OK guys, Week 4's over. Week 5 is the incredibly awesome Rocket Knight Adventures, I want to see heaps of players this week!

just got done beating it to get back into things.

going to record a run on console.

Pretty interesting, and unforgiving. I think I have fast strats down for the first 3 bosses. Still need to work abit on the background/foreground snake but I guess that one will go better once I learn his patterns.

I love this game. A few hints:
The difficulty level really picks up in stages 3 and at the end of stage 5 (you'll know when. Trust me.)
If you're not familiar with the levels, don't rocket everywhere like mad. You'll quickly regret it in the later levels.
Get the 1-ups. You'll need them.

Looks like I'll be putting my run of Knuckles Chaotix on hold for the week. I'm playing this weeks game on my Genesis.

Time to get the ball rolling.

Stupid train. BTW point-blanking is the best way to kill everything but man that train will ruin your shit if your timing is only -slightly- out.
welcome to the machine
VorpalEdge - Stage 5 - ??:??

I suck too much to bother timing, just put me in last place for the level.

That's the first time I've ever had a game over due to the train...

big time spent during level 5, the boss is awfull, my time for the level is 36:18 .... (couldnt beat the boss but there is a 1up, luckily i could break the loop Wink and i made a lot of lifes with bonus points)

btw how do you time the game? you stop the timer when you kill the boss or when you go to the end of level screen or what? Also for the final boss, do i stop the timer when i land the final blow or when the monster starts his death animation? (not that it matter for a >1h "speedrun" Wink )

Got this last night. I died so often on that bit of level 4 on top of the plane that it's not funny. (Rocket too frequently, fly straight off the edge of the map...)

zoonel: SDA timing should prevail here, start timing when you gain control (I've actually been timing from when I press C to start Stage 1, it's only a second or two either way and it's much easier to track for me) and stop timing when the screen fades out after the re-entry stage. If you don't complete the game, the time you give is the time that you started the level you died on.

Scoreboard time!

1st end boss can be beaten without it dropping mines.

idk if it's number of hits by that point or what but, as you know, you can get 2 hits in every time it drops it's head.  1 hit when it comes from the sides.  anyway, after it comes from the right side, I got in 3 hits when it comes in from the ceiling (middle) and it didn't bother dropping mines.  instead it came from the ceiling (right) again.

[20:01] <SJ> so it's 11 hits before it drops mines
[20:03] <Diluted> Gah, I get 10 everytime
[20:03] <SJ> it's easy
[20:03] <SJ> you know when it drops peeks his head in before coming from the sides?
[20:04] <SJ> you can charge up a rocket and hit it then
[20:04] * BDA has joined #sda
[20:04] <Diluted> Aaah
[20:04] <SJ> but if you miss, you can try to hit it 3 times when he sticks his head in through the middle before dropping mines

I have to forget that I've beaten this game on an easier setting. I keep taking hits that I can't afford to on Normal.

No deaths until stage 5, but quite a few after that. Still, I managed to complete the game with something like 6 lives in hand, so I'm not too disappointed. It might be time for me to start skipping some of the more out of the way lives in the search for a better time Shocked

Or maybe I should just stop dying in stage 6.

holydiver42: The level that you specify is not the level you beat, but the level you got to. If you didn't beat level 1, then you clearly don't have a time for it. Tongue

Updating the scoreboard.

ok, I'm going to put down my boss strats and stuff I found out today....

remember, when enemies are flashing, you can usually stay point black on them for faster kills.

Stage 1:

Midboss (Tank/Bridge):  you should be able to take it out before it even shoots fire, but even if he starts to, that doesn't mean you're slow.  he can go back and forth for some time before even deciding to fire off bullets.  he takes 6 hits to kill, so don't go wasted slashes, he won't take damage until he's done flashing.

Midbsss (Tank/Water):  he's HP based so keep up the slashes.  instead of jumping all over the place, get him to get to about your level and start slashing as much as possible and follow him until dead.

Midboss (Water Dragon):  when it's coming, get below the water and stay at the far left of the screen.  keep mashing attack and you can hit it as it comes down on you.  now just stay on it's head while it's flashing and you can take it out pretty damn fast.  Also if you're wondering why sometimes you leave the screen at different times, it's because you have to wait until the dragon head is off screen.  fastest way is if you can get it to leave from the left side instead of at the bottom.

End Boss:  takes 15 hits total.

Stage 2:

Midboss (Racoon) (yes it's a racoon, at least that's what the instruction manual names it):  I'm not sure, but you can get in either 2-3 hits per jump.  I suggest you hold down jump and slash it's nose as many times as you can.  a good time is it dies while its right arm spins around on it's own.

Midboss (Water Snake): you should be able to kill it before it decides to jump to the foreground.  you can get it to jump into the foreground early by just jumping on the platform.

End Boss (Train):  Mike89 informed me it's HP based, so just keep on it slashing.  you can point blank this thing at all points until it (not the 1st form at least because of bullets).  for the first part, get in close before it even appears and get off 11 slashes before it fires.  then do 6 slashes point blank in between shots.  repeat until it blows up.

Stage 3:

Midboss (Crab Walker):  you can start attacking it pretty early with rocket attacks right after it's down blowing up the ground.  not too many, because you'll want to either go to the left or right claw and take it out.  once that's done, get near it's head to the side of it and put some well placed slashes into it.  about to where it's eye is, but slightly below.  also watch for the other claw.

End Boss (Fish):  can be done within 2 turns.  just learn when the pig will jump out of it's mouth and keep hitting it with slashes.    Rane said it can be done within one turn by point blanking it and good timing of your jumps.

Stage 4:

Midboss (Flamethrower):  when it comes in from the left side of the screen, get over there to slash at it before it settles at the bottom.  here's the hard part.  instead of waiting for the bombs to show up, charge up your rocket, drop close to it, aim and fire off upward left/right (depending on your position).  it has to be early enough so you can land back on the rail.

End Boss (Pig Robo):  you can kill it in 1 turn.  it takes 11 hits total but it's not easy and it's so easy.  when it starts to fire off its large blasts, slash at it twice when standing near his feet.  it should be dead before it even does its spread shot.

Stage 5

Midboss (lolgradius/walker): slash at it when it lands and goes backwards towards you with its rocket facing you.  do not get hit...not yet at least so keep good distance.  now wait like 2 sec, and then get in behind it (you will get hit, takes 3 hearts) and slash like crazy and even following it off screen.  when it comes back, try to get enough distance so you can slash at it, but have enough room to get in between the lasers.  keep it up until it blows up.

Midboss (lolgradius/flying):  point blank it when it stops in the center and keep at it.  if you have enough health, stay on it even if you get hit.  if you can risk it, move out of the way (bottom left) and come back and finish it off.

End Boss (Rock em Sock em):  just bait his attack and counter...that's all.

Stage 6

Midboss (Grandpa Pig):  point blank him all over the place.  when he stops and is about to fire lasers, get to about his chest area and when he starts to fire, you won't be hit.  keep moving down slightly to match him until he dies.

Midboss (Axel):  after he fires his laser, he'll leave and come back in the upper right.  point blank him and follow me until he dies.  finish off the pigs too.

EndBoss (Pig Destroyer):  I suggest taking out the closest turret to its head and the one underneath too. when it opens its hatch, point blank that.  when it comes back, get under his chin and point blank it.  now, make sure before he reveals his last core, that you can get underneath him.  when it shows up, point blank it even before it separates its head from the ship and keep on it.  do not let it get to the bottom of the screen to where you can't even hit it.

Stage 7

Midboss (Devilius/Sword):  only charges can damage it.

Midboss (Devilius/Robo):  again, only charges.  it might be HP based though, so charge at an angle to where you'll spin into him afterwards.

Boss: Axel (ground) when you gain control, get close to him and start slashing at him right before he starts himself.  he'll pop up in the air.  as he's doing that, you turn around (without moving if you can) and start slashing.  you may get another hit off or not.  Now, you will pop backwards to the left of the screen and he'll follow.  now both of you should be in the left corner, but you need to start slashing immediately while moving up out of the corner slightly.  this way, you aren't facing him and he stays in the corner.  with this, you can get in 2-3 hits before taking damage.  each hit you take is 1 1/2 hearts, but you should have full health by this point (there's a banana after killing Devilius).  Now, don't drain yourself too far unless you're confident you can make it to the gravity room before the computer without taking damage.

Axel (Air), I've yet to take him out in 1 turn, but if you say it's possible.  you don't have to take damage on this though.  timing is all you need.  basically from which direction he's coming from (also he is locking on to you when he's circling clockwise) behind, start slashing when close to your feet.  I usually get him within 2 turns.  a safe way is to do the stationary charge (spinning).

Axel (Hyper), he likes to come in from the opposite of where you're hanging from so, anticipate this and charge him and then jump and slash at him before he takes off again.  there is a way to get him closer to you, but I haven't tested it out yet.

I want off the ride....
i compiled a set of save states of trouble spots... this should be all of them... if i'm missing one let me know or just place it for others to use. Almost all are at 8hp or so (mining tank is an exception with 7 hearts)
destroy them with lazers
just beat it 51:45

considering that was my first time through level 7 not to bad. quite a few mistakes but i now know the layout of all the levels.

on the pig circle boss thing you fight near the end. it seems that the boxing glove can be manipulated based on where you stand. that or its just an easy fight.

I must have misread the rules somehow.  I thought it said to put down the level you beat.  My mistake.  In which case...
