Verification Files

http://v.speeddemosarchive.com/QuestForGlory-20150614/

Please refer to the Verification Guidelines before posting. Verifications are due by July 7, 2015.

Please post your opinions about the run and be certain to conclude your post with a verdict (Accept/Reject). This is not a contest where the majority wins - I will judge each verification on its content. Please keep your verification brief unless you have a good reason otherwise.

After 2 weeks I will read all of the verifications and move this thread to the main verification board and post my verdict.
What's that gemma?
I'd like some input from the runner regarding what has changed in the sound settings, as they are clearly different from what they were in the previous runs.

The only difference is the use of Roland MT-32 sound emulation, which was discussed during the verification of the "major-sequence breaks" run.  There have been no changes to the setting from the that run.  It does seem a bit quiet to me as well, but when you reach the castle, the work scene, the fairy's circle and the final parts of the run (the brigand's fort) you can hear the background music perfectly fine.  The forest never has music.

For a little extra clarification: I was unaware of the possibility of Roland MT32 sound when I originally did my first series of runs for QFG1VGA; the Magic-User and Fighter were submitted back in late January, and an updated Thief was late Feb, and were only recently approved (Fighter was rejected, hence this run).  I became aware of the possibility for Roland MT32 sound shortly after, which is clearly superior to Soundblaster, and switched my settings to use them.

The discussion of using Roland sound emulation was approved here already on this run (same game/different category): https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/quest_for_glory_so_you_want_to_be_a_hero_available_for_verification_2015.6.9.html

Any other clarification I can offer?
Always move forward, never sleep.
A/V: Good
Cheating: None

The route looked optimized to get the ingredients for the dispel potion, and the brigand HQ was great.  Not really much else to say, it was executed well with only 2 or 3 screen transition hiccups, but that's going to happen with a game like this.

All in all, an easy accept from me.
So I'm very disappointed the run doesn't finish with a negative score. Clearly more skips are in demand.

accept though

LOLOL

Give me time; I'll see what I can do.

Huh, I had no idea there was a resubmission of the large skips run, or I'd have brought up the sound issue there.  I think it would be more accurate that the change in game settings went mostly unnoticed rather than that it was approved.

I did some testing, and it appears that the downsampling time that the GOG game installation settings incur is minimal with DosBox at 10k cycles (as is the case with GOG's DosBox settings).  So I guess it's fine, though I'm not sure it's necessarily consistent with SDA's usual policies.

Anyway, the run is good.  There are a few seconds that could be saved by moving the cursor more accurately / sooner, particularly when accessing the inventory, but otherwise execution is on point.  RNG went nearly perfectly as well.  The route incorporates the improvements I requested from the previous submission.

Accept is my vote.

Thanks, Crow!  I was wondering about your thoughts since the opening parts of the thread.  Actually, the "resubmission" was instigated by ktwo, who noticed that I had a faster run (maybe he checked my Youtube or speedrun.com?  I'm curious now myself.) and asked if I wanted to upload the faster run and restart the verification under the same thread you had voted accept on previously (https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/quest_for_glory_so_you_want_to_be_a_hero_available_for_verification_2015.6.9.html).

i actually brought up the sound settings change in that thread with some prominence when the upload was complete, and asked that that would be included in discussion of verification to make sure we had all the bases covered.  It couldn't have been unnoticed because I brought it up directly in that thread, but what probably happened was that they (and I) were unaware of the technical differences resulting in speed from downsampling.  You probably saw notifications on a verification thread you had already cast your vote on and ignored them.  Cheesy  I think it snuck past you.

What I would say is that the creators' and Sierra's intent was Roland sound, which is why i changed to Roland, and leads viewers of the run to a more "genuine" experience of what the creators wanted from their game while still being a speedrun.  I've read your explanation from our previous thread about Roland MT32 sound, but I am far from a sound-guy and some of it is still hazy in my mind.  I was always a hardware/systems guy, and as a minister I like analogy.  The GOG release includes the "install" program that originally came with those games; would switching to Roland be similar to lowering graphic settings on modern games to alter frame-rate and speed?
Decision posted.

Thanks to everyone with their help in the decision and verification process.  I'm thrilled to see the QFG games starting to appear on the homepage of SDA as well!  Thanks to everyone who helped with this routing and made it possible.
