same thing, 9 MP. So Purim/Popoie are at level 1 and MP will up very fast, like the levels. And training of magic after that will be faster on a big part of the beginning of the game, because you go less often to the inn than with the standards MP.

Before the Ice palace, finally, i use undine to kill the dogs for to have about 3500 GP, it's in fact really very fast, after that i kill Boreal Face and abuse with Undine, i spam it all the time and use some nuts, after that i buy nuts with the swindler for to have max MP+4 nuts, after that i go to the Ice Palace and while the fight with the 3

, i abuse with Salamando, so it up at level 1, after that i spam Frost Gigas, level 1 is ok if you have nuts.

Oh, and finally for Puritas, i need only 1 nut, for the first boss, Dragon Worm, and finally i spam it with Thunder ( 4 MP ) and not the spell who costs 2 MP, it's really to dangerous ( you must wait the animation if finish for to spam it, ok there is a position for these spells for they begin very fastn but it's praticcaly impossible and very dangerous when the boss is moving and strong ). Sometimes i need a second nuts for Thunder Gigas, that depends of the degats of the spell, it's random.

Secret of Mana

Ok, after lots of attemps of recording, it's always the same matter, screen is trembling in all the directions, test of differents tv, it's always the same thing, i think the matter is Secret of Mana PAL 50 Hz and not 60 because i haven't matter with GC for example...
So i record on VHS.
Radix : i record in LQ ( 8H max with a 4H VHS ) or in HQ with 2 VHS 3H ? Because HQ is not 60 fps but 50 fps with old games PAL Huh?

.. Perharps i am wrong, sorry, i am a n00b with recording... Angry

An other ask : is Secret of Mana NTSC faster than Secret of Mana PAL Huh?

For to be faster, i do finnaly a few segments Tongue

And the time i have this bug for to kill the final boss, Begin-)After Pureland will be recorded.
I begin tomorrow ( it isn't possible today Angry

) and it will takes 3/4 days max, so it will be recorded before 07/15 Wink

6 is max or 7 for Mana Forteress if i will never have this bug, because i will wait to have luck with the final boss ( i will restart the game often so a end of segment just after Pure Land is interressant, and it's take too time to do Pure Land much time because i need sometimes luck against the dragons if not they kill the 3 chars with one hit) , like Spikey Tigger...

A last thing, i was wrong for my strat with MP after

, in fact, i didn't test with very low level, and in fact, with a very low level the sprite learn the magic slower, for example : level 1-5 is 8 MP ( i tought min was 9 ) and there are also a few level for 9-)10 MP. But that's not a matter, i kill

with 8 MP, 4* spell 2 MP and a few hit with sword Wink

Secret of Mana

Hello, it's me, it's about my speed run...

I finished my run on the first VHS, and i watched it.

Then i remenbered and re-saw Nate's FAQ about "TAPE STICKAGE" or something like this.

Now i have fear, please tell me if my run is correct if not i must all restart before to continue.... :
Radix, your opinion is perharps of primary importance.

There are 4 segments in my first VHS, total is 3H25.

There are 3 matters, 2 minors, and the third, i don't know sda can think about it.

*Matters 1 and 2

In the first segment, i don't know why, my video tape recorder is totaly new, like the support 4H, and at the begin, at 4minXXs and at 10minXXs, there is a sort of jump who takes about 0.2s in the 2 cases, it's not a vacuum, music continues, but it sucks, in fact screen and graphics are very deformed. It not re-happened, and it's absolutely not in "critical situation" ( it happens hoppefuly while "scenes" ) and it's at the begin of the game and if Nate is correct it's not really a matter because session of recording can be counted ( i record with VHS ), so i couldn't cheat.

*Matter 3

At the end of the second segment, who took about 1H16, i go to the inn ( of the village of the ice country ) but i believe to save ( i pushed y after sleep like the other times ), just after that i stop the record because it was the end of the second segment. Because i'm stupid, i realize after i was to safeguard, so i safeguard immediatly, then i realized it was better with record. But i didn't nothing after that : i stop the game, then i do a forward of about 30-60s, then i did the third segment, i start since the inn and continue the run.
There are always about 30-60s between each run recorded, it's for security, i have fear runs are recorded the ones on the others...

There is the matter : if there is a way to prove i could cheat, tell me it, all is lost, because i always saved on the same blocksave, but i have a good knowledge of this game and i didn't found this way

If you have any idea, don't worry, tell me, and if it's right, i will make a new run i will be not deprimed while 10 years It's just it will take more time and i prefer really to continue in the Tree Palace

My arguments :

The only interest to not save here was to save a segment ( it was not a "critical position" because i was in the inn and trust me, there are lots a "critical posistion" in a speed run of secret of mana, and i assumed all of them since the begin to the clones ), if i die after that i restart since the end of the first segment ( or an other savegames i saved after to not save at the inn ) or if i don't die i had recorded it. I restart from the inn, so obvioulsy the last save was in the inn.

I have the same EXP/GP/Magic Level as the end of the second segment and at the begin of the third record, and there aren't any thing to do between these twice segments to save time ( like dialogues ).

So the savegame not recorded after the end of the second segment recorded is the savegame at the begin of the third segment.

So i couldn't do anything which has not been recorded.
How i could do this savestate if i wanted to cheat ?
If i had continued the run ( if i wanted to cheat ), i didn't made this savestate and i couldn't loaded it at the begin of the third segment. Because if i wanted to cheat, this savestate would have appeared ( in the menu of the blocsaves ) the next time that i will have a safeguard, wenn i will save in the Golden Island in my run.

This thing kill the only way i could cheat : go to the inn of the village of the ice country, then stop the record, then do a safeguard, then restart the record and say i just had a matter with the video tape system and says it always the same segment ( #2 ).

That's not the same matter with the emulators, the matter with emulator is we can't prove if i cheat or not, because in this case i couldn't cheat !

edit 2 : lol i have too matters with VHS, and color quality is medium, i will retry with board of acquisiton. Believe me for me the moment, the next time i post, the run will be done/verified 100% Wink

EDIT 3 07/16/05 -) i edit because i said the next time i post the run is 100% recorded/verified, i took my save recorded on VHS and i finished the game with it, in 5H35, the Mana Beast took me more than 20 min !
Seriously, it's very hard Tongue

He's no really dangerous, it's a question of time Tongue

I had also a training about 10-15 min for to up Dryad of Purim/Popoie at level 4 and Luna of Purim at level 4, it's the fastest way to kill the final boss.
But finally i finished the game for the first time with a time of speed run ;), i found the right training Wink

There are 3 matters, 2 minors, and the third, i don't know sda can think about it. 
 
*Matters 1 and 2 
 
In the first segment, i don't know why, my video tape recorder is totaly new, like the support 4H, and at the begin, at 4minXXs and at 10minXXs, there is a sort of jump who takes about 0.2s in the 2 cases, it's not a vacuum, music continues, but it sucks, in fact screen and graphics are very deformed. It not re-happened, and it's absolutely not in "critical situation"  ( it happens hoppefuly while "scenes" ) and it's at the begin of the game and if Nate is correct it's not really a matter because session of recording can be counted ( i record with VHS ), so i couldn't cheat. 
 
*Matter 3 
 
At the end of the second segment, who took about 1H16, i go to the inn ( of the village of the ice country ) but i believe to save ( i pushed y after sleep like the other times ), just after that i stop the record because it was the end of the second segment. Because i'm stupid, i realize after i was to safeguard, so i safeguard immediatly, then i realized it was better with record. But i didn't nothing after that : i stop the game, then i do a forward of about 30-60s, then i did the third segment, i start since the inn and continue the run. 
There are always about 30-60s between each run recorded, it's for security, i have fear runs are recorded the ones on the others... 
 
There is the matter : if there is a way to prove i could cheat, tell me it, all is lost, because i always saved on the same blocksave, but i have a good knowledge of this game and i didn't found this way   
 
If you have any idea, don't worry, tell me, and if it's right, i will make a new run i will be not deprimed while 10 years  It's just it will take more time and i prefer really to continue in the Tree Palace   
 
My arguments : 
 
The only interest to not save here was to save a segment ( it was not a "critical position" because i was in the inn and trust me, there are lots a "critical posistion" in a speed run of secret of mana, and i assumed all of them since the begin to the clones ), if i die after that i restart since the end of the first segment ( or an other savegames i saved after to not save at the inn ) or if i don't die i had recorded it. I restart from the inn, so obvioulsy the last save was in the inn. 
 
I have the same EXP/GP/Magic Level as the end of the second segment and at the begin of the third record, and there aren't any thing to do between these twice segments to save time ( like dialogues ). 
 
So the savegame not recorded after the end of the second segment recorded is the savegame at the begin of the third segment. 
 
So i couldn't do anything which has not been recorded. 
How i could do this savestate if i wanted to cheat ?   
If i had continued the run ( if i wanted to cheat ), i didn't made this savestate and i couldn't loaded it at the begin of the third segment. Because if i wanted to cheat, this savestate would have appeared  ( in the menu of the blocsaves ) the next time that i will have a safeguard, wenn i will save in the Golden Island in my run.

This thing kill the only way i could cheat : go to the inn of the village of the ice country, then stop the record, then do a safeguard, then restart the record and say i just had a matter with the video tape system and says it always the same segment ( #2 ). 
 
That's not the same matter with the emulators, the matter with emulator is we can't prove if i cheat or not, because in this case i couldn't cheat !

edit 2 : lol i have too matters with VHS, and color quality is medium, i will retry with board of acquisiton. Believe me for me the moment, the next time i post, the run will be done/verified 100% ;)

EDIT 3  07/16/05 -) i edit because i said the next time i post the run is 100% recorded/verified,  i took my save recorded on VHS and i finished the game with it, in 5H35, the Mana Beast took me more than 20 min ! 
Seriously, it's very hard  :P He's no really dangerous, it's a question of time  :P
I had also a training about 10-15 min for to up Dryad of Purim/Popoie at level 4 and Luna of Purim at level 4, it's the fastest way to kill the final boss.
But finally i finished the game for the first time with a time of speed run  ;), i found the right training  ;)

Currently needing ideas on games to speedrun

I'd love to see the final boss, I haven't played this game in along time. I remember I sucked horribly at it XD so I never tried again. I might have to go ~~re-download~~ buy it now though.
